They were​n't even sublimina; the affirmations were blatant affirmatins of him being a cold and ruthless destroyer, that he would be a merciless animal in the ring. @xbeautyispain the issue is that Cus never wanted Mike to turn that off, and never thought about shutting it off outside the ring.
Like Tyson said, Cus was so focused solely on the heavyweight championship. However, in his obsession to make Mike a champion, he underestimated the negative drawbacks of his coaching style and Mike's tortured past.

Mike Tyson is an excellent human being, and a genuinely caring person. That being said, in his prime he was young and naive, letting him be taken advantage of by bad people.

Once Cus was gone, Mike's worse tendencies began to get the better of him and then he let the wrong people into his circle. He needed strong positive influences around him to keep him grounded and humble. Mike got the opposite.

Talent, its out there, its up to the person to do with it what they will. But that belief, the belief to do what others say you can't.
