  • Adjusting the rangefinder horizontal alignment is relatively simple for Leica M-mount 35mm camera bodies. Since getting my used Leica M-P 240, I noticed over time I was sometimes missing the focus, particularly when shooting wide open, f:1.4 - f:2.0 on my 50mm and 90mm Leica lenses.
    In this video, I demonstrate the process to fix the mis-aligned rangefinder. All that is needed is a 2mm Allen key (hexagonal wrench), a clean work area and a steady hand. Older Leica's have a slotted bolt head, so a flat head screw driver is needed.
    There are two possible adjustments, one horizontal and one vertical. I only demonstrate the horizontal adjustment in this video.
    Hope this helps.

      What do you mean by “back-focused”? This video is about RF horizontal alignment, which has nothing to do with how the lens actually focuses.

    Life saver.!....Great video. Gave me confidence to do my own, Just corrected my new M10 (a demo one from a shop, out of alignment at infinity) and my MP240..Agree with everything you said about focus just slightly off at all distances. Thought it was me, or my eyes. Both RF were stopping shot at infinity. As a guide for everyone, (with camera upside down so you can see) - anti-clockwise extends the throw of the RF patch when it has been stopping short, and clockwise brings the patch back when it goes too far. Took me 15 minutes to do both cameras after being told by many that I needed to send them to Victoria to be done there!

    I have only ever had to slightly tweak the horizontal after it either got bumped or drifted out of alignment over many years. However, I just returned from a trip to Portugal and while I was there, my M10-P somehow worked its way out of one of the split rings on my A&A strap and it took a tumble down onto the beautiful Portuguese limestone pavement. Fortunately it fell flat on the bottom plate. I had the ZM 50/1.5 mounted and it only suffered a small scratch to the black paint on the bottom of the hood. When I checked the patch at infinity, sure enough, it was out. This time it was both the horizontal and the vertical. Fast forward a few weeks and I finally had some time to address it. Both adjustments on the M10-P are 2mm hex. I removed the vanity screw with a plastic flathead from my collection of antistatic tools. It's not on very tight. I checked focus with all my main lenses both Leica and Zeiss, and it didn't take much tweaking to get them to all agree at 1m, 10m and infinity. Very happy.

    Man, I am so grateful for this video. Thank you so much! I've had the same issue with my M262 and a Summicron 50 and a Tele-Elmarit 90. My Summicron 35mm, no focus issues, but the other two would always back focus just a bit. I just happened to stumble upon your video and am so glad I did. I used the method you demonstrated and in less than a minute, and a slight clockwise turn, the focusing issue was gone. Now all three lenses, wide open, focus perfect and fast. I started to wonder if it was my eyes, maybe I was just too old to use rangefinder focusing, or I needed to just live with slightly out of focus photos; or try and just focus on the subject, then pull the focus slightly closer.... all options, but kind of took the fun out of things.
    I had always thought the only way to adjust the rangefinder was behind the red dot. Your method only took a few seconds! Okay, I'm rambling here... just so happy, man. Thank you, again!!!

    Well I’m glad I found your easy to follow video. My M10 that I’ve had for 1 and a half years just recently went out of alignment. It’s slightly back focusing, while I don’t have the best eyes despite my young age I was able to notice it today. Took several pictures on a tripod just to make sure and sure enough I was correct it was indeed back focusing so I’ll order a small 2mm allen wrench tool to get it back to calibration. I’m just surprised my bad eyes were able to notice it when using my voigtlander 35mm f/1.5.

    Thanks for the video. I just completed a vertical adjustment on my M10 last week and is a similar procedure to what you describe here - Vertical adjustment being behind the red dot (hex adjustment). The hardest part for me was removing the red dot - the actual adjustment took all of 5 minutes. In my case the vertical had drifted slightly lower than the horizontal image causing eye strain to find quick focus on detailed subjects. What an easy DIY job.

    • @Super.Quasar
      @Super.Quasar Před 4 lety +2

      Griniflix - Adventure8 No, sorry. I'll describe it though here.
      .
      Inside the lens opening on the M3 body there's a small curved bar. It's towards the top of the camera. This curved bar controls the distance setting. It needs to be opened up slightly, not flattened. Ha.
      I used two pairs of slim-nosed pliers. One pair to hold the bar near the pivot point, so that it doesn't move. The second pair to lever the curved bar open. Make three or four attempts to bend it, don't do it in one go and after each attempt try the lens to see if you've actually achieved anything. It's likely that you'll be too frightened on your first attempt to actually do anything. If you overdo it, you can bend it back.
      .
      The tricky bit is getting two pliers in there as the working area is small. I used tissue to avoid marking the bar.
      .
      There's great satisfaction in completing this job and converting an M3 to 0.7.

      @Adventure8  Před 4 lety +2

      I did have a look at my Leica M4 film camera to see how the horizontal adjustment is made. The mechanism appears to be similar, however, instead of a 2mm hexagonal (Allen Key) bolt, there is a flat head screw head to adjust. This would need a screw driver at a right angle, ie special tool. I’ll make another video once I make the tool needed. Cheers

    • @jlwilliams
      @jlwilliams Před 4 lety +2

      Griniflix - Adventure8 I don't remember if this is true for the M4, but some film M models have a funny-looking access plug in the baseplate which, when removed, lets you reach up from below with a normal screwdriver. Two things to remember: make sure the screwdriver blade fits the adjusting screw exactly, and do NOT push up on the coupling arm at all while you're trying to turn the screw, because if you bend the coupling mechanism you are toasted! I used to have a little wooden wedge that I would slip in above the arm to absorb any upward force that I might have to apply to get the screw to turn. Oh, yes, a third thing to remember: one false move that results in a scratch and you've just knocked $500 off the value of your camera!

    this was sooooo helpful for me thank you! I thought I would have to have my 90 CLA'd to fix this so this is saving me some money. My only question is if there would be any adjustments still needed to be made on a lens as well? Or do all the adjustments happen on the camera side?

    • @Adventure8
      @Adventure8  Před rokem +1

      Glad the video helped to adjust your Leica M. Once you know your camera is set correctly, you can very quickly find the peculiarities of each lens. For example, position of infinity (not always at the end of focus rotation), focus shift when changing f-stop and if there is a fault in the lens. Most lenses do not have any adjustment. Exceptions are some of the Chinese M-mount lenses where the base mount can be adjusted (rotated). So if a lens does not focus correctly, chances are the lens is damaged and CLA might be justified (subject to budget of course).

      I found the easiest way to determine if you need to adjust the rangefinder, is to mount a 50mm or 90mm lens, set the lens on infinity and look to see if the rangefinder split image line up perfectly. If at infinity, the split image is not aligned, then adjustment might correct it. Hope that helps.

I adjusted the rangefinder lever (as in the video) and now it's perfect at close distances but out at mid distances. Not exactly sure why this would be. I'm guessing I need to find the focus sweet spot that gives the best possible results for both near and far?

      Hi, the horizontal screw adjustment is on a off-centred cam. The screw is a friction fit. It is not locked in position. That means, just through normal use, there is a probability the screw/cam position will change over time. No doubt, Leica could confirm this. That is my observation.

So I set up the rangefinder horizontal adjustment to suit the 50mm Summilux and/or the 90mm f2.0 APO. Wider lenses like 21mm, are less critical with focus. I would also use a Leica lens rather than other manufacturers lenses to set up the Horizontal Adjustment. • @Adventure8
      @Adventure8  Před 2 lety +1

      Unfortunately I think your problem is more than just adjustment. Here is a website I found on the rangefinder internals. There are at least 4 prisms plus glass elements. I suspect one of the prisms has moved, hence why you see black. You may need to get some technical help from a local expert. Good luck.
      www.cameraworks-uk.com/post/leica-rangefinder-rebuild-and-why-you-might-need-one

    • @Adventure8
      @Adventure8  Před 2 lety +1

      Here is an extract from the website I suggested.The black-out happens because the beamsplitter prism that lies behind the eyepiece has
      split into two parts. While it is cemented together with balsam of a similar refractive index
      as the glass, you are essentially looking through a glass cube. After a knock, the balsam
      can fail. Because the two halves are triangular, light can no longer get through due to total
      internal reflection. The reason you can still see the secondary image and the framelines is
      because they are reflected from the 45 degree face of the prism half, directly behind the
      eyepiece.

    • @Adventure8
      @Adventure8  Před 4 lety

      Best way to work out the cause of the focusing problem, ie. is it the rangefinder or something else (lens, mount etc) is to put on a couple of lens on to your M4 to see if the “out of focus” error is similar across lenses. If it’s consistent across lens, then chances are the rangefinder requires adjustment. What lens are you using and what other lenses do you have to try with the M4. Are you using any lens adapters, eg screw to m-mount?

    • @jlwilliams
      @jlwilliams Před 4 lety +4

      Usually, unless your lens has been damaged, the infinity stop will be in the correct place for infinity focus. Check it against something that is really far away, such as a broadcast tower that is at least 1 km distant, or even the moon if you live in the country where there aren't any handy towers. Just set the lens to its infinity stop and see if your distant object lines up correctly with the rangefinder. Technicians traditionally set the rangefinder's infinity adjustment first (as shown in this video) because if that is off, everything else will be off too. On an undamaged camera, adjusting the infinity position usually will put the closer distances right (which is one reason Leica made it easy to adjust the infinity position without taking the camera apart.) If the rangefinder is correct for infinity but incorrect for closer distances, it probably means your camera was dropped or otherwise damaged. There's a near-distance adjustment for the rangefinder as well, but this is best left to a technician because it can't be reached without removing the top cover of the camera.
      By the way, you can't trust the engraved distance scale as a reference, because it is calculated for an “average” lens and not marked for your specific lens (the way some super-expensive cine lenses are.) If you're not sure your lens has its infinity stop at true infinity - either because it might have been dropped, or some previous owner might have tinkered with it, or because it's a Soviet lens that was calibrated differently for a Soviet camera - all you can do is make a test on film. The traditional way to do this is to take a sheet of newspaper, and mark a bold vertical line down the middle of it (perpendicular to the type) with a marker so you'll have something that's easy to line up with the rangefinder. Tape the sheet of newspaper on a door or wall with the marker line running vertically, then set up your camera at a 45-degree angle to it at a distance of about 2 meters or a bit less. Set your lens to full aperture or close to it (stopping down a bit gives you a sharper image and makes it easier to evaluate your test.) Use the rangefinder to focus on the marker line and take a picture; then shoot more tests as you adjust your lens in tiny increments closer and farther (making pencil lines on the barrel will help you keep track.) Then develop your test film and examine the results with a magnifier. If the sharpest line of type is the one under the line you drew with the marker, you know your lens is set correctly; if one of the other lines of type is sharper, you know which way the lens is off and by about how much.
      (Some people try to save shooting a roll of test film by checking this setting with a piece of ground glass, or even frosted sticky tape, on the camera's film guide rails. I'll do this sometimes for a quick evaluation, but I don't think it's accurate enough for a true test... I'm never sure my focusing surface is in exactly the same position a piece of film would be.)
      Or you can say to heck with the whole thing and get a nice mirrorless camera, which eliminates all these worries!
