There was a mysterious band who sent a demo tape to the Bell in Bath once, featuring this song. There were some other, fruitier songs, too, and we very much wanted to book them. The problem was that there wasn't an address (still a thing back then) or phone number.
Early JA music had many influences, including R&B that could be heard late at night from Miamia and New Orleans. Direct predecessor to ska is mento which has calypso elements.
I first heard this in Alan Arkin's 1969 short film "People Soup," when his son Matthew sang it while biking home at the beginning. I was struck by how much it sounded like "Over the Rainbow" and Cat Stevens' "Moonshadow." It's truly one of Bob Marley's best; too bad it didn't become one of his major hits. Thanks for posting it. A bunch of us tourists sang this much better - especially after a couple of Daiquiris.
It's nice, but both the Blues Busters and Prince Buster versions sound better to me. Just a personal opinion, of course.
