  • My converter was starting slow so I added another starting capacitor and go over the components I use to build it.

I believe you need a separate contactor for the capacitor to go through. During start, the surge amps from the caps to the motor will cause the potential relay to fail. Let the potential relay control your capacitor contactor and the high current load will then be on the contactor.

I’d be happy with that start. Mine hums and grunts until the motor spools up. Mine stalls and hums sometimes on startup and I have to shut it off. I’ve even rocked it at times to get it to start. I need to learn about how they work to see if the caps are old or what.

Thank you for explaining all this out. I just acquired a 20hp baldor I’m gonna use to make a setup similar to this.

Do me a favor please and remove the chuck key from your lathe chuck when not in use. I have seen the aftermath and it isn't pretty. Luckily it was only 3/4-inch plywood that got harmed. It only takes a moment of forgetfulness to have a really bad day. Other than that, I really like your video.

Nicely explained I’m just about to convert a static to rotary converter, i was tying to figure out if i just connected the input and output of the idler motor together your diagram helped cheers.

Great video. Now remove that chuck wrench from the chuck on that nice lathe and never store it there again. Only put it in the socket when you plan to use it. I've seen people run out of the machine shop for doing that same thing. And it's the first rule they teach in machineshop classes. That and nothing on the ways except oil.

Mr Pete has just uploaded a RPC video - and his has a similar starting rate !

Think you need more capacitors to balance the voltage and power.

I was just thinking, is that not the potential relay that stays in, or keeps the caps in the circuit too long? I have seen that somebody uses a adjustable relay and tweets it till it works beter.

Thanks man, its very helpful. I got One questions, how you connect to the machine . Is it work when i’m directly wire phase converter output to the machine main box ? or need wire straight to the idle motor like VFD .
