Hi Rachel, Well, your garden is just a cloud of loveliness, colour, and diversity. You must be so happy and it's only the beginning. Those wasps 😮. I've never seen such creatures before. Our wasps are yellow and black, and they sting anything that moves, but they have their role to play in the garden. I wonder if your armadillo also ate those army worms? I envy your warm temperatures and sunshine. Last week it was quite warm around 14⁰c but gales and rain. This week, will be dry and sunny but cold with 0⁰c at night. That's spring!!! I cut the grass but had to leave some since there are lots of poppies growing, and I like to encourage some wild flowers. Oh, your dahlias look so healthy, and you'll get more than just 3 blooms, I think. Can't wait to see them. I haven't woken mine up yet, only the ones I want cuttings from, but I'll get them all out and into soil as soon as this cold spell has passed. I planted peas, and they've germinated, so we'll see how that goes . Yes, it is great to share our garden news. Many thanks for another beautiful video. Have a great week 😀

Thank you, Kim!!! Aren’t wasps weird?!? I didn’t realize how beneficial they could be! But I should have known that they serve a purpose! Everything exists to keep a healthy balance, except for armadillos. LOL! But that is the horror of having invasive species since there is nothing around to balance out their numbers! - Oh, see! You can grow poppies!!! There’s no need to envy my warm weather since it keeps me from growing poppies! Haha! - Thank you for the insight into the dahlias! I hope they will do well!!! I know yours will grow fabulously!!!

    Is it Sunday ALREADY???!
    It doesn't FEEL like Sunday...
My gosh, how time has been flying this week!!
And as usual, your garden is once again a SUNDAY FEAST!
It's just so colorful & blooming so nicely!!
I really do love walking thru it with you!
Thank You so much for bringing me along!!

Awwww, thank you, GGO!!! I know that you have been having fun piling generous helpings of your glorious bounty of mulch all over your garden! I hope that you grow an actual forest of mushrooms!!!

    • @gardengatesopen
      @gardengatesopen Před rokem +1

@Gulf Coast Butterfly Gardening Funny you should mention the shrooms!
This cold front that decided to pop in has given birth to 10 NEW LIONS MANE MUSHROOMS!!
      TEN!!
Before that happened, I thought they were gunna be done until next Fall.
      BUT NOOOO!!! hehehehehe!!!
      I'VE GOT 10 MORE!!!
And yes, they're in a woodchip mulch garden.
      Which I guess,
is what that garden is now...
      Seems kinda weird.
      Wait, no -
      Seems VERY WEIRD!!!
      You've got flowers blooming.
      I'm growing soil & mushrooms.
Anyway, weird or not, the Lions Mane slurry I've been adding to my coffee every morning is DEFINITELY helping with my memory!!
So, Mother Nature is keeping me healthy by blowing in a late cold front!
      OHHH!!!
AND IT'S BEEN RAINING FOR THREE DAYS!!! WHOOO HOOOOOO!!!!
I'm SO happy about THAT too!!
We've only gotten a total of about 3 inches. Which, when I say that out loud, doesn't seem like much...
And in the Grand Scheme of things isn't NEARLY ENOUGH to fill up the lakes...
BUT OH MY GOSH IT'S PRETTY GREAT WHILE IT'S HAPPENING!!!
I took that opportunity to scratch in some fertilizer for my Daffodils since they've quit blooming now.
And as I've mentioned before, there's a lot of them that never did bloom, yet they've got good healthy leaves.
I think I might have to face reality that I got some "tainted soil" last year...
The only daffs that didn't bloom is where that new soil is.
And there's zero weeds growing there too. (that's kind of a big clue!)
      So yeah, that's a bummer.
I guess I'll try to grow some sunflowers in those areas to hopefully draw up the chemicals in the soil...
      Anyway - Rain AND MUSHROOMS!!
      I'm a happy camper!!

LOL! Even the word red makes me angry! I have no idea why! But if I had to guess, I think it would be because red is an attention hog. It’s the thing that draws my eye to it most unwillingly. And then yellow is the second color that does that. They are the naughty children of the color world! Haha! - Oh! I’m so glad that you are enjoying different shades of green!!! I love splotches of color! @Gulf Coast Butterfly Gardening LOL!!! I so very much enjoyed your comments. Yes, you have described the heart soul. When I was a small child, my grandmother asked why I was drawing a house plan with the red and yellow crayons (makes orange). Because I wanted my house to be lively and bright. Red (I am sorry I angered you. Haha) because it is love. Yellow because it is sunshine. A house filled with love and sunshine is orange. Yes, my home is filled with different hues of red, not bright and flashy but muted with beige, black, and white. A friend once described my home as truly my personality, plain, simple, yet elegant with an underlying sense of energy. New comers or friends I haven't met yet, when learning where I live, have exclaimed you are the one with the beautiful flowers. I live a ways off the road. The first thing you see when you drive up my drive is not my house but my gardens in the front. Yes, my white lilies are blooming. It's still cold here. Things are not blooming as fast as your garden, which I love to watch, grow, and bloom. It matches your sweet and Southern voice. And I love your collection of hats. I try to paint, but I would rather play in the dirt in my Sanctuary, aka Hoopi/hoop house/greenhouse. I am looking forward to Sunday to see what you have done this week. My favorite color is green!

    Oh!
    This was SO Cool!!
    Check this out -
I was walking down my street a couple days ago, and I saw a wildflower I'd never seen before!!
(I thought I had seen them all by now!)
But that's what I get for thinking so much!
I walked into a scrubby piece of land bcuz I was following a patch of Bluebonnets. These Bluebonnets were like a lush carpet begging me to follow their trail. So I did!
They swept around this corner of brush, and when I turned the corner, there was this new flower I'd never seen before!
There was this whole colony of them!
They were dotting the carpet of Bluebonnets looking just like tiny marshmallows floating in a cup of hot chocolate!
The flower stands tall at about 14 inches, and the breeze was blowing so gently,
it kinda felt like they were waving hello to me!😊
    The whole scene was surreal!!
    I looked the plant up,
    and the common name is
    Texas Green Lily, or
    Texas Feathershank.
If you want to look it up,
    the latin name is:
    Schoenocaulon tetanus
Anyway, the leaves are a small, but a tidy clump of blue/green grass.
    And the flower is outstanding!
    It's one long wavy stem,
    standing above the leaves,
and it's kind of shaped like a feather,
if a feather was cone shaped.
Which is not a great description!
But the "cone" part is made up of hundreds of tiny inflorescences, which are white with peach & yellow tips!
I mean, it's just pretty fabulous!!
If you look it up, the pictures are much better than my description.
    When I saw it,
    I was like, "Hey!!"
    And -
"Where have YOU been hiding all my life!?!"
    Naturally,
    the flower answered,
all nonchalant & cool as a cucumber,
    (as most flowers do)
"I've been right here all along, it's YOU who are late."
    Pffffthhh 👅💦 !!
So yeah, there's a really big patch of them that's kinda tucked away in a little alcove on some unmanaged land.
There they are, not 300 feet from my house, and we've been living practically side by side all these years!
And I never even knew about them!!
I'm thinking I can go snag some of their seeds pretty soon too, since they're flowering right now!
    I did some reading,
    and apparently,
they can come live in my domesticated yard and they can pretend to be domesticated!
So I'll give it a try.
After they flower, they'll bring some nice texture to the landscape looking just like a little blue/green Carex grass.
And then, since they bloom at the same time as Bluebonnets, the 2 of them will be making a very nice show together!
Just as they are right now!
I'm still a bit stunned that I never had seen it before, but overall, it's very exciting!
    That's my story for today!
I hope you have a good week!
    Ciao Doll ! ❤

I'm going to try for those seeds!
I don't know how long it takes to go from flower to seed.
Heck, I don't even know what the seed head looks like!!
It's only been about 10 days, and it already feels like I've been waiting FOREVER!!!
The research says it is a super slooooow growing plant.
      So yeah...
      There's that.
Maybe the seed making is slow too?
      Pffffthhh!!

    • @gulfcoastbutterflygardening
      @gulfcoastbutterflygardening  Před rokem +1

Oh! That explains why it isn't super well known and widely grown!

    • @gardengatesopen
      @gardengatesopen Před rokem

@Gulf Coast Butterfly Gardening Yeah, I guess.
I went to look at it yesterday, and even tho the flowers are still there, I'm not seeing any seed formation - yet.
I found out another thing about it,
it's endemic to a very small area.
It only grows between here and Houston, and I think that's only in the Hill Country spaces.
So it's extremely picky about where it grows!
The more I think about it,
I may not have a place in my yard that has enough sun for it to be happy...
My yard is mostly shade, except this one spot which gets about 8 hours of sun.
      So 🤷🏼‍♀️
      We'll just have to see!!

I like to watch Garden Answer utubes out of Eastern Oregon. However, she seems to get all the product, any of us could possibly salivate over, from Gardener's Supply and others who apparently sponsor her utubes. While watching it makes me dream of greater things I know it's mostly out of my reach financially. Your videos, Rachel, are more down to earth and real for me and something I can relate to. I look forward to each episode to see what is Rachel gonna try or do next!?
Growing everything in containers is initially easy and fun but eventually the day comes when you have to pull the plant out and refresh. I'm doing that now and it's not a fun job for me. Seeing that you need all those current planted pots for something else is no easy chore so my best to you on that!
I'm curious, do you refresh the soil mixture that comes out of pots and then reuse it? I've started doing that on the advice of an organic gardener. His suggestion was to refresh the used potting soil with compost, a good organic granular fertilizer and some azomite. I'll see how things turn out.
So happy gardening and happy Easter!

Oh, Wendy! I know what you mean! I feel the same way when I read English Gardens magazine. I like seeing the estate gardens and am also inspired by them, but I adore seeing small gardens and learning about plants that are available to me and that will want to live where I live! They give me hope!!! LOL!
Ugh! You are right! There’s nothing that I like more than to plant up a new container and decide what goodies will go in it, and there nothing that I like less than having to figure out what to do with an overgrown container with contents that either needs to be refreshed or planted out in the garden. I really hate digging holes!
It really depends on how big the container is when it comes to refreshing the soil for me. If it’s a huge one, I dump it all out and throw all of the soil with matted roots in the compost, then I take what’s salvageable and put that in the bottom half of the container with new soil on the top half. But with small containers, I use all new. I throw everything in the compost pile, so I don’t feel like I have ever wasting anything. But…I did throw away the entire contents of several pots the other day when I found ants in them and I didn’t want to deal with them. Haha!
Oh! I have some azomite! I need to get that out and use it! Thanks for reminding me about that goodies!!!

Lots of growth in last week. So with all that salvia how much sun are you giving them must it be full all day sun or is some morning or afternoon shade ok? Do you have any red salvia

Oh, man, yes, Wesley! It’s been a surprising week for growth in the garden! As far as I can tell, salvia wants ALL the sun. They will get a little wilty in the afternoon sun, but most things do, then they perk right back up! - I used to grow pineapple sage, which has red flowers when it blooms, but I grew it for the scent of the leaves and to make tea. I haven’t got any this year, but I do miss it!

I love the coral-nymph salvia, where did you buy it?

Isn’t it so sweet?!? I got it at Corner Copia Gardens in Fairhope, but it is super easy to start from seed!

4$ for lavender in 2023 what a steal. It's like 6 bucks at least probably 8 at Lowes here in Memphis.

Oh, wow! Isn’t it crazy how varied prices can be from one place to the other?!? What’s crazy too is that 15 years ago, when I had never grown anything ever, I bought some lavender and some tomato plants. I haphazardly plunked them into the ground and they grew into monsters! They made me feel like I could grow anything or at least lavender and tomatoes, but do you know what? I’ve never been able to replicate that phenomenal success with either plant ever since. I think it’s God’s way of keeping me humble. LOL!

Hi Rachael, could the unknown salvia be a “Veronica”? The 1st year they sleep, 2nd year they creep, 3rd year they leap. Deadhead them to get a new round to flush out.

Oh, I like that saying for plants, Cheryl!!! I think that salvia is the midnight meadow sage, salvia nemorosa. I’ve planted veronica one time and killed it dead within months. However, I did plant it in the ground, so I totally had help with the killing. LOL! I might try to grow it in a pot if I come across it for sale again because I do love its shape and the pale pink variety!
