The summer I ditched the pool and grew an ENTIRE YEAR'S worth of food. Here's how I did it!

- They said I was crazy! My friends, my family.....they all said I was nuts to sell our home and move to a larger property, build a massive garden, and spend the next 9 months growing most of my family's food.
Awesome video. You are not only feeding your family food, you are feeding your kids knowledge that will last them a lifetime.

My family and I always shelled dry beans indoors. We would watch a movie and split each pod by hand. It’s not a fast method, but if you’re going to be watching the movie anyway then there’s no time wasted.
That is a great way to do it! The kids probably would've liked that method instead of in the dark on the front porch. It was so funny to watch them beating those pillowcases though!
Probably the most import lesson I've learned in over 30 years of gardening is the importance of soil health. Nothing impacts the health and vigor of your plants more than the condition of your soil. Making your own compost, using only natural (not synthetic like Miracle Gro) fertilizers (Down to Earth has an amazing array of plant, animal, and mineral components), encouraging mycorrhizal and microbial growth by digging as little as possible, all contribute to a healthy soil. Once you realize that soil is a living organism, and make the shift from feeding plants to feeding the soil, your pest and disease problems will practically disappear, and your productivity will increase dramatically.
You are so very right! Because I took on this huge feat, I really focused on the plants and just doing what I could at the time. Over the past year, we have begun to make our own compost, and I used cover crops over the winter to help keep my soil healthy. I am learning each season and hope to do exactly as you said in your comment :)
Oh my goodness, you are absolutely amazing!! One bit of advice: On days that you are going to be canning all day, put a dinner in the crock pot. Put a roast, or a chicken in your slow cooker, with onions, potatoes, veggies, and seasonings for a full meal. Set out some paper bowls or plates, and some bread. (You don't need any more dirty dishes at the moment!) Sometimes, I do chili with beans. Great to eat in paper bowls, with cheese on top. This will eliminate the stress about feeding your family that evening. Dinner is done and ready, and your family members can serve themselves. You can grab a bowl in between canner loads. This is my best tip from years of canning.
I will definitely do that this coming season. That will be a huge time saver and stress reliever! Thank you for the wonderful advice.

Brought tears to my eyes to watch your children shelling the beans in the pillow cases, it brought me back to when my boys were young. You will not regret the hard work when you realize who they will be because of it, trust me on this one, they will have a true education because of all your work.
That is so refreshing to hear. My hope is that they learn a strong moral and work ethic and form lasting relationships with each other and remain close into adulthood. I moved to Barbados from the UK and have established my own vegetable garden. Your are right it is hard work with hits and misses but I enjoy it so much. Nothing beat cooking with food collected from your own garden. Thanks for this lovely realistic video.

There was no way that I could grow all this food, without ever having gardened before (except for going a few tomato and peppers from Lowes).....except that He blessed our garden and made these plants grow. He has plans for this garden and for our family and I am so grateful that He led us to where we are today!

In the south we eat the beans in the green stage and also blanche and freeze them. Many people can them but I find I prefer them from the freezer. We grow cow peas which you can shell and eat the green peas (delicious) plus we can leave a lot of them to dry for planting next season or eating them as dry peas. I'm impressed with all you've learned and that you are teaching the children how to be self sufficient in most of what they eat. We can't always grow everything, but we can grow something if we try.
That is so true! Even just growing a few plants can really change your perspective on things. I know more and more people are getting into gardening and growing food which is so wonderful. As far as cowpeas....I find myself in the summer constantly finding cowpeas in my kids and husbands pockets that they have swiped for snacks from the garden!

Yes! Thank you! They are always complaining that we have nothing good to eat. I have to remind them that we have ingredients......and that they need to take the time and make something with them. It is so hard to break away from the convenience of prepared foods.
Thankyou for being so real! I'm slowly turning my gardens into edible paradises. I'm using the forest method with planting guilds, but I'm not aiming for a years worth of food. It's not the right time in my life for me to intensely farm as you do. But I find "foraging" my garden exciting! There's nothing nicer than having something homegrown on your plate, even a small something. We no longer buy fresh tomatoes or strawberries from the supermarket as they just don't taste the same, we prefer to wait till they're in season again.

Way to be a rock star! Love the bit about librarians. lol I've always been told I'm great for circulation because I get so many, they even see what I have then put them on hold for themselves. Our library system in WI has about 65 to get books from.
That is awesome. Our libraries are a bit judgmental if you take too many books out! I have started to buy my books when I find a good deal so that we can start our own home library:)
I can't tell you how much this video touched my heart!! My husband and I are coming into two years in June of being on our raw land with no running water or electric and are living in an RV until we can build. My husband also works full time so it leaves me here to do the things you've described. It has been a blessing to see every day how God provides in all sorts of ways but it has also been a major challenge since we don't have children and it is just me.
There is literally not enough hours in the day for me to get everything done and I'm constantly trying to come up with ideas to help simplify what needs done.
God bless your efforts and you've earned a new subscriber. It's nice to know someone else gets what we are trying to achieve. That part has been the hardest because people unfortunately don't understand or care about the old ways.
It is very true that most people don't care to live this way. We have become so very comfortable with convenience and it is literally killing us and our nation. I have found over these past few years, that things become more streamlined as you get certain systems in place. Once we installed irrigation, not only to the garden, but to the animals as well, that simplified a lot of things. It is so very hard in the beginning, but it gets easier....I promise! Still a lot of work, but definitely more manageable. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I wish you the best on your journey!

Even on the hardest of days, when I am tired and aching, I can still see the miracle of what the Lord has done. There is no way to explain how I am able to grow this abundance without any past experience (other than a few tomato and pepper plants from Lowes). I can see the fruits of this labor in my children. The Lord has plans for this garden and I may not know what direction He is taking us in, but He is surely preparing us for something!

Some days you feel the failures more than the successes, but in the end we all remember why we're involved in this journey and know that every minute is absolutely worth it.

Super impressive!! I started a garden in the Palm Springs area and I just learn daily from you tube videos. I’m still learning 3 years later. Always trying new things and new veggies and fruit. Watering in 115- 120 degrees. So much fun! lol thanks for sharing!

My husband and I both grew up on farms and we now have our own Homestead as well. We have so many family and friends that only ever see the glorified version of a Homestead life. Such a great video, I love how honest you are about all the highs and lows of gardening. I also started getting into gardening and it’s not all just sunshine and roses but so worth it when you can eat your own home grown food. I’m grateful and priviliged to be able to do this, to afford the tools and supplies needed and have access to land.
I agree. We have been so blessed to have the means to do this as well. It was not cheap that first year. I could've saved a lot of money just going to the grocery store! Over time, and especially since inflation has raised food costs so drastically, we will make our money back.

Thank you! It is hard work and when I look back on my videos, they make these tasks look so easy and quick. The reality is much different that what anyone sees online. You just cannot convey how much work it is! But I love it and wouldn't change it for anything. I never wanted to garden, or have animals etc.....I didn't know what I was missing!

Yes your video was absolutely inspirational! By Gods grace and mercy we are able to "till the soil" and watch Gods goodness at work.
It still amazes me that you can take one tiny seed and put it in the ground, and He will make it grow and produce so very much!
All those fresh young pea leaves, bean leaves, sweet potato leaves, even the young pumpkin leaves and pepper leaves, are edible! There's a whole nuther crop to harvest early after planting the seeds, and they freeze wonderfully. Older leaves can go to chickens or rabbits. Harvesting some of the youngest leaves on each plant will help the plant send the energy to the fruit! Beautiful beautiful garden ! I love how the kids get worn out with the pillowcases :)
Shelling the beans was so fun to watch when I was editing. I don't always see everything, but when I film it, I get a whole different perspective:). Some of my limitations with using the leaves is that I don't quite know how to prepare them. I find myself putting them in the compost because I just don't have a plan for them. Each year I learn a little more.....so maybe this year will be the year I learn to cook them:)

I love watching your videos…I grew up gardening with my grandparents and parents. I spent years developing their gardens and did not work so much in my own. I just have a few things I grow now, in a couple of raised beds and a few large containers. It still is more than enough to share with friends, family, and neighbors. I miss those days of starting at sunrise and finishing long after the sun would set. The processing days of massive hauls of all sorts of food. ..green beans, corn, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes (Grandmas words), tomatoes, melons, berries…the list goes on and on. I have several favorite homestead families (yours included) that I watch… i dream about vacationing and volunteering on the farms of my favorite CZcamsrs…. HaHa
I promise I’m not crazy, just a very young boomer (I am the very youngest age of the official US Baby Boom years)…a badge I proudly wear. Much like you I worry and fret and pray about the state of our country and our future. There are some things slowly changing that give me a bit more hope. It seems like some of the younger generation are noticing the things being added or changed in our food, the bio sludge, bio solids allowed in ORGANIC fertilizers and so much more. We can only each do our best…Was watching watching your Cane Corsica video about added layers of safety re. your food supply. I hope you have now found lots of additional layers of protection. Harvesting and preserving as a family like you describe sounds so nostalgic. I wish as a child I had those experiences. I am glad that my children are able to make these memories. I never would've imagined that I would grow my families food. I was set on living in the city, having material things etc. When the food shortages hit in 2020, it scared me so badly and that is what pushed me into this. But I am so glad it did. It is so fulfilling.....even when we face failures and disappointments.

I'm so glad that you enjoyed it. It was definitely a transition from no garden to this massive one, with a bit of complaining. But over time, the kids have come to enjoy the time in the garden and I think it has taught them some great lessons on hard work and working together for a common goal.

What a spectacular farm and video! THANK you for sharing your appreciation for how hard the work truly is. I've been gardening since I was 6 years old. There was no choice. You either helped mom and dad or you starved. Besides, there was no other alternative back in those days unless you lived in a city eating dead food from a can or box.
I am 61 and still gardening. There was a period when I chased after the "American nightmare" and ended up destroying my digestive system with fake foods. 20 years ago I went back to the old ways of eating real food that has life in it.
What a joy it is to see young women caring enough for their children to feed them what their organic bodies NEED!!

Thank you for those kind words. There are so many times that I feel as though not many people understand why I work so hard to produce food when I could just go to the grocery store. It is so refreshing to read your comment and see that I am not the only one who values this lifestyle. I just wish I came to do it sooner! And imagine what society would be like if we had kept the backyard garden / farm. I not only thing we would be healthier, but better as a society as well.

Wow, you are teaching your children growing techniques that will help them for ever, well done. I just have small garden and its alot of work. I live in Florida. The snails and slugs get most of what i grow. I think iam going to go to a farmer's market and buy bulk and learn to can stuff. Maybe i will have something for use later, or i might just keep feeding the snails. Idk best wishes to you.
Snails are a pain. I've not had too many problems with them, but occasionally if we have a rainy season, they will show up in the garden. I have seen people use ducks to eat the snails. I wonder if they would just eat the snails and leave the garden produce alone?
If you can get seaweed and make compost tea, you can grow cauliflower and brussle sprouts and anything else.
When I grew up in New England, we had seaweed everywhere! Here in SC we are about 4 hours from the beach. I envy anyone that lives close to the coast for that reason! Except during hurricane season.😅

I love the library. That was one of my favorite parts of this journey. If you find any books that you absolutely love, put them on a list and buy them when you can so you'll always have that resource. We always try to expand our home library! I love having as much information at my finger tips as possible.

Super encouraging. First, how many mouths were you working to feed? Second, how large would you say your growing space is? And third, do you have two spaces: one in rows and one with raised beds, or did your rows become raised beds (or vice versa) over time? Thanks for all of the tips!
We are a family of 6, and I try to supply my elderly neighbors with food as well. I have both raised beds (58 of them) and a 70x60 in-ground garden. Since I had no experience, I went with raised beds because many people say you cannot grow in the red clay in SC. As we were building that garden, I read a book about a market gardener and how they prepare new garden space (laying cardboard over the area and topping with about 8 inches of compost and soil). So, the kids and I tried their technique and it has worked wonderfully and provided so much more growing space.
I was born and raised in Maine but not in potato country. I didn't get time off from school but I did have to spend my summers working in the hay fields.
I wonder if it was just a certain part of Maine. I lived in NH at the time so maybe it was a county that bordered NH. I remember so many of my classmates being upset about the "vacation" that the kids in Maine were getting! Hay sounds like a lot of work! And a lot of allergies!

Yup, you couldn’t describe it better!!! Did a lot of years of hard work, but it’s so enjoyable if you have pasión for gardening, I even made it as a temple where I prayed and if you observed nature deeply you will finish with a wonderful relationship with GOD!!!!
Well said! I don't think it's possible to garden and not see His creation and blessing in all of it. Even at the end of the worst day, I am still excited the next morning to do it all over again.
I am glad you are in a position where you can do this. Think of how much exercise you and the children are getting! And how much better you are eating. For the last 12 years i worked with my husband doing farm related work. It starts about the same time the gardens get growing. So anything good goes down hill quite rapidly. Our work is daylight to dark! I get really frustrated. My husband says we can eat better buying at the store. It is a lot less work that way but i like the work and the food is way better! The three spaghetti squash 8 cheated the groundhog out of last year kept all these months. Cooked one yesterday and it was good. Can't wait to plant more this year .
The grocery store is definitely easier, but what they allow in our food has changed so much for the worse over the past 30 years. The garden takes so much time, but I am amazed at how excited I am every morning when I get to go back down and work the next day! As for the exercise.....I used to run every morning, until I started gardening. Ive never been so fit in my life!

Hey there sister. This was a different kind of video. I appreciated your honesty and I could feel the passion in your voice. I been growing in this location now 18 years. My advice is don't give up on a particular veg if u aren't successful, jus give up on that variety. The longer i grow food i find that variety is paramount. Soil health is also top priority. Stick with, looks like u have knack for it.
Lastly, don't even bother with Brussel sprouts unless they are hybrid varieties.
And i would say hybrid cauliflower varieties should definitely increase your chance of that elusive first head. Aswell giving the cauliflower more time then what is said on the seed packet. Also, increase the liquid fertilizer schedule on the cauliflower once u see a baby button of a head deep inside the center leaves. Here in zone 8 coastal Va i typically have bigger better heads of cauli. in spring. Hopefully this can help. Good luck 🤞
Thank you for that advice. I will definitely do that this season for my cauliflower. We tried Romanesco Cauliflower in the fall with absolutely no heads so I ended up picking up a hybrid from Johnny Seeds to try in the spring garden. Every year I learn so much. I really wanted to convey to people what it looks like to grow this amount of food. So often, my videos make gardening look so easy and quick... more of a hobby.....but it is really a full time job.
