  • 💙 'I was starting to get known as Demon Copperhead. You can't deny, it's got a power to it.' Winner of both the Women's Prize for Fiction & the Pulitzer Prize for 2023, it's turning into quite the year for Barbara Kingsolver! Join the bestselling author in conversation with novelist, filmmaker and fellow Women’s Prize winner Ruth Ozeki as Barbara celebrates the release of her latest novel, Demon Copperhead.
Demon’s story begins with his traumatic birth to a single mother in a single-wide trailer, looking ‘like a little blue prize-fighter’. For the life ahead of him he would need all of that fighting spirit, along with buckets of charm, a quick wit, and some unexpected talents, legal and otherwise.
We befriend Demon on his journey through the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, the dizzying highs of true love, and the crushing losses that can accompany it. Demon is the voice of a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they can't imagine leaving behind.
In conversation with Ruth for this Fane Online event, Barbara explores the inspiration behind her new book, a vivid reimagination of David Copperfield for the modern age. She considers the importance of telling the story of the American opioid crisis and why she turned to Dickens for inspiration, a man who spent his career protesting the ravages of poverty on children, in rollicking tales that made the whole world listen.
Suffused with truth, anger and compassion, watch a conversation with one of the greatest writers of our time as she shares an epic tale of love, loss and everything in between.
Barbara Kingsolver in conversation with Ruth Ozeki was originally broadcast on Tue 18 October 2022.

I’m listening to this audiobook right now. I have not read Dickens. It’s interesting how he spoke to BK. This is my first book of hers. So you can see this gal from Appalachia has some good reads on deck! The writing is so true, I found myself wanting to meet Demon! I had to REMIND myself that it’s a novel. Appreciate this video so much! Thank you both so much!

I loved this book. Really really loved it. But I’m sorry my favourite is still Prodigal Summer and I can’t shift that. Demon is beautifully written and a total page turner and really awakening and educational. But of course it’s gruelling because the subject she’s highlighting is a sad one and David Copperfield suffers a great deal before the resolution.
Whereas PS is pure, perfect escapism and beauty, where the less attractive characters’ layers fall away and each one improves upon knowing them better.
DC maybe my second favourite now though ❤

Wonderful book. And fascinating discussion with insights from ms kingsolver.
One part is a problem for me and my little brain. I just can’t go along with her conclusion that the people -rural and Appalachian, have been forgotten and are uncared about by politicians.
The democrats have worked hard to make things better for all and especially those that have no access to healthcare, childcare, quality education, even broadband. Dems have tried to help. No they aren’t perfect but the republicans are successful in rural areas despite the fact that they do zero to make the lives of those folk any better.

The Appalachian people have been exploited for decades if not centuries. Right now the region has fallen for under the FOX and Trump SPELLS. They are a people who consistently vote against policies that would help them. They are suckers for manners and authority to the extent that they cannot see the truth. IMHO. God love them! ❤️

Healthcare is more than Obamacare/access to insurance. How do you find a doctor or a hospital when there are none where you live? Or, you have no car to drive to where those services exist? I'm a democrat and I think I know what Kingsolver is saying about class. Where I grew up there was one hospital and few doctors in the entire county. My mother died after being told she had the flu at that hospital. Two hours after leaving the hospital she died from the heart attack she was having. My father died of lung cancer. An X-Ray of his chest (done at the same hospital) showed a mass in his lung, but the radiologist didn't seem to see it. I grew up in the foothills of the Appalachians in southern Ohio.

Horrible experiences. I’m so sorry. What you say is absolutely correct.
But my point still stands- though not all problems are easily solvable, the democrats are the only party that is interested in attempting to solve the problems experienced every day in Appalachia. And residents there steadfastly refuse to vote for democrats. Such a shame.

@Paulinrnke You are preaching to the choir. I agree it seems my people are voting against their own self interests, but this is more about emotion than political policy and programs. Little of either has trickled down from D.C. to be recognizable as bona fide help. Where I grew up, unemployment rate is 25%. There's no high speed internet, no hospital maternity ward within 25 miles, no trusting politicians. You believe they should be grateful to a political party? They like the orange Q tip because he's NOT a politician and he expresses their anger and any change might be better than none.

Please explain. I’m interested in hearing your thoughts.
(I’m not sure she is asking to “represent”. But she is an expert. And she’s a native. And it’s ok that different residents draw different conclusions. )
