  • For many of us, social media is the portal into the lives of outdoor photographers and filmmakers. We see the images and the films they create, but it can be a bit of a mystery for how it all works behind the lens. Today we talk to climber Austin Siadak, a photographer and filmmaker who has worked on many different outdoor film projects, to get a glimpse of what it takes to create and capture incredible outdoor stories.
Films and photographers mentioned in this episode:
    The Alpinist with Marc-Andre Leclerc
    Mikey Schaefer
Meru by Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk

From what I saw of Marc in The Alpinist, soloing in wild places made him feel free. So, rather than being focused on the increased risks associated with soloing in such a remote area at that time of year, he saw the situation as an increase in freedom.

i am not a climber but i watched some content of alex before, so i thought i give alpinist a try without knowing anything of marc andre before. after 15-20 minutes i was shocked of the risks he was taking all the time. i paused the movie because i was convinced that no-one can survive that lifestyle and i wanted to check if he is still alive before i continued the movie. i was not able to finish the movie...

These guys are on a whole different level of how they see the world, & life. So calm in the face of potential annihilation. Such confidence in what they do but yet such humble dudes. Like a couple of stoners casually going over death defying feats. Awesome.

Awesome conversation. I just watched THE ALPINIST two days ago and I’ve re watched it 3x since.
What an amazing way to live life.
    It’s sad that Marc died
But it seems he was very well aware that this was a constant possibility, and the risk was worth it to him.
    Simply incredible

Think again about your comment that "overconfidence has nothing to do with an avalanche."

  • @robertdigrappa8660
    @robertdigrappa8660 Před 6 měsíci +5

All the major climbers in the world said he was pushing it, that he was getting too comfortable and then leaving you without a way down in the case that he fell, was another reason he got too sure of his abilities. It was a tragic end. I went to war at 18 for adventure, but it was the grace of God I lived, I should have died at least a half a dozen times, wouldn't do it again as a shooter, a medic maybe. If he's a legend to you, go ahead and follow his example and see what happens. And again, too comfortable, there's no "shoulda, woulda, coulda."

You can't argue religion and politics and with people whose heroes are relegated to the former. I'm sorry for the loss of two young lives, having lived and skied at Jackson Hole for almost 15 years and worked with the ski patrol, not on the patrol, and saw even ski patrollers lose their lives in bounds, it's a risk.

@robertdigrappa8660 you cant live your adventures just to tell other people to not do it... he decided that his abilities were sufficient to do that without a rope and time told that he was right.

Comfy risk management. It helps to become one like a magnet 🧲
That’s why I practice down climbing as a ritual
