Why is D&D So Popular Again? (ft. The Russo Brothers, Deborah Ann Woll & More)

- The Russo Brothers, Deborah Ann Woll, Joe Manganiello, and more join D&D heavyweights to detail the contributing factors to D&D's remarkable resurgence in recent years.
Dungeons & Dragons has been around since 1974, and by the end of the 1980s, tens of millions of players worldwide were plundering dungeons and slaying dragons. Though interest had waned a bit since the 1990s, D&D remained one of the most popular games in all of geekdom.
Now, more than 45 years after the birth of the game, D&D has more players than ever. But why has this traditionally stigmatized game become so incredibly successful? We asked some of the biggest names in the world of Dungeons & Dragons what they think makes D&D a critical hit.

"If it's so popular, how come I can never get everyone together one night to play?" -Every DM watching this
Because once all your players are adults they have adult responsibilities and far less time to play. Couple that with everyone having different schedules and it becomes so difficult to play a campaign. One-shots are unfortunately better once you are an adult. It is a sad truth :( I really, really wish I could go back to the days where I could play 2-4 nights a week for hours on end. Sometimes being in 3+ campaigns at a time.
If you did it every day, it wouldn't feel as special as it should. Which is why I would vote for playing D&D on weekend nights, Friday through Sunday
Once retirement comes, the fun really begins!
I mean, the group I'm in is comprised of all adults and we all manage to meet up once a week every week. I guess we're a rarity.
@@Harbinger10892 My group is 3 players and one DM, across 3 different time zones, all with vastly different availability. We play over Roll20 and Discord, and the biggest issue we have with scheduling is that the DM has to spend a lot of time creating assets so we can progress the story. If the players love playing the game, they'll make themselves available whenever possible.
I really agree with the sentiment that we as humans **need** to tell stories and D&D is probably one of the best ways for people to do that in a friendly, non-judgmental environment.
I agree, also the stories should take place in equally friendly and non-judmental environments.
If you think about it Historically, We Humans have been Using Storytelling as a source of entertainment, exchanging of information, and for lesson teaching for thousands of years! So to say we appeal to it because its in our ancestry is an appropriate response lol

Dude, I'm 26 and start playing D&D in 2019 too, and I totally agree with you, the thing is, the majority of people our age still look at this like a waste of time because they think a game of "pen and paper" based on conversation is boring, why describing things when you have screens, and that's sad... at least some people wake up after seeing this incredible experiences online and try the game. its not just analog. Sites like roll20 and fantasy grounds allow you to make friends around the world and play DnD with voice and a digital representation of dice and monsters.
Thanks for this info!!
I play mostly on roll20 with Discord for voice chat, and it's amazing!
Agreed, I have groups that players are each from a different country. Fantasy grounds and discord.
This comment needs more likes. Roll20 and the other online tabletop platforms are wrongfully ignored in the video, and they have a huge impact. Think of all the adults who have busy lives that can take a moment to sit down in their homes and play rather than having to perform calculus to get local friends' schedules to align. That kid who can't afford other video games also gets a free outlet. And everyone who might be too shy to ask around for people who play have a resource where they know they will find similarly interested people. There are loads of benefits these systems to provide, and lets be honest, Roll20 was the first to offer the high production value and should have been spotlighted in this video.
I don't know many people who use roll20/other online sites that didn't already play D&D anyway. Roll 20 is super hard to learn how to use if you don't already know how to play D&D well. It can be incredibly confusing for a group of people all wanting to play for the first time.
As someone who started playing in 1st edition and had to deal with Satanic Panic, and all the stereotypes my whole life. Just thinking about how popular this game has become makes me feel so vindicated. I love it so much.

CG Rogue here. I played my first game of D&D at 9 years old. It was 1984. The last time I played D&D was last Saturday. I've fallen off the hobby for a few years at a time, but I always come back. I love this game.
I started d&d back in 1984, back in Toronto, learning how to play at 12 in Saturday morning schools that were popular at the time (they were free schools where kids could learn things like photography, computer programming as well as book clubs and get tutoring). I remember spending all my money on the player's handbook, the dm's guide and the monster manual (the basics) and eventually campaign books. It was EVERYTHING to my childhood....until I discovered girls 3 years later.
Still, it holds a special place in my heart.
Been playing for 35 years and I'm so happy to see this newest generation that's grown up with D&D in the background embrace it and how easy it is now to find a group and play. Long may it continue.
Same here, just over 35 years. Had a big gap in the middle unfortunately but now I’m teaching it to my kids and introducing them to this marvelous world of d&d.
35 year veteran as well. Seeing this game explode into the mainstream the way it has these past few years has been one of the highlights of my life.
Update....had my son ask me over the weekend if I thought he’d ever be able to one day be a DM......guess I’m doing something right.
I played DnD back in the day from '82 to '94 or so until Magic the Gathering took over my interest. Studying the adventures and running them, or playing in one, was a lot more real and fulfilling than watching most tv shows or movies, reading most books, or being in touch with the current pop culture. I enjoyed the complexity of the Outer Planes and the possibilities they represent - for example, imagining the difference between shedding your mortal coil and ending up at your final plane vs. choosing to visit the planes as an adventurer while alive. The game's many subjects was a safe character study of possibilities. 3rd edition changed things a bit, as did 4th and 5th edition. It isn't the same, especially with all the other kinds of very popular game forms out there (massive online games, internet culture, etc.) But popularities circle around. LEGO was popular, then Minecraft, and now we have LEGO Minecraft. DnD was popular, then Massive online RPGs were popular, then 4e was described as a massive online style of many many powers you tick off as a player character. That faded away and now we have 5th edition which is more a return to form. Still not the same, though - those days of old I don't think will ever be back.
kilroy987 but the new is so awesome, it’s like beatlemania
@@iOnRX9 My online group is playing the Paizo games for now. But DnD will always be my teenage years and lower 20s jam. 4e though, I try to forget about that.
back in 2014 I was a senior in high school, when 5e came out. I had no money, none of the core rules, just paper, pencils, and imagination. Thanks to the base rules being free I bought a d20 and my friends and I made it work. 6 years later now, I run a weekly game for 6 players who became some of my best friends, through this hobby. Thank you WOTC for making it so easy and accessible, you've earned a lifelong customer.
This makes me unbelievably happy, and yet horribly sad at the same time. I absolutely love playing D&D. A few close friends and I had a campaign going for over a year, but then work schedules changed and we haven't been able to play for longer than that. I cant bring myself to find a "public" campaign, because I'm scared of not being able to get along with the people playing.
I haven't started a campaign yet, but I have made a character and am supposed to start one at my friend's house this Friday.

I'm 42, I've grown up with the Internet and computers. By some standards I'm practically a luddite, I have no social media, still buy all my music on CD or vinyl, no longer play video games, and I'm returning to my interest in traditional games like chess, D&D and wargames. I think it's my experience with technology which makes me distrust it so much. I've used dozens of different operating systems, gone through dozens of computers, I have a shelf of obsolete hard drives,. I have lost all kinds of data, I have had hard disks crash on me, and have seen how anything more than 5 years old on the Internet vanishes or becomes impossible to find. I have no great memories from any of the time I've spent online, but still remember D&D sessions from high school (American: middle school) 30 years ago. That's why I'm returning to the hobby.

I would recommend to get the Starter kit or the Essentials kit if you dont want to create your own story from scratch
starter kit if your DM is also brand new to D&D or if your group doesn’t have a DM and one of you have to take the plunge but the essentials kit is really great too and you can mix them together as they take place in the same hub location!
Also buy a bunch of dice on the cheap from amazon ebay or wish because sharing dice the first few sessions were a pain! 😅 eventually you’ll all want your own unique cool dice and become dice goblins too!
Sean Ferrol Seconded - I've run a single session of the Starter Set premade adventure, and my friends and I had an absolute blast. They're entirely new, and my only experience has been more Critical Role watching than I care to admit, but it's really easy to get going with.

No. D&D had been around for ages. What changed was the perception of it as not being the goofy game a bunch of losers play on a Friday night and being able to actually see how the game is played and what it's all about as opposed to listening to someone try to explain it. I should know, my girlfriend once tried to ask me about D&D and even though I tried to put it in as simple of terms as I could she thought "no that's too complicated" but when I showed her Dice, Camera Action and Critical role that's when she realized "oh, okay it's actually pretty simple and looks like fun"

That's not what they did on Stranger Things!!!" He thought D&D was a boardgame with figures you move on a board LOL
I mean it kinda is, I've always preferred playing on maps than purely theatre of mind, how else are you supposed to maximize the damage on that fireball? 🙃 but I still enjoy pure imagination games too
lol. I've played both ways. One group never had a map and the DM just explained our relative positioning and let us move when we needed to. The games I'm in now are on Roll20, though, so we use the maps pretty extensively.
Most games rely on their structure to carry the players through the experience. Using your imagination is precisely what makes ttrpg’s so fulfilling. But the imagination is like a muscle; the more you use it, the easier it gets
He may be more of a visual kind of guy then. A mini map, or some terrain pieces might be the way to go for him. I've played without, and with maps, as well as with mini terrain pieces. I really like the last option the best, even though it takes more work.
We always used figures or pennies when we didn't have any figures.
I think what has helped D&D more than anything is the fact that ever since the time the Lord of the Rings movies came out there has been a shift in perception towards nerds.
Before it made you a bit of a social outcast but now it has become somewhat trendy and is almost a prerequisite for being considered likeable. The presence of IT and the internet everywhere and the fact that those nerdy kids from the 80s and 90s have now become adults without ever shedding their habits will also have helped quite a bit.
It's basically the story of Rock n' Roll all over again. When it started it was considered immoral and outrageous, 20 years later it was still around and nobody was batting an eyelid any more.
Actually i dont really think that lord of the rings did help- it was released in 2001 - dnd sales were still low, but stranger things released 2016. The awesome twitch streams help to promote dnd. But ultimately its because dungeons and dragons is such an amazing experience, that people watch it and want to be a part of it.
Let's just say D&D has a critical role in our lives.
I used to play a lot of role playing games when I was a kid in the 80's (D&D, Robotech, Rift, etc) It was a place for the not-so-cool kids to let their imaginations run free and to be able express themselves in a place when folks who "two strapped" back packs and read books was uncool. I had no idea that D&D had this kind of audience now. I'm glad to see things have changed.
Been D&Ding since 2007 and the endless of ideas is truly amazing!
I've been playing and running games for 30 years I would love to play with a lot of the people in this video.
"There are the stereotypes..."
Cut to Kevin Smith
We started playing last year and now have 3 campaigns, of which I'm a DM of one. And I just started to DM another game because people from work were interested too. I absolutely love it and so do the rest. And this version is so easy to learn. Even DM'ing is not super hard. Although I did have the advantage that my DM had been playing since ADnD so he helped me a lot.
I first discovered D&D through Projared of all people, and then on to Dice, Camera, Action. After the drama, I really hope that show comes back on
My first experience of DnD was through Stranger Things. Usually the simplest explanation is the best one.
Lol exactly
Side note check out the fan made sci-fi module Dark Matter for 5E lots of fun if you like DND 5E but are missing that sci-fi kick ;)
So much of this focus is on face-to-face but I have played more DnD over the internet in quarantine than ever before.
As a befinner dm i really like how you can play the game without knowing all the ruled. It makes it a lot easier and probably a lot more fun for the players
If Shaggy endorses D&D, i'm in.
DnD is and always be one of the best games I have ever played PERIOD. Yes I know my opinion is biased but I don't care, as long as your capable of imagining something being told to you, and you have a decent DM anyone can get into it!
a great way to get people together. it helps social interaction as well getting people to think outside the box.
One of the best video about the rise of modern D&D that I have seen.
DnD was always popular been playing for 30+ years. It’s only now that’s it’s gone sort of mainstream.
Judging from these comments, actually playing D&D isn't necessarily more popular - talking about & watching other people "play" is popular.
"but that's a whole other video." Hopefully literally, because that topic sounds fascinating.
D&D actually saved my life. If it werent for D&D when I was a kid, a period in time when I was bullied day in and day out, I might not be here today.
Great video, this is kind of content I love to watch
I like the ending with Patrick lol. Any chance the full interview can be released as some kind of extra?
I mean... you can put a microphone in front of that guy and gold comes out. If only he could write as quickly as he can talk hahahaha
Play DnD! Play a chaotic neutral orphan rogue, kill and/or seduce dragons, attack pirates, become pirates and then kill other pirates!
I started playing with the nerds at college using 3.5. now im hooked.
Shiny dice also help.
Really well done video wow! I never even played D&D and I felt super stoked about it just watching haha
You should drop by your local games shop and check it out.
