Uh, I’m sure Drew hooked it up already with this series, all things considered. Bodanza basically went to disc golf camp- flew in, lived with the guy, trained with him for 5 days, and even had some home cooked meals thrown in! All on like 3 days notice… I’m sure what ever Drew charged was plenty generous enough.

watched some of the videos and checked out overthrows review of it. i took the mental cue of keeping my feet parallel onto the course and had a big improvement to my consistency. the course is a very scoring course but i threw more park jobs in both of the rounds than i have on easier courses. something like 60% birdie rate. so i appreciated you guys getting together and sharing the time together for others to use as a platform for form discussion. you have more of an impact than you know.

  • @Chris.Davies

There are normally four stages of competence as you learn a new thing: Unconscious incompetent, Conscious incompetent, Conscious competent, and Unconscious competent. However, I think there are two more which need to be added in my view: Conscious Expert, and Unconscious Expert.
Why? Because these two extra stages decide whether or not a person can (or can't!) be an effective teacher. It is certainly true that extremely physically talented players will progress directly from "Unconscious competent" to "Unconscious expert" without ever passing through the "Conscious expert" phase - and these people are incapable of teaching anyone anything, because they literally have no idea what it is they do to achieve their success. A great example of this is Paul McBeth, whose teaching style boils down to, "Watch what I do, and do it like me."
Whereas, players who work hard to pass through the "Conscious expert" phase must develop a fundamental understanding of their own form, in order to progress it. And so it is ONLY these players who are able to become good teachers of the sport - especially at the top end of the game.
Drew - I think you are a player who worked hard to make your way through the "Conscious expert" phase.

I’ve been in the same boat as Anthony. Playing three years, throw 420-430 consistently, 450 on a mash and my absolute max has been 471/72/74. I’ve been changing up my form doing a couple small things one thing at a time. It’s slowly working but I really enjoyed you talking about the “feel” of it.
You see a lot of these bigger form guys and they talk about the mechanics of it, and I totally respect the ability to be a coach. But sometimes the “feel” of it is a huge deal as well. Like sure there’s a lot of mechanics involved but at a certain point you seem to have to have faith that your body will figure it out as well.

One of the hardest things to coach is for someone to essentially eat shit for a bit to ramp it up later.
They wanna push to hard to quick. Just gotta slow down and get the control and slowly build the timing.
It takes time to build that power and control it. Cant jump steps. Gotta get it solid.

I’m don’t think you directly answered the questions infered by your video title: What did you expect from coaching and what did you actually get? But, I think we got the gist of it from what you said.
It’s good you understand Anthony and you clearly like him. His videos, while generally good, make me crazy becauase he talks fast and doesn’t stop talking, saying things that are not needed. It’s like there is no filter, he’s just thinking aloud. The same is pretty much true when he was being coached. Not to say he shouldn’t ask questions, but he would do better by listening more and focusing on what you had to say. You were so good to listen to him and try to respond to his concerns and then bring the conversation back to what you were trying to teach. Your maintaining focus is why you were able to help him improve. In looking at the other comments, many others think you helped them, too. And that is a big positive. Well done, Drew.

@@DrewGibsonI tend to agree, altho I’m about as far from pro level as one can be. I have a son in Denver metro, I live in Houston… I really enjoy getting up there to visit and throw (love the high altitude courses), and discs do fly differently at my arm speed, but not really for distance more just shot shape. He’s a much better disc golfer than me, but when he comes down to the humid flatlands he remarks on the changes in shot shape as well - but just in pure distance he mostly doesn’t see much difference. Just needs to adjust stability choice a bit for a given shot shape.

I would recommend to throw more understable discs in to the tailwind, you can then throw more towards to up, and not getting early fade, because the disc still wants to turn over. In the tailwind a faster disc is harder to handle when comparing to putter or middlerange. Slower disc doesnt want to fall to the ground same way as the faster disc.

I dunno man. I think hes a talented young man that's probably gonna go on to do great things, but I think he's getting down on himself for an added 50 feet. He seems to think he absolutely needs that succeed. He's at a massive disadvantage because of his size and he wants to bomb like the 6 foot plus guys. I think he is waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy to hard on himself and expects waaaaaaay to much of himself. I'm not saying it's bad to set goals and infact it's extremely inspiring and just overall amazing but I do think he expects to much. He's been playing for what maaaayyyyybe 2 years? I don't even think it's been that long and is already telling himself he plans to make the tour and win a mpo event?!!! While that's an amazing goal and is great that he has it people like him who expect to much of themselves scare me because I'm that SAME EXACT WAY and it's soooooo easy to get discouraged and beat yourself up and then get burned out. He's amazing for only playing for such a short period of time. It has taken me well over 10 years to even scratch the 500 foot mark so to see him getting close is amazing but I do worry he sets himself up for failure sadly. Although I can absolutely relate because I'm the same exact way and if anyone ever tells me that I almost get offended so I shouldn't really be saying anything 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

lol I relate to this comment because it's exactly how I'd react to someone who was like me. But I think you'll get that to me, the big goal isn't intimidated but exciting. I understand it could (and maybe should) be a years long process, but trying to expedite it is always fun, and will likely get me closer!
(also to the MPO win point, peep a future vid, or just check my PDGA I guess ;) )
I understand my relationship to goals are different than many, and less of expectations than opportunities! Hope you feel a kindred spirit in that :)

@@BodanzaDiscGolf yeah I definitely understand all this lol. I can whole heartedly relate to everything you just said. You're definitely crushing it man and I'm very excited to see what comes of it! It's always exciting to see someone get so invested in something whatever it may be. Also I know the feeling of being truly intrigued by something and falling head first into. When u find something I love doing I'd say I go waaaaaaaaaay to overboard to the point where normally my girlfriend has to bring me back down to earth and make me calm down lol. But yeah man you're truly a joy to watch and I'm sure you're going to make something of this regardless of where the road takes you!

I think asides from fine tuning his form, as a coach should, Bodanza should have spent a little more time doing those practice rounds with you at the pro level events. you're right that him putting the camera down was the best move he could do for himself, despite his whole youtube channel, because all of this form practice and relying on film is only going to set the habit that he cannot fix anything in the middle of a pro tour event without film, which is totally unrealistic.

Hot take: I think you should be able to throw 500+ ft if you want to coach someone else to do it. I've encountered and gotten "coaching" from several more experienced players who actually didn't have a clue what they were talking about. Each of them throw under 400ft. I now can hit 500+. There are a bunch of things that they were telling me that were just dead wrong.
Too often people rely on "theoretical knowledge" instead of proven or experienced knowledge.Someone might think they know what perfect form looks like, but chances are if you're maxing a 350, you really don't.

To be fair that video with Brody was one of the least helpful form videos

Well I was trying to help Brodie with that video not help CZcams. Brodie was much less advanced at the time of that video so was harder to help him while also helping others.

i think the coaching was fundamentally flawed, i wouldve started with moving through the correct positions slowly rather than have him just mash until he got it right (and never did)
