Anyone know the line up (musicians) on these tapes? Obviously a mix tape. MANY thanks for posting.
One of my all time favorite bands! I met Daevid, Gilli, etc at a couple of shows and actually was invited to sit in (play along) by Didier at a show in a small Paris bar (with Faton Cahen on keys!) on the second night of a three night gig they were doing. Didier noticed me in the front row (there were only 20 or so in the audience). We chatted in the alley during their break.
Next night, he asks me to sit in (talk about basement tapes… I recorded that night on cassette, still have it)
During their alley break the next night, he grabs me by the arm and says, be sure to come back tomorrow. We’ve got a special guest coming… but he wouldn’t say who.
Of course I was coming back the third night irrespective…
But they moved from the bar to a small theatre in back (aux DesChargeurs, for anyone who knows the locale in Paris) the next night and I didn’t even think to join in on percussion as I had the previous night.
Not when the special guest is Pierre Moerlen…

I had a somewhat sheltered existence after high school. No friends, no social life. I was living in Cincinnati after high school, and was trying to work, live, and make a life. I frequented many used record stores in the area, and discovered music that changed me for the better. I had mainly listened to popular stuff played on the radio, but found a whole new world of music out there. Gong, Camel. Gentle Giant, String Driven Thing, Hawkwind, and a comedy record called dope on dope and dope dupes. Gave College a try, and we were all turning each other on to stuff we liked that the others never heard of. Gong has been a mainstay for me since 1977.

I only ever saw New York Gong- Daevid with the Zu band, aka Material. I put on the show, got to interact with Daevid and Gilli..some of the New York guys were miffed (putting it lightly!) when they thought they weren't going to get paid (again)... They'd just come from LA, where they got screwed) Kramer in particular was a real asshole!.. never liked him much after that, although Bongwater was alright, and he made a couple records w. Hugh Hopper jealous!..) Harry Williamson was with Gilli, was super cool and prosaic about the whole "not getting paid" thing. We'd all revisit that fiasco on New Years Day 1981, at the disasterous gig I've mentioned elsewhere...

Originated in England Daevid Allen was a guest at Robert Wyatt's house in Canterbury. They both helped to form Soft Machine, an idyosyncratic group going from Dada ansurdity to long improvisational tracks like Gong would later indulge.
On a return visit from a French gig, Daevid Allen Australian by birth and co founder of the Beatnik movement over there, found that his visa had expired so had to stay in France - where Gong was born - there was a mixture of French and English musicians including Daevid Allens wife who sings engaging ditties (she's English I think) ...
