To put a quick silence on the left hand thread confusion - LEFT HAND THREAD IS ALWAYS MARKED ON THE NUT (every edge of the hex is notched to indicate it is left hand thread). This is also often only used on the gas connection side.

Ken, I just came across your tutorials on Welding and I was fascinated by it. I plan on doing some art sculpture out of metal & will be welding in the near future. Now that I have found you, I will be listening and watching to learn something I may not already know. My father was a welder/steam-pipe fitter for 42 years when he finally retired. As a child, my father would teach me different techniques and we would create all different size animals. We went to the junkyard first and quickly found all of the parts( nuts, bolts, small pieces of sheet metal, rods both, threaded and smooth). That is where I got my love for junk stores and Junkyards. I am very lucky to find the things I need for projects and that is mainly because our society is used to being a "throw-away society". You need to use your imagination to take an old toaster, take it apart, and create something new out of the parts. Thanks, Ken!!

Might want to suggest using a fixed wrench to turn the gas on/off,during the initial blow-off,. If you have a problem switching the ratchet from open to close your small unvented room could fill with gas. Good reason to first check your area for any ignition or flame sources. Like a pilot light in a gas appliance. Good concise video.

Thanks for the upload. Couple points I'd like to add, 1 open oxy cyl main valve SLOWLY to protect regulator, and backseat it! ...stay out of the direction of the reg adjustment screw should it become a projectile, 2: acetylene wrench is to be non-ratcheting, opened 1/4 to 1 turn only and key left on cylinder until done.

Excellent video for the new oxy acetylene user Ken. Its unfortunate you get some negative comments like shawnkiller, and others who apparently have no life, except to post some over cautious stuff, perhaps just to prove they are alive? There are many unhappy people running around with negative remarks. Been oxy acetylene user for more than thirty years, and I appreciate your tutorial. All the best and keep the good work coming.

Good vid, Ken. What about flashback arresters? Also, like the water and fire extinguisher.
You're in rather close quarters with a lot of flammable stuff around. Ventilation? Also, I always recommend NEVER look at the flame. Shade # 5, even for just a short moment. Really bad habit to look at the flame without filter eyewear.
Like cracking the tank. Nowadays the company I use puts a plastic sealant around the opening. But it's best not to trust those guys. Crack the tank.
Also, letting down on the pressure afterwards. I rarely do that. Something I'll start doing. Like to hear more about that.

Austin G. ABSOLUTELY WRONG! Turning off the acy. first allows the flame to burn back into the tip which fills with soot and needs to be cleaned much more frequently and hazards a flash back into the torch handle. The industry and professional practice is to turn off oxy. first. Whenever I hear a "pop" when a torch is being shut off I know I'm dealing with someone who doesn't know what they are doing and needs to be fully trained before I'll put them back on a torch.

@@KenTraining That's too high of a withdrawl rate from an MC cylinder. Shouldn't be more than 1/7 of the contents per hour. A size 0 tip set up properly should use between 2-4 SCFH. Which is a little high above the 1/7 rule, but it works for me. If you want to run 10 SCFH of fuel gas, then you need a B tank or larger, especially in cold weather. If you pull gas out too fast, then the acetone vapors can 'water down' your gas, making for a colder flame.

about an hour. they are really only good for small jobs where portability is a needed. people that use them a lot generally have big tanks at home in the shop then the small tanks when they need something portable. of course with carts and such big tanks are portable too but it's much easier to just have a set of small tanks you can throw in a pickup.
also worth noting refilling or exchanging small tanks is far more expensive. as an example a 21 cu. ft. oxygen tank costs me about $45 to exchange but a 55 cu. ft. costs $50. it's $5 more sure but you're also getting nearly 3x the oxygen. basically the bigger the tank the more cost effective it is

KEN T. Your video is chock full of wrong and dangerous information. NOBODY but a novice turns off the acy. first. That "pop' you hear when you do that is the flame burning back into the tip. Which fills it with carbon which means much more frequent tip cleaning and potential for flash back and explosion into the torch handle. All trained torch users know to turn off the ocy first. There are many good videos that show the correct, safe way to use a torch but yours very much isn't one of them. Please take this video down, get properly trained and make a vid with accurate information. You are going to get someone hurt!! Please!!

I'm just a carpenter who does some metal work as needed but I'm really alarmed by a number of things you've put in this vid.
One, acy. thread (like propane and most, if not all flammable gases as far as I know) is usually backward. You should probably know this isfyou are doing a vid on this topic. If you are using an off brand or ancient bottle and regulator set up that has threads that don't match current safety regs, no gas supply house will refill your bottles and it's really dangerous to take a chance on them falling into the hands of someone who isn't familiar with your set up/aware of the danger. Even with different size nuts, someone may be tempted to cobble an adapter together and blow themselves up. Did you think to mention an inspection for any grease/oil on oxy. threads and system and why?
Two I would never consider using a separate wrench rather than a bolted in place handle to turn a tank on/off. The split second(s) it takes a panicked person to find the wrench, fit it in place and turn the valve the right direction may be the time it takes to head off a disaster. I never open the valve of a tank more than just enough to allow free flow. Again, the split second it takes to turn a valve handle several more revolutions than necessary for adequate flow might be the time needed to avert disaster.
Three, the torch user needs to know the type and size of torch handle and tips and use the mfr's. tables to look up the proper acy-oxy pressure for that specific set up, material/thickness being used. I know of no tips that use the 1 to 2 ratio that you are describing. I'm astounded you just shoot from the hip with a general 1 to 2 rule of thumb and advise others to do the same. Just off the top of my head, a Victor size 0 oxy/acy cutting tip uses 30-35 psi of oxy with 3-5 psi of acy but I of course check the mfr's table every time I change tips or use my torch to match the tip size to the thickness and type of material being cut. Not only is it safer, it makes a HUGE WORLD of difference in speed, economy and quality of cut or weld. Properly sizing the tip, gas pressure to the job is the difference between cutting a board with a sharp power saw or a dull hand saw.
Four, Showing novice users that it's ok to randomly turn your oxy up to 100 psi is a bad example as is using a torch or venting gas in an enclosed space.
I'm out of time and there are way too many issues in your vid to address. Acy. bottles should be let set for 24 hours if they've been turned on their side, NEVER, EVER use synthetic gloves instead of insulated leather welding type gloves (or wear any type of synthetic garment) when using a torch, any contact with hot metal will not just burn you, it'll melt the gloves into your skin producing a far worse injury than just a burn. Using a torch in an area that is full of stuff that could catch/sustain a fire is a no-no. What about eye and lung protection? You would solder or perhaps braze, not weld copper tubing and a propane plumbers torch is quite sufficient for sweating a copper pipe joint. The more I think about all the wrong/missing information in your vid, the more strongly I want to ask you to remove it from CZcams and leave proper training on something this dangerous to a knowledgeable professional. I appreciate your desire to make a video but this one is more dangerous than helpful.
To all viewers of this video if he doesn't take it down: there are many, many sources of correct information about how to properly and safely use an oxy-acy set up. The gas bottle vendor, the torch manufacturer, the Department of Transportation and military manuals to name a few. Please get proper training before using one of these setups!

I know your post in nearly 6 months old at this post but I was thinking the same exact thing, I was pulling up videos to set up a list for a new guy at work to watch( to get visual notes with me teaching him other things) and god damn this vid had me alarmed I RECOMMEND NO ONE USE THIS VIDEO....there are so many more accurate and over all better tips and learning videos out there then this one, from the very get go when he wasn't able to be factual and concise I knew something was wrong...

you must be fun at partys... or to work with for that matter
if anything i think this video is too indepth as far as safety this is a youtube video not an osha certified training course.. show peoplequick and to the point (red to red, green to green), 1:2 ratio is a good starting poiint not like you just swing torch valvesto 100% anyway so it gets mixxed to the exact ratio at the torch, acetylene befor oxygen what the flame should look like and a quick example weld
should be a 4-5 minute video to get someone started, although theres good info in here it could of been clearer, cant imagine your video matt itd be a 6 hour segment just to tell you all the reasons not to use any tools, like dont use it indoors seriously? obviously you need ventilation and enough space for extended use but thats beyond the scope of a beginner video, also you missed some points in your comment and got info wrong, 24 hours upright after being on the side is way overkill 15 minutes is minimum and 30 minutes is plenty for any bottle, leaving the oxygen valve partially opened can cause leaks it doesnt usually but the oxygen is at 2200+ psi and has a double lip seal that only works as intended at full on or full off
you didnt mention that you shouldnt use the acetylene all the way to 0psi as the liquid inside that holds/absorbs the acetelyne can come out and damage valves/seals although most people do use it right to empty without issues
and dont rip people apart on their video attempt without making any attempt at your own to actually improve the community rather than just start arguements like this one in it..nothing in this video is gonna kill anyone it may not be perfect but it is better than no video at all or some of the other 30 second videos that dont have any info other than light the torch and melt the metal with it
