Basics of Recording Guitars in Linux

  • Mostly about the signal chain I prefer, and using Ardour.
    NOTE: When I duplicated the first guitar track, I should have disabled the input monitoring from the first track. I didn't notice it, but when I'm recording the second guitar, its signal is actually processed by both tracks. This doesn't affect the outcome, but might be distracting when dialing a tone.

    Amazing tone, dude! Holy sh*t! Please make more videos like this! CZcams needs more content about Ardour and Guitarix.

      Thanks! Feedback like this will definitely have an effect as I kind of have the urge to show what I've learned but I'm also not doing this for anything else than just for fun & to give back for open source community.
      I was originally using GxAmplifier plugin (from Guitarix) in Ardour but I had major issues with it keeping consistent tone across multiple tracks. I was able to reach its developer who confirmed that some guitarix plugins can't handle Ardour very well due to dynamic buffer size changes (if I recall correctly) which is not an issue in Guitarix. GxPlugins is a set of similar plugins by same devs but they work much better in Ardour.

      @@SudoMetalStudio In the past I also used GxAmplifier and didn't like it that much. I didn't know about GxPlugins. Then I saw your video "Metal Guitar Signal Chain Using Free Plugins in Linux". Now I use a Noise Gate, GxTubeScreamer, some distortion plugin, GxBoobTube and an IR loader. And since I'm a bit dumb for compilation, I added the KXStudio repositories to get these additional Guitarix plugins. So thank you very much!

    • @SudoMetalStudio
      @SudoMetalStudio  Před rokem +1

      Go to audio setting and check that you are using jack instead of alsa. I think it was under View or Windows -menu. Something like 'Audio/Midi Preferences' maybe.

    damn bruh im on arch and i cant get guitarix to work cuz of some errors like
    [14:41:01] system init *** mlockall failed:
    [14:41:03] PitchTracker *** error creating realtime thread - tuner not started
    even tho i have the group audio present and my user is added to it
    then i try ardour and i also have issues with jack on there so i use pulseaudio and barely manage to find out how to enable that side pan you have on the left side where you set the audio input just to find out that there are none listed and i cba to look further man

    • @SudoMetalStudio
      @SudoMetalStudio  Před měsícem

      Sounds like your system configuration is somehow messed up. You might want to check if you should be using PipeWire instead of PulseAudio/Jack. In Ardour you should always use ALSA unless you really need low-latency connecticity between Ardour and other applications.
      Check also that you have low-latency kernel, and that realtime permissions are enabled for Jack if you use PA/Jack configuration.

    • @SudoMetalStudio
      @SudoMetalStudio  Před měsícem

      Oh and the side panel is "Editor Mixer". Shift+E or View->Show Editor Mixer.
      I'm pretty sure you are not seeing your audio inputs in Ardour because you configured it to use PulseAudio instead of ALSA or Jack.

    My usb interface shows up and plays system audio via the output but the input from the guitar won’t show up. The device comes up as pnp usb and some shows it as a mic input but no signal comes through. Audacity picks up some hum on the levels but no audio from the strings. Really baffled as I’m new to this

    • @SudoMetalStudio
      @SudoMetalStudio  Před rokem +1

      Launch Carla and you should see all available inputs and outputs of your sound card. If you don't see them, you have probably something wrong in your Jack -setup.

    I didn't see my Scarlett 2i3 in Carla, only in QtJackCtl. Do you have any idea why?

    • @SudoMetalStudio
      @SudoMetalStudio  Před 9 měsíci

      Do you see it in Carla when you have QJackCtl running? Jack itself is kind of a background engine that needs to be running. QJactCtl starts it if it wasn't already but Carla doesn't. In Ubuntu you can use Studio Controls to have it always running on background.

    • @viikkasti
      @viikkasti Před 9 měsíci

      @@SudoMetalStudio Nope, but I can see Carla in QJackCtl (started QJackCtl first). In QJackCtl it would be possible to connect my Scarlett Focusrite to Carla. I will check Studio Controls for some adjustments.
      Kiitos vastauksesta!

      @@SudoMetalStudio Well, your video is of definite value for long time professionals who know their way in, say, mac or windows environment and you just show them where the necessary menus are located in linux. All the concepts in audio routing, dozens of obscure professional terms that you're used throughout the video were neither explained, nor mentioned. Also you came with the ready setup of everything barely saying few words of how and why this is configured as it is. That's the primary reason many people opened this video in the first place. I play guitar and I'm embedded software engineer and yet I'm pretty confused with all the sound machinery involved. So I think many are just looking how to start off with relatively simple setup, step by step instructions, how to wire up single guitar to single channel and record a good sound with it. Maybe throw some plugin with it for demonstration purposes. Which software is involved and why. That's basically what I was expecting from a video titled 'Basics of Recording Guitars in Linux'

    • @SudoMetalStudio
      @SudoMetalStudio  Před rokem +1

      Ok, thanks for the input! And you are right that I'm expecting some knowledge here so "basics" might be simply bad description. It's quite broad subject which is why I'm having different things explained on different videos. I'd recommend watching my tutorials in release order. Maybe I should rename them for consistency... anyway, this was previous one and has even more basics: czcams.com/video/vuk_9W2_ux0/video.html

      @@SudoMetalStudio what I mean is, if you are clicking somewhere, explain what you are doing... if you configure something, tell us what you are configuring... if you decide to do that over this, explain why it should work that way... when you speak, don't speak as if everybody is next to you listening, because sometimes it is not sounded well nor outspoken clearly... your content is VERY important for many people, and therefore, serves as an important source of information.
