  • The First Vision was Joseph Smith’s miraculous experience with God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, as They appeared to him in a grove of trees near his upstate New York home in the spring of 1820.
    The First Vision was the beginning of the modern-day Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ on the earth. A spiritual resurgence was in full force in the early 19th century in western New York, and a young boy, Joseph Smith, was interested in religion but unsure of which church to join. After reading in the Bible, Joseph decided to pray and ask God which church was true.
    In response to Joseph’s prayer, both God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, appeared to Joseph in the grove of trees near his home where he was praying. In Joseph’s own words, “I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other-This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!”
    During the visit, Joseph was told not to join any of the churches and that Christ’s ancient Church would soon be restored. Joseph Smith was a key part of that Restoration process. He became the first President and prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

    It's really weird though... as a criminologist we learn that it's the total opporsite: an account or testimony with little to no variation would be the one that you can't trust simply because it's difficult to sound convincing. Because of that, you "prepare" your lie mentally so you don't sound suspicious. A person will naturally focus on certain aspects of a testimony depending who they are talking to. Some things in the testimony are left out and some are included, but we also almost always remember something wrong.
    It reminds me that often when I share my testimony with others, my wife will say: "you haven't said that before". It's not because I lie, but some things in my life for example I only want to talk about to one person, not face to face, and some times certain parts are not relevant for the message.

    That part of his vision I can relate to because in my teenage years that happened to me. A shadow appeared as I slept and I was frozen. I couldn't move, couldn't think, and couldn't speak. When we go to sales training classes they teach us to focus on the customer and their individual needs. We are taught how to focus our sales presentation to best fit what the customer needs to hear at the time to help them make the purchase decision. We are taught to tell the story that that customer needs at that time in order to close the sale. These different descriptions of the first vision were simply to different audiences, and those audiences needed those particular details more than the other details. The important details are there in most of the descriptions and the differences in those details are mostly minor, although some are fairly critical differences, the message is still the same. Reading the different versions and comparing the details of them should be avoided.

      In all matters of faith, doubt is a normal occurrence, but the most important thing to do is turn to God Himself. We often don't have all the answers to all of our questions. Sometimes the answers are known by others, but we just don't happen to have access to them. If God witnesses of truth to us and reassures us with His Comforter, then we can find it easy to wait for answers we don't have right away. So many times I've seen people get hung up on things that appear to be problematic but end up having explanations that completely make sense. It's not worth it to reject the great things God has given us, particularly when doubt gives us nothing in return.

This was after the death of his brother Alvin. The church says that the event happened well before alvins death. How could you be questioning God's existence after just seeing God the father and God the son? Something to think about. Again no disrespect I love church members and the church but honest question deserve honest pondering, not to listen to a talk by a church leader telling you to not worry about it and forget about it. They thought they knew too! The prophets who taught us for over a hundred years that black people were less valiant in the pre-existence. Now they say... All those prophets were wrong. They all thought they knew by this same method of seeking truth that you are using. So many things they say 'the prophets are people too!' every time there's a wrong teaching that they must sweep under the rug because it's too embarrassing to teach now. Those were prophets and they were wrong. If the method doesn't work for a prophet, it's not a reliable method for truth seeking. Jesus said 'I am the way, the truth....' Not some church! Him! God gave us logic to use it. When people can get us to detach from our logical mind, and obey them as a mediator to God, they can control everything about your life! Jesus said there is 'One God and one mediator... Jesus himself.' They have taken away your mental reasoning capacity by convincing you that they know the only test for truth, and the only truth. Look at all the people Bewitched by this method used by people to get control over them! Jehovah's Witnesses, Scientologists, FLDS, etc etc etc all believe they have found the only truth, all they have found is oppression! They've lost their freedom to go directly to God, everything is filtered through the guy who convinced you he was speaking for God. That's awfully close to how cults work. Isn't it? Why would God give such a flimsy test for truth when all those poor people used the same way of disconnecting from reasoning, and believing truth only comes through another person! What a dangerous path! Charlatans everywhere are looking for people to control, who will believe, not by searching the evidence about what they say, not by searching the evidence, but by a feeling. What if the FDA used this method, rather than solid research and evidences, to determine what is good for you to put in your body? Could they be wrong? Led astray? Why have so many LDS prophets been proven wrong about so many things, by this method? Shifting sands, the doctrines constantly changing, listen to Hinckley on Larry King, teach that caffeine is against the Word of Wisdom. That's just one small thing that they've changed that used to be 'truth.' They change doctrines and then say it was only policy. They change what was taught was unchangeable by Joseph Smith, for example, the temple endowments. Stuff got too creepy for the modern times, so they changed the unchangeable doctrines! Joseph either saw God, or he didn't. 3 of his own accounts say he didn't. If you research the history, read the church's own essays they were forced to reveal to prevent lawsuits for fraud, but they hid them deep in their website, hard to find. Joseph's many accounts of his first vision are finally revealed by the church, when they have denied it, excommunicated people for exposing it, for decades.

"...solid research and evidences," Some of their evidence is research done by the pharmaceuticals themselves or paid for by the same. Let's not start on the meat industry pushing their agenda very successfully into America. Lack of hand-washing by doctors delivering babies was causing maternal deaths due to infection. But many scoffed at the idea that washing hands would prevent the transmission of harmful bacteria to these women. Time has proven the truth. Bacteria unseen to the eyes can kill you. Read your food labels and learn what the ingredients are because the FDA does approve many subtances that have been known to cause harm. I acknowledge that men and women are imperfect everywhere, Prophet or not. God knows all and sent His Son Jesus Christ to save as many souls as possible to make it back to God's amazing presence. After death we all will be judged and resurrected, even the most filthy soul will receive a brand new resurrected body. Hi Robert, thanks for your comment. We're sorry you have felt confused. As the video describes, Joseph Smith published two accounts of the First Vision during his lifetime. The first of these, known today as Joseph Smith-History, was canonized in the Pearl of Great Price and thus became the best known account. The two unpublished accounts, recorded in Joseph Smith’s earliest autobiography and a later journal, were generally forgotten until historians working for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints rediscovered and published them in the 1960s. Since that time, these documents have been discussed repeatedly in Church magazines, in works printed by Church-owned and Church-affiliated presses, and by Latter-day Saint scholars in other venues. The various accounts of the First Vision tell a consistent story, though naturally they differ in emphasis and detail. We hope you'll learn more and continue strengthening your understanding of the First Vision by reading the essay below: www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-topics-essays/first-vision-accounts?lang=eng Take care!

      @@churchofjesuschrist your messaging is so frustrating. You state, "The various accounts of the First Vision tell a consistent story, though naturally they differ in emphasis and detail", but the only consistency logically derived from analyzing the various accounts is 1) Joseph went to the forest, 2) he was visited by someone, 3) that somebody said something.
      The inconsistency living behind these three vague commonalities is 1) Joseph's purpose for going to the forest wasn't the same in each account, 2) the somebody wasn't the same person in each account, 3) those somebodies didn't give him the same message in the various accounts.
      The emphasis and details are too discordant to claim they tell a consistent story. You are misleading the public!

    You can say it all you want church, but for anyone who actually reads all of the accounts together, they are NOT CONSISTENT! You can see Joseph's theology changing over time from numerous sources, which gets reflected in each of his accounts when he gives them (read the three witnesses statement and see how many gods are mentioned. Does this make sense if he saw 2 different gods in 1820?) He believed in one god up until 1835, then 2, then ultimately many gods by the time he published the Book of Abraham. Duh!

      As to why Joseph Smith didn't write down an account of the First Vision until several years later, that's pretty normal. There are a number of highly significant events in my life that I didn't write down right away--particularly because they were especially salient in my memory. Who Joseph Smith told about the vision before recording it can't be known, particularly if they were instructed to keep it in confidence.

What I know is that people are not perfect record keepers, by a long shot. I will tell you this: there are many events in my life, including some of them that are the most important to me, that I did not write down for years, but later did. Perhaps if I had been consistently diligent about journal writing from an early age, I would have recorded all of those significant events right away, but in my own life that's not how it happened. So I'm not surprised at all that Joseph Smith didn't write down some of his experiences right away either. Frankly, if you've written down all of your most important life experiences as soon as they happened, then you're probably in a minority.

At different times, depending on who he is talking to he brings up the details of what will help that specific person the most. Same with the Gospels... Christ lived one life, yet there are discrepancies in chronological and even story details between the books. That is because they are writing for different audiences. While a testimonies elements must be consistent, exact details rarely are, not because people are trying to deceive but for a multitude of reasons such as what they want the audience to focus on, what they are focusing on currently in their own lives, or just because we are imperfect and therefore can misremember.

    This apology overlooks a significant aspect of these variant versions of the First Vision. There are, in fact, six accounts of the First Vision, either written by Joseph Smith himself or written with his approval. The differences among them are significant and can hardly be explained as telling different pieces of a single story at different times. Taken from earliest to latest they show a pattern of experiment and enhancement that is not at all what one would expect from a credible witness recalling an actual event. Every lawyer knows that eyewitness accounts do not become more detailed and specific with the passage of time. But stories get grander in the process of myth-making as they are adjusted to meet the changing needs of the community of faith. Smith's original story has only Jesus. Other versions mention two personages and angels. The 1842 version has God the Father and his Son appearing to Smith. The main part of their message is missing in earliest version. Subsequent accounts speak of some doctrinal errors in Christians denominations known to Smith. In the final version, all Christian denominations are categorically condemned by God, and Smith is commanded to restore the true gospel. All of this reflects the changing uses to which Smith put his initial faith story. As a process of composition, this evolution of the message makes perfect sense. As eyewitness testimony of an actual historical event, it is hopelessly compromised by re-invention and embellishment.

      Good luck to anyone who can attempt to write a book that in hand with the bible leads millions to the truth of Jesus Christ and join a church that in turn helps it's members and millions of other people outside of it's membership. Joseph Smith may be the ultimate philanthropist. Why would millions of people want to share their money with strangers who are passing through hardship? Could there be a possibility that this book could lead millions to the truth of God? The bible has been changed over time through various translations and yet brings many to the truth of God. The Book of Mormon has not passed through but one translation and contains truths purposefully taken from the bible. Joseph Smith and scribes spent less than 70 dedicated days in the work of translating. That is much less time than authors use to write great fiction books. You will only come to know this for yourself as you read the Book of Mormon yourself, and read with the intent to genuinely find the truth. If you read Genesis 3: In the Torah is says in English the Lord God spoke to Adam and Eve. However it does not say that in Hebrew. In Hebrew it says that Jehovah Elohim spoke to them. Who are Jehovah Elohim? Early Christians as do Mormons believe Jesus was Jehovah. In Genesis 1:1 in Hebrew it says that Elohim (which means God of the Gods) crested the heavens and the earth. Jesus said to Mary Magdalene ' I go to your father and my father your God and my God' On the cross Jesus prayed to Father "Eli Eli" which means my God and is short for Elohim. Thus when in the garden it was said to Adam and Eve "man has become one of us knowing good from evil" clearly the "us" is Heavenly Father and Jesus. So Joseph Smith spoke to The Father and Son as they did to Adam and Eve, in a sacred place.

    • @00Fisher00
      @00Fisher00 Před 4 lety

      @@poopyfacehole1426 That is a pretty common misconception, but no, it doesn't, and I'll be happy to tell you why. In Revelation 22:18-19, the apostle John wrote, "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." So when he said, "this book", what book was he talking about? The Bible hadn't been compiled yet. A few hundred years later, scholars created the Bible (tà biblía in Koine Greek, which means, "the books") by assembling what writings they could that were considered to be inspired by God. To anyone who read John's book that we call the Revelation before then, it would be clear that he was referring to his own book that he had been writing at the time: Revelation. John was happy to have more writings from prophets; the last words John wrote himself, in his own "gospel", were these: "And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen." (John 21:25) It's interesting to note that Moses used the same wording about not adding to or taking away from his words back in Deuteronomy, the last of his writings, in Deuteronomy 4:2 and 12:32. If he had meant that no prophets were to ever write God's word again, we would have to reject everything that came afterward, including the rest of the Bible. Clearly he was again referring to his own writings. Even then, the Bible wasn't a single work created by God but rather many individual writings that people compiled centuries after they were written, while the Book of Mormon is a separate compilation. To me, it simply makes sense that God would not suddenly decide that prophets were no longer useful. Particularly when I listen to the words of living prophets, I am very grateful for what God gives us through them. If you'd like to listen to their words for yourself (and I highly recommend this), you can at churchofjesuschrist.org/general-conference .

      The writings of the Bible teach us that all scripture is useful for us, and they mention several times when people did see God. I mentioned one in my other comment to you, but here's another; Exodus 24:9-10 tells us, "Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel: And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness."

    . “I will preach on the plurality of gods. I am going to tell you how God came to be God. We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea, and take away the veil, so that you may see” (King Follett Discourse)
    Joseph Smith ....
    “Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.
    And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them.”
    Isaiah 44:6-7
    I encourage all of you to read Isaiah 44-46 with an open mind and a renewed heart in Christ

We do believe in repentance also through His power, but I'd encourage you to focus on your own repentance and seeking to understand others before telling them to repent.

      Jehovah was speaking that, there is no other God besides him. He's not wrong, are you going to go worship a golden cow? your TV? Nope.
      Matthew 5:48

      That invite came from Christ, WHO attained his Godhood after his Resurrection. He didn't say he was perfect... yet. Just the Father.

    These videos serve two main purposes: 1) to explain the basics to those who are NOT members of the church but trying to figure it out. 2) To help shift the use of the term "Mormons" to "members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." So WHY did President Nelson announce this decree? Why did he call the term a satanic trick? Because those who are "anti-Mormon" have historically used the term "Mormons" to deflect away from the fact this is a Christian church centered on Jesus Christ. However, among church members themselves the term Mormon is still used and always will be because for us it carries with it a rich heritage and deep meaning. When talking to non-members we try to reiterate the full name of the church to focus on Christ's message, not ourselves. The most preferable term for members is in fact Saints.

      Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fully believe in the Atonement of Jesus Christ, and we appreciate that he gave every mortal effort until He declared His mortal life to be "finished". It's clear that His larger work was not the thing that was finished, as he came back to His apostles after His resurrection and charged them with more work. Other prophets and apostles continue to do His work today. God's teachings, such as what is reflected in this video, are not false teachings, and Jesus' words in the Bible indicate that we should accept *all* scripture. I'd be happy to help you understand more.

    • @monocuco818
      @monocuco818 Před 4 lety

      It is finished, meaning the Atonement. Last I checked we are still here on Earth and the work and God's plan is not finished. He still has to fulfill ALL of His promises He made to the world and to the House of Israel. He is still actively trying to bring us back to Him, not just leaving us with a Bible so we can arbitrarily interpret it as the incredibly smart humans we are.

    • @00Fisher00
      @00Fisher00 Před 3 lety

      @@gloriacox9926 I'd say a more admirable stance is to seek God's will and be ready to do it. Jesus spoke the words "It is finished," in John 19:30. "When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost." As I mentioned above, He was referring to His Atoning sacrifice. He clearly wasn't saying that the work of God's servants on Earth was done, because He returned after His resurrection to give the apostles a commission to preach. The New Testament itself was recorded after Jesus actually spoke these words. Some people are hesitant to receive more scripture from God, but others do receive it and are blessed by it. God doesn't expect you or anyone else to believe in the Book of Mormon just because other people say it's good, but if you read it for yourself and ask God about it in sincere prayer, He will testify to you of its truth through the power of the Holy Ghost. I invite you to find out for yourself.

      S Mariscal - The Church does not hold anyone above Jesus Christ, with perhaps exception to the Father (obviously). That goes for Joseph Smith as well. Those who claim otherwise are incorrect. The Church’s name is a great argument to those that make this claim. Jesus Christ is the central figure, and as it pertains to the First Vision (as it has been titled), that too centers entirely on Jesus Christ’s message to Joseph; a message that opened up the dispensation of the fullness of times, a complete restoration of the gospel, and that DOES SAVE those that follow the gospel, repent, are baptized, etc., by applying the blessings and gifts of the Savior’s atonement, and by striving to become as Christ-like in character as is possible, until the end.... a process of becoming and growing in righteousness, following Jesus Christ’s instructions, commandments, and His perfect example.
      There is no need to warn anyone about the Church as it pertains to the Prophet Joseph Smith in comparison to Jesus Christ. Anyone in the Church, including Joseph (if he were here), would find such a notion strange and out of place. Jesus Christ is at the head of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Prophets are mortal men that serve His purposes, nothing more. We don’t worship any prophet. Reverence is not the same as worship.

      No one ever said Joseph Smith saves. Prophets testify of God and Christ. They are sent by God to correct those who have turned away from the truth. Then, usually, those who have turned from the truth claim the prophet to be false and try to discredit him, or stop him from teaching, against their false beliefs.

      Some passages referring to people seeing God are difficult to understand on the surface. 1 Timothy 6:14-16 and Luke 24:39 appear to blatantly contradict each other at first glance. The Bible should have been more deeply studied by joseph and he would have seen that there is no need for new covenants and that anything new is not from God. J.S. Was a story teller and into black magic. He was in no way a christian. He came up with this stuff from his own imagination. We are taught to watch for new developments and flee from it. Mathew 7. Galations says if an angel from heaven comes to you with new revelations, flee from it, its not from me, (God)

    • @00Fisher00
      @00Fisher00 Před 3 lety

      Actually, the apostle John said the opposite in the final book of the Bible: "And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people". (Revelation 14:6) Everything that God gives us is good. Joseph Smith testified powerfully of Jesus Christ, even until he was killed for it. He was a true prophet. While Jesus warned us about false prophets, as recorded in Matthew 7:15-20, and then he told us how we would be able to distinguish between true and false prophets: by their fruits. Happily, we can easily examine the fruits of the prophet Joseph Smith; namely, we can study the Book of Mormon and pray to God to know it is true, and we can participate in the restored Church of Jesus Christ. When we see and know the goodness in these fruits, we know that Joseph Smith truly was called by God to do His work.
