      It's kinda funny. A friend of mine from Japan experienced one of those forgotten classics when he went to Europe for dance competitions.
      He was genuinely surprised by how much good music Japan had produced before he was born that he'd never heard of because never gets played in Japan. The record labels only care about pushing *new* music, because they want to get a return on their new investment, so the classics tend to abandoned.
      >
      You'd think there'd be stations playing the older stuff for the older generations, like in Europe or the US, but that doesn't seem to be very common in Japan. It's weird to me.

      @Dischargedarrow Getback Forgotten? I'm very surprised. Both the visuals and the vocals are very very strong. Some of the tunes are strong too and from what little I've gathered, the lyrics are quite edgy. There's a mystic atmosphere in the product which has to have its origins in some kind of substantial artful vision. In fact, I suspect that this may have some kind of anthropological value. The development, or fate if you will, of the collective Japanese psyche has always been deeply fascinating to me. Pray tell: Is Yoshiko Sai the name of the female on the covers who also the vocalist?

    If I look at the mirror in the pale light

    Has the camellia fallen?
    If so, Then I'll protect you
    Sickness has taken hold of you, and your heart is in shambles
    Do you want to wear a Cuscuta's neck wraps and weep?

    I'll give it to you
    Did you weep when you sobered up?

      @@Calvini2013 Thought I'd lend a hand here at some of the ones that are trickier
      3. At Dusk (though I definitely see the reason for spirits going wild part). Oddly, there's a specific wikipedia article in English about this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%8Cmagatoki . There's a bit about great calamity, but seems like it the first translation for 'the time of dusk when the sky grows dark', since a lot of these ballads in the 70s/80s seem to be about the mystery and spirit of the night or dusk when the night is full of possibility.
      4. To my lover
      5. Has the camellia flowers fallen? (the trickiest part is the かや part at the end, though I actually found an link explaining the meaning of this particular phrase, translated into modern Japanese: hinative.com/ja/questions/11816438 )
      6.Drunkard's Play (or Drama). Apparently Yoidore is analogous to Yopparai, someone that is violently drunk.
      8. When I am 20 years old
      10. Unfulfilled Dreams
      Overall, this is tricky as Yoshiko Sai likes to use older terms, which with many folk/enka singers in the 70s, it happens. As an added note, when I do title translation, I try to look at the source lyrics for the songs. There's some good stuff there, but the style definitely older in style, combining enka-like imagery with folk/70s ballad music. I don't know the circumstances of why she retired later on, largely forgotten by her native land, but this is good.

    I let my 17 yrs old son know her and he immediately asked me to buy her CDs in paper sleeves so I bought 4, except for live and recent ones ー this one, Mikkou, Taiji No Yume and Chou no Sumu Heya. Just could not get that complete box set since the price is skyrocketing. To me, her music is so perfect and solid, I am inclined to listen to much more imperfect music but I still love it. Therefore, I was just ok with Apple Music. But my son insisted that he NEEDS to have them, preferably in vinyls which I could not achieve. Another true pride of Japanese music to which I have been indifferent for decades. My life from now is to repent.

    The kanji, "萬花鏡" (Kaleidoscope) that is the title for this album, has since become considered generally "out-dated!" Now it's become "万華鏡."
    To think that the title of an album has become archaic like that is so cool. If my understanding of the situation is correct, then it all just goes to show how old this awesome album is.

      the first sentence is true; 萬花鏡 is 'kyuujitai', which means it is the old characters, and the new one is the simplified, modern version. However, kyuujitai are from before 1947, and this album was made in 1975, so the new spelling had been the correct one for a few decades. She used the older characters but it was not because that was the correct spelling at the time, it is just for artistic reasons. Just thought it might be helpful to clarify :)

    • @beetheimmortal
      @beetheimmortal Před 11 měsíci +6

      Let's be honest, that's how every album should be mixed. I hate the western trend of making the instruments completely silent so the soloist "star" is the only thing you can hear. Just make an a capella album and be done with it. Why pay the instruments' players at that point? Older engineers understood that, so most older albums, and especially albums not from the US sound correct, after these hyper-stars showed up though, that changed. Kind of like the loudness wars.

    • @DBumple
      @DBumple Před 7 měsíci +2

      @@beetheimmortalman I totally agree with this. The reason I love artists like Floyd and Masayoshi Takanaka are because they actually make music. Y'know, combining vocals with the backing track to form a single song. Almost using the singers voices as instruments in the song. Music is just so meaningful when done in that way.
