I attended a seminar in 1975 changed my life in more ways than playing guitar
I was a returning Vietnam vet
HR was one of the most intelligent person I have ever met
I have since met some of his kids and attended his daughters wedding here in North Bend Oregon
What a musical family
Thank you Howard for saving my life 😉👍 and helping me to be a better guitar player
RIP
I attended some of his 'seminars' the mid-70's and helped out a bit at GIT when it started. Howard taught me to order my beers two at a time, so that I'd never run out. Five years later I ended up in AA. Still - he was a great player, and cool cat.
I know everyone talking about Joe Pass, Pat Metheny BUT Howard is my man next to Wes of course
He is up or beyond whoever any could name in my book.
My love of jazz guitar playing started after being blowned away listening to his phrasing in H.R is a dirty guitar player . A musical legacy who was incredably influential.
Indeed, Howard was right-handed... but what magic he created with when both hands touched the guitar. Howard was one of my best friends. When we interned his cremains, his kind family blessed me with a portion of his ashes that are now in a sealed package residing within my 1976 Gibson Howard Roberts Custom that he would play when at my house... usually to show me how to do something properly or with better technique... always the consummate teacher. I miss him. Thank you for these uploads.
@Evan HodgeIndeed.
Steven that story is literally incredible? Howard is my All time favourite, him and Joe Pass. Those ashes are a magical fetish. What a GREAT story and what a lucky man. Thanks for sharing this story.
Howard passing at such a relatively young age is a huge loss to all mankind and especially music lovers.......hearing his candid interactions on some of these posts just shows what a kind and gentle soul he was.....he was filled with music in his whole fiber....I dug him in '62 when i was 16 when i came across 2 hours of continuous radio play back in New York...lucky day for me for sure....been a big fan ever since......we love you HR.
Wow, I had not heard this before. This is great. Howard Roberts is right up there with the very greatest jazz guitarists of all time.
Howard was great, been a big fan since the early 60s. Though may not received the credit he deserved, he did make a very good living...probably more than the great players mentioned. I met him once and talked to him briefly...seemed like a great guy. A helluva player for sure....
He could pick individual notes w/o bending and still make the line sound bluesy. He did ben a little too. Smooth and inventive.
Insane playing! Thanks!
Mind boggling
Most tasteful and melodically connected piano solo in many versions I know of this song.
Did you notice Howard playing piano voiced chords during the piano solo? Sounds like three hands are at work. At a seminar I attended in 1978 he demonstrated how to voice the guitar like piano, strings, brass etc. and how it was significant in arrainging. Talk about a one man band.
Howard is smokin hot here,,,,thanks for putting this up on You Tube
Hi Steven,
I studied with Howard also,
but didn't know his family except
for talking to Patty over the phone.
He had a big influence on my playing also.
Great teacher as you say.
Very cool : )
@Mickt6 Yes, Howard is right handed, indeed, and I hadn't noticed the detail of the guitar. Maybe it was just for that photoshoot. Anyway, the picture I put there doesn't belong to the album I uploaded; I uploaded a variety of different album covers or pictures.
Thanks for your comment.
From the LP "The Real Howard Roberts", Concord Jazz, 1977 not from the LP pictured.
I just received a copy of his Guitar Compendium book vol 1. HR is such a bad mofo it’s ridiculous!
cool : )
Interesting cover as it shows a left handed guitar? Must be something to do with reverse printing of some type maybe? Great player, one of my favorites
Thanks for the uploading just cant get enough of HR
Notice an error on the album picture HR was right handed and the guitar if or a left handed did you notice??
good j,,b,,
@patrickdaniels95 I've talked about this before, and I think we had come to the conclusion that it was possible (not to say highly probable).
Thanks!
Boldstrummer... check out HR's son, Jay Roberts at his Roberts Music Institute to learn about the tribute DVD and concert project. I was in Washington state to visit Jay and do an interview for the film. Jay's school is "Top Notch" all the way. CZcams doesn't allow hyperlinks, but go to robertsmusicinstitute-dot-com
@flemita90 is it possible that this image is mirrored?
I have been begging former students of HR to come forth and post lessons, be they written, audio or video similar to the many lessons lovingly posted on the Ted Greene site, Can you help us with this? thank you cliff in tokyo
Cliff Works one of the most incredible things I learned from Howard was sonic shapes
I have shared it to many guitar players they all go WOW thanks Howard 😉
amazing talent never received the credit of Joe Pass. Wes Montgomery. Kenny B. nor did Johnny Smith for that matter and I'm just a block head metal guy with pointy Guitars ?
No doubt about it. You are right. Howard was quite a master. Johnny Smith was amazing as well.....quite a long finger stretch! I also love Herb Ellis. Herb had very tasty licks.....so soulful in my opinion.
The guys you named are among my favorites, as are Howard Roberts and George Benson. Roberts' reputation among guitar players is very good. He was doing some creative, unorthodox things on those 60's albums.
freakin pointy guitars are hilarious!
even more so when when they are wacky colors.
