I think the "correct" one is sweet, but I absolutely adore the "wrong" one, btw compositons after adding all layers seem to be quite similar tbh (both canvases at the end are filled with many objects and are still relatively balanced, titles and embellishments work towards a composition too). It's very interesting to learn from your thought processes, thank you a lot!

As a fellow crafter who loves watching your videos. This was a great video. You weren't saying that one art is wrong vs right. You were giving technique tips. If someone doesn't watch the entire video, they wont get it!! I love bright colors and love the bright one (lol) but your tips were spot on!

You have inspired me to just keep trying, Marta. I am starting to notice my mistakes now, and more times now I tend to get results I'm happy with, but other times, I still feel I am doing it all wrong. But each time I get a piece I love and know is good it pushes me on to do more. You just have to let yourself be "bad" until it clicks! That's what happened for me... One day it just starts to make sense. I would love more videos where you explain your thought process like this. It took me a while just to understand the "flicking" of the brush as I have seen in tons of your videos. Thank you Marta, and for never really saying it is wrong or "bad". This is why you are so amazing at teaching 💜

Okay, I'm going to ignore the angry rant (Old Hag) and say what I took away from this video. I struggle with mixed media. This was informative for me because I saw that flow and proportion are important. I saw that choice of products is important because of how they interact with each other. I saw that completely covering a canvas is not necessary, it is about how the eye moves across it. I saw that color is a personal choice, but layering too many colors muddies the outcome. I saw that I do not have to copy Marta's style, but I can use the process and design points in whatever products or colors I choose. Did I get it right?? Step back and watch the video keeping in mind what you can learn from it. I have never heard Marta say you have to do it a particular way, she always says it's your choice. Thank you for trying to teach us techniques and processes!

I think it could better be phrased as this is not my style rather than saying this is right and this is wrong because art is self expression however it turns out. What one dislikes another may love. I dont like it when artists and artisans say something is done the wrong way and get really turned off when people set themselves up as experts and say you must do it this way or that way and even issue bogus certifications. Who are they to say how it must be done??? The thing is craftsmanship and creative methods have differed from village to village through the ages. It doesnt make one method right and every other method wrong, just different.
Now we are a global village chatting to our neighbours across the seas instead of over the back fence shouldnt stop that. Experimentation must continue or we will stagnate, churning out copies of copies for evermore. So please, dont say wrong, just say not my style and encourage artistic expression instead of stiffling it.

Perhaps some people are easily drawn to anger. I would perhaps not have chosen this title, but with many other artists' choice of saying their video is for beginners, I perceive it as Marta being mindful of the needs of beginners. I am only addressing the last two words in the title here. If you see a title that you do not like simply click on unlike or do not view the video. That is totally up to you. When I see the words "for beginners" I think of it as a review for what I already know.
In addition, I just plain like to watch Marta's tutorials. I consider her to be very brave. It has been awesome to see how her confidence has grown. I have viewed all her video including the very first one where she questioned making a video at all. The comments here sound to me like a simple "judgment call" by numerous individuals. Expressing one's opinion is fine, but using capital letters as you did is totally inappropriate. I always come away from Marta's videos with a tidbit that helps me in my art.

This was really helpful because you showed us how you think when you’re putting pieces together and then on the “don’t” side, you explained why it’s not good to put it where you put it.
I hope that makes sense!!!! But yes, as someone who has been interested but intimidated to try mixed media, it was very helpful!
I also wanted to tell you that when you were putting the cassette tape on it, I was thinking, what on Earth is she doing???? But then when you painted everything white with the gesso and then you only saw texture, not cassette tape, it was really beautiful. I couldn’t believe how nicely it blended in - I really thought you had lost your mind, lol!!!! I’m still so surprised that it blended so nicely! So yes, please do more like this so we can see how you see things. Also, when you showed how yours flowed and the other one was heavy in one spot, that helped me have the light bulb go on to understand. Thank you again for all you do and for sharing!!!! 💜💕💜

There arent really any don'ts when it comes to art. If you like the "dont" part I suggest watching some Tom Holtz videos. He does a lot of that style and will not tell you NOT to do something because thats how art works. The only time he tells you not to do something is when it will ruin your products.

This helped me to see compositions better for sure. I think I have a hard time not seeing the composition right. I see the color of the objects I put down on the canvas and can't see how they all come together after you paint. I need to paint the objects all white then add them :) I believe you see just the objects shape. That is something I truly need to work on. TFS it was very interesting and helpful.

Marta, was very forward in expressing that she did not like the word "mistake". She also said, "It is not a mistake." She gave an example of how she personally sees things in here commenting about "appeal to the eye" and making texture. She expresses clearly that the video represents her opinion. Marta expresses in many (maybe all) or her videos that an artist does what they want to in their art.
I had decided to make my grand kids things (i.e., a Christmas gift) that can be hung on their bedroom wall. I can now purchase your metal pieces from your online store. I have some small metal gears in gold and silver tones. Your pieces will add so much to a masculine creation. I may make one for my brother also. I had thought of making a mask for one of my grandsons, but I found out that he is afraid of masks. Anyway, thanks for helping me to decide what to make for my grandsons for Christmas. I decided to make things so I will spend less money this year.
I laughed out loud when you mentioned the one piece looking like a nose. How hysterical was that? Marta, thanks for explaining all of your decision making in the video. I think seeing things as you have done one can easily determine what (s)he likes best. I think I will not put white gesso on everything. I would leave some of the original metal showing. I realize that you like putting an entire layer of gesso and that is your artistic decision.

Very instructive video Marta .I struggle with composition and learnt a lot from this. More so I think because I was able to make a direct comparison between the two and get an idea of layering and that all space doesn’t have to be filled in. To the angry critic I would suggest she really listen to what you say and in my opinion it’s not what she says. I heard you say art is subjective, there is no right or wrong. etc etc . In ALL your videos you send these messages. You were doing a comparison between how would usually do a project and another one using techniques ,colours placement of elements etc ,that you wouldn’t normally do.Many times you stressed that you weren’t saying this is right or do it this way because the other way is wrong. Don’t let her bother you Marta, she sounds a very angry person and you explained yourself calmly and intelligently and with no screaming! We all love you and your family and I think the number of subscribers you have attest to that. Love from West Oz 🩋💖đŸŒč

It was very brave of you to tackle such a sensitive topic in art. I think the phrases you were looking for are ones I learned in art class: More successful versus Less successful. Obviously anyone can do whatever they want, but what you are saying is that people may not get as successful a piece as they were hoping for when they started out. Even a ‘random’ approach can be more or less successful depending on the methods applied, and the anticipated final product. For the people who work so hard on a piece to only end up saying ‘It’s not quite what I was aiming for’, your suggestions regarding color, pattern, flow, and balance could help them be happier with their own end result.

I love this tutorial, Marta. I don't mean to try and explain what you were saying but rather this is my opinion. Neither canvas is "right" or "wrong", "good" or "bad", "pretty" or ugly", "art" or "not art". Art is what the artist makes. The point I took away from this tutorial is that it takes practice, patience and trying something maybe not so traditional so that you can develop your own taste. Many will find the "wrong" canvas to be right in their style and see nothing wrong with it. Many will feel the "good" canvas is perfect. It is very personal in terms of what speaks to us. Personally, the thing that I struggle with is composition. I use to place elements all around the canvas, not touching each other and very random in choice of elements. That maybe okay for some people but for me I just felt it wasn't right but at first I didn't know what was wrong. I kept at it and in the end I feel like what speaks to me is tightly grouped elements, elements that touch each other or layer on each other, elements that have something to do with the composition that I am making, even if that relationship is only apparent to me! For instance, I was doing a piece with a picture of my daughter and I was layering elements and I added a little brass charm of a cat. Anyone looking at the piece might wonder why this random cat is in the mix. Well, I was looking for elements that reflected my daughter's loves, interests and life. Her greatest treasures are her cat and her stuffed cat. No one else looking at the canvas would know that. I also feel like a little education in colour is a good idea. Learning what are primary colours, harmonious, complimentary colours and opposites. Even basic understanding helps to keep from mixing colours that just don't look good together or colours that when mixed just make mud.
Thank you so much for doing this and I think that breaking down the different elements such as composition, colour theory, layering, etc is a great way for beginners to learn. It was funny when you said your Lucas was in the kitchen and right then you could hear him bang a pot when you couldn't hear him before. I think your Lucas has a sense of humor!! And of course, lovely babushka Hannah. She is going to be a great artist some day.

I think it's very very hard to something bad unless you are REALLY tossing in the towel. Especially when you are an amazing artist. Glad im not the only one covering up mistskes! A well placed bit of painted junk can hide a multitude of "mistakes". In my professional life away from art, I encourage a project report to include what didnt work because others can learn as much from that as from what worked. Id like to see more videos on you tube of people making "mistakes" and fixing them in the video rather than just the perfect practiced bits cobbled together. It would certainly help beginners not to lose confidence and give up when theirs doesnt turn out as well as the one in the video, and make all of us feel more confident in having a go.

It was really interesting to see your thought process with the composition, Marta. I usually make decisions on composition based on what feels right, which works okay, but I'm trying to make it less of a guessing game. Your video is helpful!

What an interesting video, seeing the two pieces its like bringing one into focus. The others beauty is lost by lack of balance often due to us trying to fill the canvas with to many elements.
Mixed media can be a mystery you have helped solve the problems in a fun way. Thank you as always❀❀❀

I'm one of those still learning and doing it "the wrong" way. Sure it looks good to me compared to some things things I've made. But seeing this comparison, I learned a lot when I watched it yesterday. Last week, I tried to make a. Art journal collage after watching one of your videos, using what I had in my stash. But after watching this video, I can see where I can make approvements. Loved this type of tutorial. Yes, please do more!!!

I found this really helpful and think more videos like this would be great! My biggest struggle is composition which is frustrating since its pretty much the first step and nothing can progress until it's done. I think it was really sweet how much you were clarifying that every artist has different tastes and the "bad" one wasn't necessarily bad but there could be little things that can make everything come together a bit nicer. Hopefully not too many people need you to say it that many times to understand what you were trying to achieve!

Well technically it's art so there is no wrong.
But I guess one has a flow that's more pleasurable to our human senses than the other.
But the mere creation of both of them is beautiful.

This has been very helpful and interesting. Unlike some I don’t love the one on the right where you did things you would not normally and which you don’t think work visually. I totally agree. I don’t think it works either. The one on the left is beautiful and ‘flows’ in both form and colour. Thank you xx

great video, Marta. Thank you for explaining the difference as you saw it. You did say that, many times and even said "not necessarily the wrong way, but the way I wouldn't do it myself". Everyone's art is beautiful because they enjoyed the process and it reflects them, you also said that near the beginning of the video. I love that you explained WHY you prefer one over the other. I just happen to agree with your assessment.
