  • This video essay analyzes Cillian Murphy's performance as J Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer (Universal Pictures). Biographical performances can often feel like impressions but Cillian Murphy masterfully uses his physicality, eye contact, facial expressions and hand gestures to let us under the skin of J Robert Oppenheimer.

Another detail that I love about Cillian’s performance is during the Lewis Strauss black-and-white scenes. His behavior and body language appears even more cold and distant, emphasizing the fact that this is not from his perspective but from the perspective of Strauss. It’s just incredible.

@@jenlindley7780 Exactly. Using terms like “lowly shoe salesman”, it really shows how Oppenheimer has contempt for Strauss, or at least how Strauss views Oppenheimer. Strauss had a big ego as well, so it makes the audience question whether Oppenheimer was really that arrogant or if that was just how Strauss viewed him. I love how the color scenes (Fission) work to humanize Oppenheimer, while the black-and-white scenes (Fusion) work to portray Oppenheimer as smug and contemptuous. Cillian’s acting in both the color and black-and-white scenes is the thing that pulls it all together. I don’t think I can praise this film enough

i truly believe that Cillian is the greatest actor that has ever lived. He doesn’t even have to talk so we know what’s going on, truly mindblowing. And the fact that he only takes on roles that he doesn’t know how to do only adds up to the enormity of his capabilities, a truly talented artist. But not only is he this amazing performer, he’s also the most humble, down-to-earth, normal guy who seems so goddamn uncomfortable at big events that you almost feel the urge to just grab him by the hand and take him out of there. When you watch him you get the feeling he’s your introverted sympathetic next door neighbour that by some weird occasion got thrown into Hollywood without any interest in all the fuzz that comes with it. I desperately hope he keeps getting the recognition he deserves and i wish him and his family only the best.

The part where you mention eye contact is very spot on. I watched the movie a second time recently and there was this scene when Oppenheimer meets Ernest Lawrance. And I noticed that there was something different about Cillian's body language. I couldn't make it out at the time but now I realized it was the eye contact. Cillian stares at Lawrance longer than he does with others because he admires him and he feels excited to be working alongside him. It's such a minute yet enormous change in acting and it makes the scene beautiful. Cillian deserves all the praise.

I hope he wins the Oscar for best actor. His performance is incredible as Robert Oppenheimer, he perfected his way of standing with his hands on his hips, he lost several pounds to look more like Oppenheimer, to say the least his performance is truly memorable, because I am sure it will remain in the consciousness of the audience. His acting shows how great a subtle performance can express so much only with his eyes, and the expressions of his face; in particular the scene where he is giving the speech to the audience after the bombs were detonated, his eyes seemed to be about to burst into tears, filled with guilt and anxiety but he would only show a speech of victory and success to the people in front of him. The internal battles of the demons he had in his mind. I am very happy that he already got many awards for his performance, because he deserves every single one of them.

With some actors, it's very easy to see their other performances in a certain role but with Oppenheimer, it's very hard to tie any of Cillian's other roles to this.

Seeing this video gave me new respect for Mr. Murphy.
Showing the characters path from the beginning; with his mannerisms and succinct and calculated performance, it is brilliant to say the least.
When I was a young man studying acting, I did a class scene. When it was over the teacher asked me..” what was my left door doing throughout..” I got unset he was only looking at my foot.
But Mr. Murphy’s performance drove home to me the subtleties capable in a performance that while quiet and could be missed, scream out at us. And we understand the humanity and understanding and pain of this man.
Thank you for putting this together. It is a master class of acting.

But we got home & I made him watch it with me, before the Oscars.I could easily watch it again, because the subject matter is so scary real. I was a kid when the Cuban missile crisis was happening& I was scared to death that the world was going to blow up. My dad started filling an old army box with food and a few supplies. He tried to really downplay what he was doing but I watched Walter Cronkite news & I sort of understood but the movie explained a bit more. It still was complicated. And I was really scared. Now if any group of people even thinks about blowing up the world, well I’m 74 & I don’t care as much. But we can use all that energy for tons of good things. They’re working at it slowly. But Cillian Murphy is an amazing actor. I watched The Peaky Blinders & he owned that role. He’s one of the best new actors to come along in years. He deserved his two Oscars. He has a great calmness & he almost whispers some of the most important moments. He’s a thrill to watch.

This movie was worth the rewatch for the IMAX re-release. Three hours flew by in a masterclass of acting brilliance mixed with awe-inspiring direction 🤌🏽

Watching Oppenheimer, I never saw Thomas Shelby in one scene. Peaky could have EASILY typecast him to that role, but it DIDN'T. He brought Oppenheimer back to life triumphantly. Bravo!!

Good analysis. You adeptly explained the nuances of the character, particularly the subtle gesture of spiraling fingers.

Murphy did a great haunted performance in Dunkirk before Oppenheimer. So seeing that probably made Nolan realize this role was perfect to finally allow Murphy to take a lead role for him.

I usually don’t care about the Oscars at all. But given both the technical and artistic merits of Oppenheimer, I really hope that it sweeps all the categories, as everything it is nominated for is well deserved.

I love your videos so much! When one appears in my « subscriptions » tab I save it for a nice quiet moment, usually late at night and I’ve never been disappointed. This one is no exception, brought me right back to when I was watching the movie a few weeks back and feeling the same things as you, all the while not being able to express them as well as you do.
Cheers and keep up the good work!
