Hairy windward mark rounding

  • Three boats side by side approach windward mark on port, a starboard boat on the layline causes mayhem as the first port boat can't avoid the starboard boat due to the two port boats next to him. A lot of yelling...microphone set too hot. Horizon True camera mount with VIO HD camera and Sennheiser wireless mics.

    Great video ! Makes me feel like I'm right in the middle of the action. Those scurvy seadogs really put the squeeze on you all. Protest.

    "worked it out fine?" What was the red foul flag for if it was fine?

  • @bqeberle
    @bqeberle Před 11 lety +2

    Not necessarily - the starboard boat has all the rights, but the boat with the camera can be exonerated if they hailed 'room to tack' if they wished to lee bow the boat on starboard. Since the SB is technically an obstruction, rule 19 comes into play and the PB can hail for room to tack in order to avoid. Since there appears to be no foul, even though the PB doesn't hail 'room to tack', there was no collision....just a tight rounding. So...no foul. The boats worked it out fine.

      I'm confused. At 0:27 the boat 441 tacked (both camera boat and 441 were on port tack) and became the windward boat, so it should give way to the leeward (camera) boat, which by that time overlapped boat 441. What am I missing????

      @@bessarion1771 Hi there, these sailors you see here are true amateurs. They don't know what they are doing. If you want to learn bring up the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS). The story starts at 0:29 when camera boat (CB) and 441 are on port tack. CB is not paying attention to what comes in on layline on starboard tack, which is quite embarrassing. The helmsman is not paying attention and does not keep an attentive lookout. This means CB is not using Rule 20 (R20) according to which she should hail "Room to tack". Instead you see desperate screaming and fear. Very uncool, honestly. 441 luckily responds to that caveman screaming, and tacks away followed by CB. 0:38 "We have a boat under us"... What the fuck does that mean?? CB needs to learn the rules. That means nothing. In short team Horizontrue (CB) needs to learn R20. A starboard boat is NOT causing mayheim. CB is causing mayheim because they do not duck the starboard boat or hail "room to tack".

      @@MrGentlebutfirm I started to review the footage and only then I realized there was ANOTHER boat to starboard - you can only see it's bow for a split second at 0:26 at the extreme right of screen. LOL. Now I see what happened - the skipper was so worried about 441 he (and everybody else) missed the boat to starboard. They were lucky 441 realized what was going on and tacked away to give them room. thanks!

      @@MrGentlebutfirm The reason they were going for the flag was they felt 441 squeezed them, but that would not fly because they did not call for room to tack. Yep, it would not fly. CB definitely in the wrong here.

      @@bessarion1771 You got it! CB just has no knowledge of R20. It is so weird that people just don't put in the work to learn the rules. I know them by heart and call out rule numbers while racing. It does work fairly well to scare away people with bad rule knowledge.

  • @RobertLangDirect

    The boat with the camera could have avoided the boat coming in from their starboard, by going behind it. They had an obligation to allow the starboard boat to pass, they cannot claim they could not move because they wedged themselves into a bad position.

    • @geebee3d
      @geebee3d Před 6 lety

      Robert Lang.... right. They couldn’t tack, but they could have ducked behind the stbd boat.

    • @scomo532
      @scomo532 Před 3 lety +2

      Had they done that, they would have been windward to that boat as well and could have covered it when they popped their kite.

    • @Papersheepp
      @Papersheepp Před 3 lety +2

      They have no obligation to duck. They can legally call for room to tack to the boats to windward, they just need to give them enough time to respond, which would be at question here.

    • @spelunkerd
      @spelunkerd Před rokem +1

      @@Papersheepp Although the video is 10 years old, the newer rule 18.3 now limits how they tack in front of a boat that is on the starboard layline since entering the 3 boat zone. Even if they complete the tack in time to avoid rule 13, if they push the starboard boat above close hauled, it's a foul. Assuming it was possible to duck, by avoiding the traffic jam they would have been rewarded by clean air, more options, and less chance of an 18.3 violation. Or, if they had room to delay the tack, allowing the starboard boat an inside line to the mark, they still would do better with clean air. For portside windward roundings this new rule reduces congestion.

      You would have lost any protest, you where the give way vessel, and as such, you should have bear away to go behind the boat coming on starboard tack. Also while I am at it, you need to learn to trim sails... you see those folds at 2:36 in the main? halyard way to tight...

      @@spelunkerd interesting, but 18.3 applies at 0:26. unless the later situation is ruled to be a result of the early tack to starboard, and assuming the tack was within the marker "zone."
