If you don't read all the time and write everyday with discipline, don't plan on getting anywhere. Same goes for acting, directing, dancing, painting, singing,
anything that keeps you in flow with your true self.
Even if you don't get published,
    because many don't, instead,
give readings at the library, at meetups, on-line, so people hear you, as you will resonate with someone.
Even if you get published, you'll more than likely not have many buy your book, especially nowadays.
But, main thing is, you've freed your heart and spirit.

Funny how nobody remembers the leading story “Half-Skinned Steer” these days, everyone remembers the closing story “Brokeback Mountain”

I was never a reader growing up. I never learned to read until I was in 3rd grade and had to take special classes to learn since I was an ADHD kid. But I did....I hate reading stories and am more of a technical manual reader than anything... but one day... When I got my hands on this book it was the first time written word spoke to me more than a movie could, it gave me such intense anxiety and excitement. I had to put it down and felt such trepidation wanting to pick it back up and continue since I had a feeling I knew what was going to happen next and I knew I wasent going to like it. I finally felt what well written books should feel like to read.. it was so real. So I give Annie credit for breaking my book cherry. Broke Back Mountain in this book is entirely different than the movie. Maybe because it was the last story but WOW, reading anxiety like I never felt before. Its funny how a story that society would reject was actually very intriguing, it felt risky to read like I wasent supposed or allowed to, but damn it was a great, gut wrenching story!

Half-Skinned Steer is an unforgettable story. The best from the collection and one of the best short-stories I've ever read.

She seems a lot less prickly back then. I wish there was a way to contact her. I have a very specific question about something in one of her stories (not Brokeback) and it makes me sad to know I'll never know the answer.

Yeah, I think the response to Brokeback really soured her towards fan interactions. What’s your question?

The expression 'swinging a cat' refers to the multi-tasseled "cat-o-nine-tails" whip used to punish sailors . It is a common fallacy that it means to grasp a dead cat by the tail and helicopter it around ones head in an inadequate inside space . I would have expected this author to be better informed , given the hero worship
