  • WHAT IS PDT ?
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an in-office treatment that incorporates special topicals, referred to as photosensitizing agents, along with LED light to kill precancerous lesions (actinic keratoses). This medication works after it has been activated or “turned on” by certain kinds of light.
PDT acts by eliminating sun damaged and precancerous cells as well as shrinking sebaceous glands damaged by the sun.
✍🏻 Most treatments are covered by insurance.
✍🏻 Incubation period may be adjusted based on patient, area being treated etc.
✍🏻 Downtime may vary based on patient, degree of damage, and area being treated.
    ✍🏻 Non-invasive treatment
✍🏻 PDT can permanently remove precancerous skin lesions and non-melanoma skin cancers.
With 1 or 2 in-office treatments, LEVULAN® KERASTICK® + BLU-U® provides up to 100% clearance of minimally to moderately thick actinic keratosis (AK) sunspots.
LEVULAN® KERASTICK® is a prescription medicine used on the skin with blue light treatment (BLU-U® Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy or PDT) for the treatment of minimally to moderately thick actinic keratoses (AKs) of the face, scalp, or arms.
PDT is most commonly used to treat precancerous skin conditions such as actinic keratosis, as well as basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas.
PDT is not suitable for deep basal cell cancers or squamous cell skin cancers. This is because the light cannot go deeply enough into the skin.
    Photosensitivity reactions:
The most common side effect of PDT is sensitivity to bright lights and sunlight.
These reactions caused by PDT light can show up on the skin where the drug is applied. They usually involve redness and a tingling or burning sensation.
For a period of time after treatment, you'll need to be careful to not expose treated areas of your face and scalp to light.
    * Stay out of strong, direct light.
    * Stay indoors as much as possible.
    * Wear protective clothing and wide-brimmed hats to avoid sunlight when outdoors.
    * Avoid beaches, snow, light colored concrete, or other surfaces where strong light may be reflected.
    * Sunscreens will not protect the skin from photosensitivity reactions.
