They went from having soundbites of Hitler in a CoD game to almost completely denying that Germany was a fascist regime during the WWII era in just a few short years. Really shows how quickly the culture has changed to where it is now insensitive to even show the Nazis in a historical scope. Well, to the video gaming industry anyway. The new Sniper Elite game finally added swastikas though, which was honestly quite refreshing. Not saying I love the symbol, but it is synonymous with the aggression that started World War Two. To exclude it is assinine.
Shit, there even trying to rewrite recent history. In cod modern warfare the cutscene claims the highway of death was russia's doing.

Loved the detail that the Japanese announcer refers to the Americans as savages. Really shows that developers really did do a small thing called research back then.

The vibe and atmosphere of this game was something else. Dark and gritty. Grounded and raw. It wasn't just a game. It was an experience. Like watching an amazing movie or reading a great book.

In my opinion the best games immerse you with their details. It should feel like I’m taking part in a movie or a book, I want to feel a part of this. Back when developers had no problem doing that.

The song is an Old Prussian marching song. Extremely popular, and a great historic piece. Was around before Germany was united and was used up to WW2. The German people were very proud of their Prussian heritage.

I always remember playing war as the Soviets and feeling a rush to just keep fighting when the theme started in game and the "URA" spurred on some adrenaline
War gamemode was lit, the momentum sounds really got you pumped

Dude, the game was heavily censored in germany back then. The gaming magazines even had to edit out all the swastikas before releasing their reviews. The same happened years later with Wolfenstein! In the german version of New order & New colossus, not a single time are the words "Nazi", "Germany", "Führer" etc. even mentioned. And in the second part, Hitler is just called the "Kanzler" and they even removed his mustache!
So yeah, states do as much to censor games than the companys do by themselves

To this day, bar some very specific cases, the Wehrmacht and Soviet announcers are still to this day my favourite. Wehrmacht dude is savage and so enthusiastic, while Reznov is just the best. Plus I love it playing Der Koingsgraschmartch (I think that how it is spelt) and the Soviet Anthem.

So the song is an old Prussian marching song. It’s very popular and is a pretty cool historical piece. The Germans actually used it in many military parades.

There's something so eerie about these sounds. Fits the WaW theme perfectly, but hearing the cheerful Germany victory theme after seeing people explode, gibbed, and overall torn apart is really eerie, same thing for the marching sounds.
And also with the music and the Hitler speech, after all the killing, dismemberent and sorrow, sounds so inhumane and out of this world.

Newer cod emphasizes on memorable cutscenes, WaW emphasizes on memorable journey.
That's why hunting Amsel is a lot more trauma-inducing than the Concentration camp scene in Cod WW2.

Ive replayed waw god knows how many times. And it is a game that always amazes me, you always find a design choice, detail, just anything that shows this game was passionately worked on.
The artwork, soundtrack, visuals, the aesthetic, the gameplay, everything I expect out of the final two title cards explaining WW2 was as it is, the most destructive conflict that had ever grazed the earth and it’s wounds still hold marks on us today.

I think the European front "War" sounds are so underrated.
It's the same lady's vocalization as the title to the game, and it's so haunting.
It gives off the vibe of a bombed out battlefield littered with corpses being picked at by birds.
seeing the helmets with the dog tags and garands brought the main menu theme back to me. Great game for its time.
