Forrest asking if he's smart breaks me. It's our proof that he's self aware of his condition and has just chosen to live strongly and bravely in spite of it.
Yup. It is one thing to have a problem and be blissfully unaware of how it makes things hard for you. It is something else to understand that you have that problem and there is nothing you can do but struggle against it. We have seen him for a couple of hours just doing his damned best at everything he came across, and he knew. He knew, probably for a long time.
Me too. With so many sad moments, that way he asks is just heartbreaking. Like you said, he realizes something isn’t right with him. He has such a way of just dealing with things, but deep down he knew the whole time.
That part always gets me too. He is so scared his son would have to go through what he went through but is relieved to learn he is "okay" and he did him no harm.
He also said it to Jenny when he asked her to marry him.

Lt Dan sticking up for Forrest during New Years was always my favorite part

The whole movie he ignores the comments, so we're lead to believe that he doesn't realize he's different, but that scene reveals that he's been aware the entire time. Oof! Right in the feels.
Very reminiscent of Flowers for Algernon - which is an incredible read, by the way. Depression is something people commonly tend to overlook with mental disabilities, but many cognitive deficits of this magnitude come with some sort of awareness about how intellectually inadequate those folks are. This goes well beyond that threshold too, some of us are constantly reminded how bad it can get with, say, intense migraines or much, much worse. Stroke, any disease affecting motor function... take your pick, knowing what situation you're in is such a harrowing part of many illnesses, I can't say this doesn't keep me awake at times.
It's such a devastating story throughout, but covered in this veil of naivety. It's amazing to be sure.
Jenny's own father, the person who should've protected her, abused her in the worst possible way. She had no one, except Forrest, on her side. And you don't want to burden the one you love with your trauma. Forrest had a loving, supportive mother, whom he could talk to about anything. Jenny's mother had died and I'm assuming her sisters ran away from home, more trauma. I'm surprised for the time (mid to late 1950's) Jenny was actually believed and taken to a safe place. She probably didn't go to therapy because at that time it was considered weak and shameful. Even today people prefer not to know about child abuse because it is so monstrous. When people treat you like garbage, you believe that you are. Worthless, useless, undeserving of love or even basic human respect.
I don’t know why but the say of you shame a fish dir not being able to climb a tree, it will one day believe it is stupid. I know that not the truest form of the saying but that how I believe Jenny felt unto she was able to break free of that mindset.
Matter of fact I feel that goes for Forrest as well because when he asked if his kid was smart or… I’m going to assume he meant to finish by saying dumb or like me. He too beloved he was stupid. But he had the love of people Jenny didn’t have. All she had was Forrest to love her and care about her. Until she had he child and then she loved and cared for herself so that she could do the same for her son and others.
Yes, someone did try run across North America (specifically, Canada) in the early 1980s. His name was Terry Fox and he is celebrated as a hero in Canadian popular culture. He started the Marathon of Hope as a fundraiser for cancer research. Cancer had taken his leg, and he afterward ran the equivalent of a marathon every day for a grand total of 3,339 miles until he was forced to stop (the cancer had spread to his lungs despite his amputation). His story is very inspiring and the Terry Fox Run is still carried on as an annual cancer research fundraiser in practically all Canadian public schools. I encourage anyone to look up some documentary footage. Terry Fox is too little known in American culture.

When I was little, The Terry Fox Story was one of my favorites. Loved it! I also had a children's book about him called The Value of Facing a Challenge: The Story of Terry Fox. ❤
Then there is the tragic side to that coin. The story of Steve Fonyo who also ran across Canada for Cancer and actually made it. I met the dude when he ran through the little town I was living in and we had a good time with the guy but unfortunately he fell into addiction and hard times afterwards.

I could be wrong but I believe the reason Lt. Dan went home before Forest is that Dan was medically discharged while Forest was still active duty
That makes sense. Lt Dan may have also needed additional care that was better offered in Japan or State-side

Running was the theme of this movie. Jenny always told Forrest to run from problems cause that’s all she knew and did.
But Forrest ran to LIFE. HE Constantly ran into opportunities to better himself. I love how they wound this throughout the story.

The thing with Jenny is, she waited to contact Forrest until she had her sh*t together. She was being a good mom and had a spot of her own. She could have called him up and got whatever she wanted out of him when she was wrecked but she didn't. She waited till she was strong enough to apologize to him and I think she was honest with him in the end.

When we are young we don’t understand Jenny’s problems. As we watch this as adults, a lot of people see Jenny’s story for what it is: a tragedy with both a happy and sad ending. She was so troubled and struggled with many things in life. And we can identify with that as we get older.
Don't forget he was out running the first 3 years

Historical Fact: During the ambush in Vietnam the enemy is never actually seen. This led many combat veterans, especially Vietnam veterans, to rate this as one of the most accurate combat scenes in movie history. It was very sudden, the enemy wasn't seen, and it happened very quickly.
Music Enthusiast Fact: Inspired by Lieutenant Dan Taylor, the military veteran character he played in this movie, Gary Sinise co-founded a rock and roll cover band called "The Lt. Dan Band" during the mid-2000s. The band often goes on USO tours to play for U.S. military personnel stationed around the world and also plays various benefits for veteran-related causes. Sinise was awarded the Presidential Citizen Medal in 2008 for his charity efforts.

Every time I see someone reacting to this movie, I try to give a shout out to the Gary Sinise Foundation. He started it years ago to help veterans. Particularly veterans who have lost limbs in battle. It's such a great organization and the people who work there are so kind and helpful. So, as I know some people like to give to charities around the holidays, it's a fantastic option.

For Gary Sinise, this was the role of a lifetime - literally. After Forrest Gump. he got involved with charity organizations helping wounded veterans, and it's been a major part of his life ever since.
What cracks me up is that no matter how many pictures people take of Forrest, his eyes are always closed, LOL.

Jenny, through her childhood trauma is pushing away everything she knows is good for her. That is Forrest. She doesn't want to let her troubled soul spoil who he is. That's what trauma does, it pushes you so low that inside you hate yourself & don't want to ruin good people lives. Fearing if her & Forrest became a couple and her trauma kept getting triggered, she would lose the one person in the world who does love her & wants the best for her.
She's a tragic character and a lot of people blame her for it. The poor girl doesn't believe she deserves to be loved.

I was really down on Jenny for a long time until I finally realized what you described so well. Also to her credit, Jenny could at any time have taken advantage of Forrest's generosity with his massive wealth, but she never did.
I empathize with you, brother. 2 years ago my father was diagnosed with cancer. He's been doing a lot better lately, but for that first year it was REALLY touch n go.

Cancer is an evil, insidious disease. I was diagnosed in 2021, surgery 2022, 35 radiation treatments and 18 months of chemo. I get checked every 3 months, and they tell me if I'll live another six. For anyone going through it, and for anyone who's lost someone to it, you have my profound and abiding sympathy.

I watched this movie so many times as a kid. It might sound odd but I always admired the way Forest's Mom accepted her death with such grace and comforted her child until the very end. That little scene left a huge impact on me and my outlook on life. I hope I can do that for my daughter as well.

I lost my Mom to cancer over 10 years ago. We still miss her like air. It gets better over time, but not much.

If you think about it, the scene in Jenny's dorm room really is "key to the plot". It was after this that Jenny started getting into trouble. Sending nude photos to a porn magazine, singing naked in a sketchy club where "a lot of guys grab me!" Then you see her spiral out of control. A theory I read is that in the dorm room scene, Jenny ultimately feels guilty for trying to take advantage of Forrest. She sees Forrest as innocent, and sees herself as an abuser like her father. And she apologized for anything she might have done because she was "really messed up for a long time." If this theory holds water, then that scene really is key to the plot, my friend.❤ your reactions.
When his mom dies, that part hits me so hard as well. Lost my mom to cancer 9 years ago. I never talk about it, cuz it just hurts too much. Glad your mom is fighting the good fight.

I never thought about it before but I love that we never see inside Jenny's childhood home. Our imagination fills in the gaps and it hangs over Jenny's story. No matter how far she tries to get away in distance and time, it's like a ton weight tied to her ankle. Literal hell on earth.

I loved your reaction. I believe the feather flying away is symbolic of the prayer Jenny prayed when she asked God to make her into a bird so she could fly far away. Everything was right with Forrest and her son so she was free to go.

I have a thigh sized Forrest Gump tattoo with the all the characters as part of his face. Movie has very special meaning to me. Everyone gives Jenny shit, I feel so lucky I was given help when I was 9 or I woulda ended up Livin the kinda life she did. She didn’t think she deserved his love “you don’t wanna marry ME, Forrest”
I don't think Jenny married Forrest to get an 'easy end to her life'. I think having her son had her go through therapy, and she understood a lot of things. When she wrote to him about their son, she wanted to give him to his father. And she wanted to finally be able to do what she couldn't for the longest time... accept that she was enough for Forrest. Because people think Jenny was kind of being condescending to Forrest but that wasn't it at all. She was 'damaged goods', in her mind. She destroyed everything she touched, so she made sure to keep Forrest as far away from her as she could so that she wouldn't poison him like she did everything else. In the end, she made peace with herself, with her past, and she finally went for what she had wanted all her life. A peaceful , normal life with Forrest, her childhood love.
People always hated Jenny, but my heart always broke for her. People who have experienced true hurt in their youth understands her. I know how it feels to be so broken inside that you seek out the things and people who hurt you, because you don't deserve love. Sure it's not true, but if you have been around hurt and pain your entire life, it's difficult to understand love or peace
What always felt incomplete with her is she's always the bad example of a time period. For the film, she's great and necessary as that contrast.
But I've always been waiting to see the version of Jenny that makes it out and gets better. That's a movie that could really help a lot of people.

I never hated her. They explained pretty clearly early on what was happening and how it impacted her personal relationships. She did love Forest, but she herself was broken and hurt, and she didn't twant to hurt Forest.
Most people don't hate her, but they don't like her either.
Its sad what she suffered but is not a excuse for all the bad decisions she made.

He was very quiet but when he watched this movie he was always laughing and would open up more. This movie hits hard for me now. My mom has recently been diagnosed with cancer and we are disconnected due to the past. She had the Jenny mentality but had me. Her boyfriends were abusive to me physically and verbally. I've talked to her about it and never got an apology for her neglecting me. Almost as if she put it out of her mind so I should too. Growing up, when she didn't have a bf, wasn't the greatest either. If my grades were bad, she'd scream at me or say I was an awful child. A time I tried to stand up against her last bf, he told me I had no right as she was an adult and I had no say. They decided to smoke a joint in the kitchen while my sister was crawling around in a diaper. I think I was 14 or 15. The sister crawling around is my oldest sister. I have a younger sister. My mom kept her pregnancy a secret from everyone, including me. Both my sisters were premature. The younger one was put on a heart monitor. The last bf? He went to prison for selling cocaine. Going to prison didn't really change much as he wasn't around unless he wanted money or my mom. Now, he works fast food, with my youngest sister. He wants to gain back lost time, but she ain't having any of it. My oldest sister thinks I have abandoned all of them, as 'I'm not around much anymore'. 😣I can't explain what happened in the past to her, just instantly the bad brother who doesn't care. Doesn't help that my mom has told my sisters that they don't need any man in their life and that they should be independent. I've tried multiple times to get them to move out of the house that I moved out of. It's falling apart and has a fallen tree in the backyard. My wife and I would pay to get them a condo, pay the deposit fee, and 1st months rent. Constantly turned down. Now if I ask if I can visit or take them out to dinner, I am met with anger. I'm so very lost and it hurts so much 😢.

How awful for you 😟 Have you thought of writing them a letter? Like sent through the mail? They can’t see your effort for what it is because they’re looking at it through the perspective of whatever your mom may have told them with their memories of rarely seeing you. People enjoy getting personal letters, and because that’s so rare now, they probably won’t be able to help but to open it and read it. That may bring you some peace, because you’ve had your say and the ball will be in their court. And they’ll have their letters to keep and read over and think about things in a different way.
If they’re adults. If they’re still minors, maybe you can try it when they’re older. But you shouldn’t have to hold on to that hurt without them knowing the full story at least. You owe them that and yourself, too. I hope you can find a way to let go of it. Good luck.

She told me that she's dealing with some issues herself and not blind to the situations. I don't want to pressure her because of that. She does A LOT! Almost feels that I had passed a baton. I took care of her and younger sister when I was younger than her. I'm still working through it. Thank you again. No idea what it means to see a reply like that. 😥
My mom has been battling breast cancer for years as well, I hope your mom gets a speedy recovery and that you can haver her for many more years. There's nothing wrong with crying, that just shows you're a real person with feelings and love. My best wishes.

Hi Sir, thank you for your reaction and im sorry for the loss of your Grandmother. I related to Jenny’s character the most because of the abuse she suffered. As a result of being a victim of SA it is hard to cope with. You lose yourself in so many ways especially when you’re so innocent . Not having a mother, not trusting anyone else, so many emotions. Remember that she said she always wanted to be a bird and fly away. For Jenny that is all she ever knew being used and abused by others especially the men she was involved with stemming from her abuse as a child. This type of abuse is not hard to cope with and overcome. Forrest may not have been smart but he was aware of everything and the his true self awareness and empathy for everyone especially Jenny. Thank you again, happy to hear your mother is doing better!

Real talk though; I will never, ever blame Jenny for anything she does. She grew up abused and it took basically her whole life to figure out she was worth more than running away from what cared about her.
It's hard to find a Forest Gump level friend, both to Lieutenant Dan and to "I gotta find Bubba!". That's almost some Samwise Gamgee level friendship.

The best thing Forrest was ignorant of was hate and intolerance. He didn't have an ounce of that in his heart.

I feel people are too hard on Jenny. They don't flat out say what atrocities she went through with her dad, but they sure do hint at it and that would mess anyone up. So considering that trauma, I can't blame her one bit for how her life turned out and the issues she had as a result. I also don't think she just went back to Forest to take care of her and her son. I think she finally saw her worth and wanted to die happy.
I understand that she got diddy’d as a kid, and how that could fuck her up mentally, but she proceeded to fuck up Forest much worse and play with his poor heart all his life that he knew her. HE EVEN CALLED HER OUT! Im sorry but anyone who says that Jenny doesn’t deserve the hate is an absolute f’ing moron who is either a complete fucking idiot or someone who just doesn’t understand what the word manipulation means because she manipulated Forest nearly the entire movie to love her and care for her, saying she’ll be back, this and that, whatever but proceeds to go have sex with multiple men, does drugs, tries committing suicide two times(once infront of Forest and a second time after fucking a dude and taking heroine, cocaine and other such drugs).
Like give me a fucking break, and then she asks him to marry her RIGHT AFTER, she says that she has a incurable disease which is probably either AIDS/HIV and most importantly, when she knew he had bread on deck.
“Considering trauma” Consider the fact that Jenny is a terrible human being who used Forest’s feelings and being as a crutch to slowly break over time whenever she needed his help to heal her own ego and disgusting self.
Jenny is a terrible character and anyone with a few more braincells could see that she was, EOM agreed too.

I saw this in the theater with my mom who passed away in 2018. She LOVED Sally Field, but Tom Hanks was right up there in her book as well.

Thanks for doing this movie, it’s my favourite movie, yet it’s a hard watch for me, because for some reason it makes me feel emotional and yet I don’t even know why, maybe it’s the thought of always wanting to do better for myself and to always try and do good in this world however I can do that, makes me feel something about this movie. It inspires me I feel, and I don’t really know why, but it does, it’s a beautiful movie.

When I saw this in the theater, it happened to be the first time I tried X. If you don't know, it really enhances empathy and gives a profound sense of love. As emotional as this movie is anyway, I was THERE for Forrest in every situation. I felt like when the Grinch's heart grew three sizes. 🤣 It was a profound emotional experience and quite magical.

Absolutely! That’s why I also love watching Awkward Ashleigh, she is unapologetically emotional and so very open. I think it’s brave. Especially for the guys who are still living in a culture that tries to tell them that feeling feelings is weak 🙄

ive seen this prolly 500 times. i cry every time and thats normally not me. this movie is one of the best ever. no matter who you are or where you came from there is something in this movie you can relate too. whether it be sadness your experienced in life, love, lost, being born again , making things right with you past . something every person can relate too.
Jenny didn't reject Forrest. She tried to protect him from her. She knew he was pure and she felt dirty and unworthy. She did love him. She loved him very much. She didn't feel like she was enough for him. I don't understand why no one ever talks about her trauma and abuse when they are downing her for not dragging him into the depths with her.
Yeah, really takes any enjoyment out of watching Forrest Gump reactions. I’m fact, the first thing I did was come to the comments to see how she was received in this reaction. It looks like it’s the standard hate for a character that was sexually abused by her father for years & has horrible esteem & commitment issues tied to that.

@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 absolutely. All they see is Forrest loved her. They don't see that her most loving act was not being with him while she was damaged.
To this day, I always break down at the end. There are many tear jerking moments (mom dying, Bubba dying, etc) but that end gets me every time.
Watched this for the first time when I was about 5 or 6. The moment when Forest mocked the principal by breathing heavy scared the heck out of me. I didn’t realize he was mocking him I just thought there was something seriously wrong with Forest🤣

Watching this movie definitely hits me different now than it used to, especially when his mom dies. My mom used to have a bunch of crazy sayings that as a kid made no sense to me & the mom in this movie always reminded me of my mom in that way. The first time I tried watching this movie after my mom passed I had to stop because it was a gut punch. There’s no need to be sorry for that scene hitting you like that because you only have one mom.
Don’t be sorry. I lost my mom to cancer in 2020. It hurts seeing stuff like this but it also helps.

Prayers for you and your mother. Mine passed 2 weeks before I graduated from cancer(36 years ago) and there is never a day I do not think about her.
My dad loved this movie and we always enjoyed watching it together. I remember watching it with him last Christmas and it would be our last time. He passed away a few months ago and this movie gets me every time now. This one and Oh Brother Where Art Thou just bring me to tears thinking about him.

Jenny was totally flawed. But people seem to think she was cruel. I think she was broken and didn't know how to reciprocate love. I also was always of the belief the child truly was Forrest's kid
What else is there to say that hasn't already been said of Forrest Gump. The movie is a master class in filmmaking and, 30 years later, still touches people at their core. I am happy to watch along this one with you regardless it not being a first time.

Your sympathetic words near the end of the film regarding Jenny, I found incredibly moving. You're a man with a kind heart. Such a contrast from the comments by the numerous people who showed such a lack of empathy and understanding of Jenny trying to cope with her demons. It was a miracle that she survived what her evil father put her through as a child.
Watching this movie as a kid, I always saw it as underrated. Sentimental moments are fine, if they're earned. Here, they absolutely are and don't feel manipulative. Robert Zemeckis was great director of the 80s and 90s, starting with Romancing The Stone, all the way through the Back To The Future movies, the phenomenally well made Who Framed Roger Rabbit to this film. His use of special effects is usually spot on and rarely seems dated. Even the CGI here looks pretty good, considering it's from 1994. Better than a lot of superhero movies today, which look instantly fake.
I remember feeling awful for Jenny. I had an abusive parent, though not the same way as her. Sure, she's hurting Forrest and making stupid decisions, but she went through utter hell with her dad. If there's one thing I've learned as a guy, when you abuse a woman that way, especially when she's young, it's even more horrendous. The whole theme of the movie, Run Forrest Run, is literally about Jenny. She's always running. Forrest doesn't realize it, but he has life figured out. She doesn't - until the end when she realizes all she needs is her 2 Forrests. I didn't see her coming back as her manipulating or using Forrest, for his love or his money. She had a lot of crap to work through and she felt being as far away from such a good guy like Forrest was the best thing she could do. It took her years to finally accept everything that had happened to her and come to terms with who she was and her childhood. I have felt much the same way, though I wasn't abused in the same way she was. I thought I had a Jenny once. At least he had one.

After I lost my mother to cancer, I'd spend most days sitting w/my grandmother. We'd watch news and her favorite shows, but sometimes she'd ask me to put a movie on, this one was a favorite of hers. My grandmother was 98 at the end, but when something made her laugh, she would cry laughing😂
I think this film still holds the my record for repeat viewings in the theater the yr of its release. I pretty sure it was 4 times, and I was 11 or 12. Thank u for the memories J💗

I felt the same way about Jenny when I first saw this movie as a tween when it came out in the '90s - how could she not stay with Forest? How could she 'use' him like that (sure, she didn't marry him after he became a gazillionaire because she didn't see herself as good for him, but still). Then I met so many more people who had had had trauma similar to her (and learned about that in the people I already new) and how these things had affected their lives. I got older and gained much more compassion for my fellow humans. In addition, I realized, while this movie is about Forest Gump, who is the main character (obviously), the movie is ALSO about Jenny as her story is running directly parallel to Forest's. She says it in the song at the strip club: How many roads must a man walk down before you can call him a man? And how many seas must the white dove sail before she sleeps in the sand? The answer my friend is blowing in the wind...
I actually stopped watching reactions to this movie for the most part because I'm always so annoyed with the lack of empathy towards Jenny. Almost everything she does is a result of unhealed trauma. I feel like adults watching in the 2000s should recognize this.

She even apologised at the end and said she was messed up for a long time. In the age where things like mental health and abuse are spoken about more than ever before it’s crazy to me that people just…don’t get it? It doesn’t completely *justify* her actions but it explains them.

@@taneshah.1260 Agree hard. Even when I watched this movie as a kid when it first came out, I always felt so sorry for Jenny, and it was very apparent to me why she was the way she was. I used to assume most people would have sympathy for her, and was shocked when I first saw how much hate she got. She is one of three female characters in film that I feel often get very unfairly dumped on (The other two are Kit from "A League of Their Own" and Wendy from "The Shining").

I lost my mom to cancer 15 years ago. To this day, I can’t go more than a couple/few weeks without her showing up in one of my dreams. I miss her very much.
When Forrest, Jr. says “I love you too, Daddy”, I tear up. I think it’s because of Haley’s smile that shows that he knows for sure that Forrest is his father and is truly happy and loves him.

The makers say Jenny has hep, but based on the timeline and what we see Jenny do not to mention what didn't see her do it has to be aids
Jenny was a drug abuser not Gay. The 70s was still in full Sexual Revolution and AIDs was not a thing yet. It wasn't until the 80s that the first cases started showing up. At that time it was only affecting Gay men, which Jenny was not either of the two. The author of the book said she died of HepC but the movie director preferred she die of AIDs
This made me realize what incredible editing you have. You always capture the good parts with great timing and cutting. I've seen lots of reactions that miss a good scene or don't cut it as well, and it makes a big difference.
