  • I use Chicken grit or Poultry grit for Mixing potting soil for succulents. I use it also for other more moisture-loving plants but not in as high a quantity. There were questions on previous videos so I thought I would go through my process.

    hey I work at a farm store and im only here because a lady came in today for this for her plants. Pro tip farm stores have 20kg bags in the back for farmers with alot of chickens. If u want a rly good deal just ask the cashiers. My store sells them for 22.99. Oh also the crushed oyster shells would add calcium, probably not salt because they should be washed since chickens are meant to eat it. Happy planting

      Hey, that's great. I would need to have someone carry the larger bags into my garden area. Those sound like a great deal but I can only manage the smaller bags. Next time maybe when I go on a cement run I can also get the bigger grit!

    Great video Kim. This very helpful and informative. I only use the cactus soil and perlite, however the perlite keeps floating to the top when ever I water, which drives me insane. But my plant love it though. I will try to find most if not all and give it a try.

      @KimsGardensandHome  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes, I know how you feel about those "floaters." But it still works well for drainage.

      @@KimsGardensandHome . Thanks so much. Perhaps the soil is enriched by the probiotics. I considered rinsing the grit very well before using but I guess I’ll go ahead and use it as is. I actually have two aloe plants that are pretty much the same age and size. I’ll transplant one and see what happens. The one I’m going to transplant doesn’t seem as healthy so if it survives and improves I’ll have a good answer to my question. 😀

    Hi Kim, great video, Thank You! What do you use to control pests especially root mealies and spider mites?

    • @KimsGardensandHome
      @KimsGardensandHome  Před 3 lety

      I like a systemic for indoor plants. If they go outside in the summer, I just stop using it about a month before time to go outside. (So it won't hurt bees, butterflies..) It is put into the soil and then is running through the stems and roots etc and protects all around. I have a link in the description, an affiliate link. • @KimsGardensandHome
      @KimsGardensandHome  Před 3 lety

      Yes, this would be great for snake plants. Since they are a succulent type plant whose leaves hold a lot of water.

    Hey Kim, tk u for the video!
    I have a question, is this ratio 1g soil/1qt hard material good for all succulents types?
    Also, would this ratio provide a good enough drainage for them in the rainy Fl summer? I have some succs outside...
    I guess that was more than 1 question😁

    • @KimsGardensandHome
      @KimsGardensandHome  Před 3 lety +1

      I think it would be good for the rainy areas since it would drain the water away after the rains stop. Sitting in a puddle is a no-no. In fact, if it doesn't rain in a few days, they may need to be watered. (in pots)

    Hey there, so I bought Vigoro all- purpose potting mix, perlite, lava rock, pumice. I’ve tried looking for sand and cannot find any that are used for soil mixtures. Could I use pavers sand or desert sand? Or can I just use chicken grit in replace of the sand? I’m trying to make a potting mixture for my citrus trees as they too need well draining soil.

    • @KimsGardensandHome
      @KimsGardensandHome  Před 3 lety +1

      I use the coarse paver's sand when I get some. Not the "play sand" because it is too powdery and packs too much. The coarser sand is easier for roots to grow there way around thru the soil.

    • @johansolo756
      @johansolo756 Před rokem +1

      Skip the sand and add more grit and/or perlite
