Laura I am a relatively new sailor.A few years ago a bunch of boats were set to sail with me to Cape May . The morning we were set to go they all backed out . The trip was about 40 miles . I was terrified. The only thing that kept me going was you . I thought if this young girl could sail around the world by herself. I could sail 40 miles .Your courage is inspiring ! Thank you

I just finished watching your stupendous circumnavigation of the world and awed by your determination at such a young age. You must have a strong relationship with your parents to be so confident and mature. They, too, must have the same assurance.
What a colossal achievement, Laura. You are one-in-a-million.

Well done Laura, you are an inspiration and hopefully some make take up the path you have followed and learn some of the lessons that you have as regards living a balanced life. As another Kiwi, it is good to know that you feel that New Zealand is a part of your life.

I love Laura. She has her own character: She is brave, has perseverance, a free and adventurous spirit. And that's helluva lot more than all those cunnies these days who just want to drink and party, party and drink. The whole of the Netherlands thought she was crazy and she heard that regularly from her classmates. The fact is that they were just jealous of her free spirit, people feel that. All those people are just too down-to-earth, which she said in her documentary. That people in Europe only love money, want a proper job, a family and die without ever seeing anything of the world. People are so hell-bent on making sure everyone is the same in this so-called modern world and that's why they found this whole thing so unbelievable. I may not have such a reputation as her, but as a long-time traveler I know that anyone who can't believe the unbelievable has not seen much of the world. And that bullshit about being too young didn't make any sense either. Olaf Haraldsson, one of the kings of Norway, was 12 when he was on the oars and fought in his first battle. His half-brother Harald Hardrada was 15 in his first battle and after that left for present-day Turkey to make his reputation. And today in this ''civilized '' world someone at that age wants to undertake something, everyone immediately considers it a crime against humanity. Yes, she could have died on her journey but that is the risk of an adventure. Traditionally adventurers have always risked their lives exploring the world and what kind of one would she be if she didn't. We are all going to die anyway and I would much rather die far from home on some epic adventure than in this godforsaken country. Above all, she didn't die, and even if that had happened, she would still have had a reputation. She knew what she was doing because she is a born adventurer off the coast of New Zealand while her parents were sailing around the world. Small wonder that she said she had nothing in common with the Dutch except that she speaks the language. As someone from different backgrounds, I have always been able to relate myself to that mindset. The Netherlands is a country of bookkeepers and smartphone groupies. The moral of the story is that you are not supposed to live your life in front of your TV, and you are not supposed to spend your days doing something you hate. You have also been given this life and should be grateful enough to do something meaningful while you are here. We all know such people and it is quite sad to see them waste their lives like that. They are already dead and they don't even know. That's why I think we can all learn a lot from Laura's story and journey. We are all stories in the end, make it a good one.

Her parents should have said ‘No dear child, parents need to be there when you need them. So they need to be close. Why? Because especially in puberty kids need direction and regulated freedom to protect them against high risk and to take over the steering wheel when the ship is out of focus. Children grow up in a social context and in meaningful relationships. The need space to grow up, but the’re boundaries between manageable risks and gambles. And children need protection to be there and role models to learn. You may not understand it now, maybe when you grow up.’

You are a little late. She is grown up. She's 30 years old. This all happened a long time ago.
