Forgotten NHL Players: Tim Connolly "forgotten" Sabre

  • Tim connolly was drafted by new York islanders in 1999 NHL draft as 5th overall pick. In 2001 he was traded to buffalo alongside taylor pyatt in exchange for Michael peca
    Connolly was known for his sick stickhandling abilities, however too many concussions and injuries prevented him to really reach his full potential, missing entire 2003-04 regular season, 2004-05 because of lockout and all but two games in 2006-07 season when sabres won president’s trophy as regular season’s best team.
    Pointwise his best season was 2009-10 when he had 65 points in 73 games, including 48 assists. But he wasn’t as flashy as back in his best days when he was dancing from coast-to-coast making ridiculous moves and scoring beautiful goals
    In 2006 playoffs, Connolly was arguably sabres’ best forward scoring 11 points in 8 games but in Game 2 of Eastern conference semifinals against Ottawa senators received terrible head concussion and it was where his career took major stepback. Who knows what would have happened if he was healthy down stretch in that playoffs, he was too good that year.
    His total career numbers are
    679 Games played 131 Goals 300 assists 431 points
    Playoffs
    36 games 5 goals 18 assists 23 points
    Could have been much impressive stats if he was fit,
    His hands were absolute fire

    I'm 60 years old, so I remember quite well Gil Perreault. As great as he was, I can state that Tim Connelly was the most gifted stick handler in Sabres history. Tim was unbelievable with that puck.

    05-06 Connolly had found his game and was ready to be a star until the concussion. What a damn shame.

    Still a firm believer that Connolly is a top 10 handler of all time, you put him in this current era of hockey and the sky is the limit. Unfortunate he got absolutely decimated in Ottawa.

      Don’t forget Henrik Tallinder, Jay McKee, Thomas Vanek, Dmitri Kalinin and Teppo Numminen. I mean Brian Campbell and Toni Lydman weren’t the same without their respective partners. Buffalo wasn’t even the same anymore without those key defensemen. Campbell’s the only lucky one, ‘cause he won the cup with Chicago.

    Concussions really derailed his career. As a fan, I even forgot he was with Buffalo for as long as 10 years. I do remember so many times you felt he finally was healthy and ready to take that next step, he would get a concussion - no fault of his own, obviously.

    • @dannythomas417
      @dannythomas417 Před 3 lety +2

      If he, Thomas Vanek, Teppo Numminen, Henrik Tallinder, Dmitri Kalinin and Jay McKee were healthy, they’d have that cup against their former captain as well as Hasek’s old bitch Roloson.

    • @bguynn191
      @bguynn191 Před 2 měsíci

      He had 2 concussions in his entire career, concussions didn’t derail his careee he had a protruding disc in his neck that was hitting a nerve that gave him headaches. Once they found that out he went back to play for the leafs but being out of the game for two years at that time left him at an extreme disadvantage

    (EDIT: Haha... just noticed the clip of him scoring in the Philly blowout game was cut from the highlight reel I made. You should've asked cause I would have gave you the raw video without the music, and I have a better quality source now too.) Anyway, Tim was arguably the most skill-talented player to ever suit up for the Sabres. If Patrick Kane was injury prone, Blackhawks fans would be talking about Kane the way Sabres fans talk about Tim. I'd wager Connolly, Kane and Datsyuk are the 3 best puck handlers to ever play the game. Here's the highlight reel, apparently Tim's family has seen it: czcams.com/video/UIauE5XrMsk/video.html

      I have seen your video dozen times, you did great job. Few months ago I decides to make my own to extend his highlights as much as possible. Watched every sabres highlights available on youtube in order to extend his highlights. Unfortunately there are not many highlights from 05-06 regular season and postseason when he had season of his career. His best dangles and dekes would make video at least 15-20 minutes alone plus his goals on top of that. Such an natural talent. Hate when people talk about most skilled players in nhl history ans no one mentions connolly, even as a honorable mention. Guy had silky hands. He was an artist

      @@turarosicky Dude you're not kidding, this guy is Top-10 all time when it comes to puck handling. I was really happy when he came back for the 50th anniversary celebrations... people gave him a bad rap at the end of his career, so it was nice to see the reunion and the crowd cheered. I'm hoping to someday interview him if possible. Anyway, EXCELLENT job with this video man, it was a great complete career highlights video. I may do one more Connolly video coming up sometime this year, more of a commentary kinda thing this time. Oh and I hear ya on the lack of 05/06 regular season footage. Hell... even playoff footage in acceptable quality is hard to find!

    • @dannythomas417

      I guess ‘cause it was his last playoff goal. In game 2 he had a season ending concussion that caused him to miss nearly the entirety of next season. At least he was back in time to face his former club, the Islanders. And that injury was less than two minutes into the game.
