Started off on the bad (ACL surgery) foot
It wasn't about them not being able to come up with it. If you listen again, the plaintiff decided to pay it in full because they didn't have it at that exact moment or didn't expect to have to have it. They paid their half of the security deposit and in most cases that holds the property for 30 days before you move in. The plaintiff wanted to control the situation, along with the defendants finances, so she paid.

@@lusciouslipslibratotally agree, a half share of rent on most houses in the UK would be more than that and I assume it would be in the US too. I know this was 2018, but still that is so cheap. When she said the amount I immediately thought that must be their half not the whole rent.

I remember a roommate went to Mexico without telling me for a month and when i called for their half of the rent they mentioned they weren't living in the apartment for the month so they don't have to pay. WTF.

like JJ says, "if your toothbrush is there, you're there" so you pay the rent, utilities, etc... what does she expect, that they get another tenant for 2 weeks? 😅
What they were trying to say was they had already left. They paid rent for the month but didn't stay the full time because the plaintiffs put them out. I believe them. Now they want to double back and get the half of the first month. No, if they paid in full the last month they were there and only stayed half the time, that made them even.
I sense that bathrooms in that place would have been hazmat level disaster areas
That $318 wouldn't pay for a week's groceries for either of them.

Oh my......these people had such cheap rent and utilities. Even for a super small town in 2018. Where on earth did they work that it was a stretch to come up with their half of the initial rent? Between 4 people that rent would be a little over $100 a piece. Sooooo weird. That's less than my half of rent in the early 1990's and I was only making $5.55/hr.

It was the principle. They clearly paid rent for the last month they were there because the plaintiff was only suing for the first month. If they didn't live there the entire last month and they paid, that should offset their half of the first month.

It sounded like that, but that wasn't what she was trying to say. She was trying to give a timeline of when they left. They was trying to say that the plaintiffs put them out midway through the month so they shouldn't owe them anything, which is true.
