  • This video shows Dr. Evan Matthews explaining how to assess specific gravity of urine using a refractometer. This is good for assessing acute hydration status. This device can also be used to assess serum protein concentration.

      Anything you eat or drink will be impact the USG. So when you test is determined by what you want to know.

    isn't dehydration supposed to have lower Na levels? since the body tries to compensate by secereting ADH and aldosterone which retain Na in blood

    • @VivoPhys
      @VivoPhys  Před 4 lety

      Dehydration is the loss of body water not electrolytes. As you lose body water the solutes in the blood will concentrate. This will cause blood sodium levels to elevate as this is a concentration based measurement. Your body will eventually try to correct this issue by holding onto water and making you feel thirsty so you will consume water. This will bring the concentrations of solutes (like sodium) back to pre-dehydration levels when rehydration is complete.

    Sample of urine should be taken randomly or collect 24hrs sample

    • @VivoPhys
      @VivoPhys  Před 2 měsíci

      It depends on what you are trying to learn, but typically, it is a spot sample (not 24hr) to determine current hydration status.

    is 1.004 normal? i drank water 1 hr before the morning test at the hospital. i peed already before leaving home in the morning, did it affect the result?

    • @VivoPhys
      @VivoPhys  Před 2 lety

      Hi Annaliza Canete. Dehydration is commonly defined as a urine specific gravity >1.020 g/mL. Anything below this would not be dehydrated (typically it would mean euhydrated or normal hydration levels). See the link below for more information:

      Hi Wlszxc Nglix. The definitions and cut points for euhydration vary. However, a common threshold using urine specific gravity (USG) to identify a boundary separating dehydrated (>1.020 g∙mL-1) from euhydrated (≤1.020 g∙mL-1) (ACSM et al. 2007; NCAA 2017) suggests you are euhydrated, but on the boundary.
