- This video shows Dr. Evan Matthews explaining how to assess specific gravity of urine using a refractometer. This is good for assessing acute hydration status. This device can also be used to assess serum protein concentration.

Evan, this was a great resource when our labs got shut down by the pandemic. Thank you!
I'm glad to hear it has helped. Check out some of the other videos I have up. Stay healthy!
Thanks for the information, very useful, excellent informative video
this was a great video and told me exactly what i wanted to know. thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Learning about urinalysis for a college program I am taking. This was super helpful. Thanks!
I'm glad it helped.
Thank you for explaining this procedure!
Glad I could help.
My mom uses one of these everyday. I have diabetes Insipidus . Have to check it every day and night.
Thank you I am gonna be awesome in my future job thank you
I'm sure you will be. :)
can know what type and model of refractometer used
What time of day is best to test? And before or after eating?? Thank you for your information in advance.
Anything you eat or drink will be impact the USG. So when you test is determined by what you want to know.
isn't dehydration supposed to have lower Na levels? since the body tries to compensate by secereting ADH and aldosterone which retain Na in blood
Dehydration is the loss of body water not electrolytes. As you lose body water the solutes in the blood will concentrate. This will cause blood sodium levels to elevate as this is a concentration based measurement. Your body will eventually try to correct this issue by holding onto water and making you feel thirsty so you will consume water. This will bring the concentrations of solutes (like sodium) back to pre-dehydration levels when rehydration is complete.
Sample of urine should be taken randomly or collect 24hrs sample
It depends on what you are trying to learn, but typically, it is a spot sample (not 24hr) to determine current hydration status.
What is this price for urinometer
On Google you can find urine specific gravity refractometers for between $20-200.
Yeast is not done..and granular casts is not done..what is that meaning i Don't know.pls tell me
It sounds like they did not test your urine for those things.
is 1.004 normal? i drank water 1 hr before the morning test at the hospital. i peed already before leaving home in the morning, did it affect the result?
That value means you are likely well hydrated.
@@VivoPhys more blessings to you! I am worried I have a kidney problem since it is lower than 1.005 😑
I am not medically trained but they would likely look at other tests to determine kidney function.
1.010 - 1.030 range is normal
1.010 specific gravity in urine is normal?
Hi Annaliza Canete. Dehydration is commonly defined as a urine specific gravity >1.020 g/mL. Anything below this would not be dehydrated (typically it would mean euhydrated or normal hydration levels). See the link below for more information:

What does that erythrocytes 3+ means?
Sorry. I'm not sure what you are referring to. Was it something in this video? If yes, what time in the video.
I am referrering my urine test, because it endicate erythrocytes 3+ ...what does that mean?
Sp.gravity is not done...meaning what?? Pls replay
It sounds like they did not test your urine for those things.
Da result of my sp. Gravity is 1.010 is dis normal??
Yes. You are likely hydrated.
And also sa result of my hematology is high of platelet counts 697.00 and my basophil is high also 1.30..please give me a advice what i should i do...plzzzz
I don't know those values. Please consult a medical professional. I am not medically trained.
Normal range is 1.010-1.030
Normal range is 1.010-1.030
My result in sp gravity is 1.020 is this normal?
Hi Wlszxc Nglix. The definitions and cut points for euhydration vary. However, a common threshold using urine specific gravity (USG) to identify a boundary separating dehydrated (>1.020 g∙mL-1) from euhydrated (≤1.020 g∙mL-1) (ACSM et al. 2007; NCAA 2017) suggests you are euhydrated, but on the boundary.

So what is euhydrated?
It means normally hydrated.
Normal range is 1.010-1.030
