I understand that this movie has given a slight reflection of a typical Samoan cultural setting, perhaps, this may be an entertaining movie for a Samoan specific audience, however, this movie and many like it on youtube has probably done irreparable damage to the Samoan tourism industry.
I had found this movie and the entire series of Samoan low budget cheapskate soapies movies, very cringeworthy.
Conversely, and, in saying this, as a reflection of a typical South Pacific underdeveloped society which invariably is reflected in many low budget movie productions with inferior quality of thespian professionalism and production, subsequently, reveals the state of the Samoan quality of life.
In this sense, you have revealed to the youtube audience, some 1 billion or so potential viewers, the current state of a typical Samoan quality of life. From a first impression view, it reveals that Samoans live in a very agrarian and austere quality of life. And that Samoans are very religious, and although poor, will over indulge in church matters and the primary focus of village life revolves around a church which is also a conduit for village life rites of passage, such as funerals, marriages etc. That the Matai system also acts as the judicial court system for matters concerning civil and criminal proceedings relating to local village matters.
In that digital technology has also allowed a brief glimpse to the outside world, a window to the world, for Samoans via social media networks, like facebook, therefore, allowing for Samoans to be self educated and in tune with real time events around the world.
I would honestly confess that whilst I had been able to amuse myself with acknowledging the typical Samoan behavioural nuances, I did find most of the thematic concerns, plots, motifs universally typical and predictable with the exception that it was a Samoan version. Admittedly, with the austere budgeted Samoan movie industry and the very shallow depth of our local talents it will be difficult to produce a Ridley Scott or a Steven Spielberg levels of talents. But, it would not be remiss if some Samoans Albert Wendt, or more recently, like Mr Tamasese whom had produced Tulafale, would produce something less viscerally self interested and self obsessed and perhaps a return to the ABC like production of the Tusitala and other historically based movies which would appeal to a wider audience, such as the paroxysm periods during and after the Tusitala (Robert Louis Stevenson) during the New Zealand invasion of Samoa (1914-61) which will be a relevant production during the centenary year of the invasion of German Samoa. Also, historical stories such as the Tongan invasion and occupation of Samoa, Nafanua and Salamasina, Malietoa Vainuupo and the war with Aana and Atua, will formulate much more appeal for a wider audience and give a greater respect of Samoans to the world. And this will help the Samoan tourism industry as well.
Presently, the Samoan tourism industry will be flatlining with these movies.
