    When I first worked in historical archaeology @ Plimoth Plantation [recreated 1620's village], Plymouth, Massachusetts, decades ago in an undisturbed trash pit dating from the mid-late 17th century in the modern original town of Plymouth, I found an odd 1652-dated Massachusetts silver "Pine Tree" schilling that was bent at about a 90 degree angle. We had no idea why it should be there until, years later, I found a passage in a contemporary account recommending ways to cast off a witch's curse. One of these stated that a silver schilling be bent over on the edge of a table or such suitable form and, without looking, cast it over the shoulder behind you. So, I suspect that the bent schilling was just such a thing. Odd thing is, I wondered if unbending it might somehow reactivate the curse! [The bent schilling was duly accessioned into the archaeological lab field collection.]

    Also, that implies they knew mercury could be harmful.
    Also, those people that practiced magic WERE Christian. Everyone was Christian in England in those days. So to protect against those casting curses and bewitchment, it makes compete sense to use bits of scripture to protect from evil.

When my grandmother was in school and broke a Mercury thermometer she was made to clean it up and take the mercury in her hands to the office (this would have been mid to late 50s). I'd be keen on examining some of the research they have that's lead them to their hypothesis on the purposes of these bottles. From personal generational knowledge, those are often made for protection from something or someone. Always loaded with sharps of various sorts and ideally the menstrual blood of the individual to be protected (the spell literally calls for bleeding into the jar under a certain lunar phase, gross) for maximum strength but other bodily fluids can be substituted but at cost of strength of effectiveness. Once completed the bottle is to be buried in the vicinity of the one being protected. If there are a number of bottles found in a region you'll probably find old evidence of a coven in the area or a solitary practioner acting as the local healer. Those found here and there with no concentration of sites suggests a solitary practioner that remained covert.

    • @Jadeserphant
      @Jadeserphant Před 3 lety +7

      All that will work. (Ive been practicing 30 years.) The main thing about it, is that you use Directed Will to focus your intent. The components should have symbolic meaning for you. (Sharp things make the sender uncomfortable, bent nails disperse negative energy, broken mirrors do both, a variety of different things give more "weight" to your defenses, urine hair or blood,, is used to direct the negative energy to the bottle like a decoy,, etc) Visualize the negative energy bouncing back to where it came. I would recommend not visualizing a specific source (person) because there is always the chance that it could actually be coming from someplace/person that's unexpected. You want to reflect the energy,, not attack someone.. Bury the jar at a nearby crossroads, a gate,, a driveway,, or at the 4 compass points around your property...... again it should have meaning for you. Pieces of mirrors facing outwards, placed in your windows will work as well. There are many ways to disperse negative energy. But if it's physical, if an actual person is harassing you, call the police and take a self-defence course. Also, pieces of hematite buried at the 4 compass points or in your window sills, will ground out negative energy. Like I said, many ways. One final thought, in my personal experience, EVERYTHING is energy.....and energy is energy. There is no black or white, only grey, intent and repercussions...... Everything vibrates higher, lower, it changes......change your energy vibration and "lower/negative" energy can't find you. Just my experience.. I answered because this one video popped up out of nowhere. I don't generally answer questions online, but something a out your comment......idk. I hope this helps.

      @@samantharamesh7572 Your welcome. I forgot to mention, after your bottle is finished and buried. Don’t wonder if you did it correctly, unless you did something that felt “bad/wrong” then it’s fine. Don’t wonder if it’s working. It is. NEVER question the magic. Doubt will allow weak spots or holes to form. You kill the energy by questioning it. Once completed and buried just ACCEPT that it is working. If you find yourself thinking about it, or if your still getting a bit of negative energy seeping through, remember, it most likely won’t be instantaneous, it takes a little time. Instead of questioning, reinforce it by using your original visualization and use Directed Will to send some energy to top off the energy of the bottle. There is power in repetition. There is no way to know how much energy will be needed to reverse the negative energy, but when you find yourself thinking about it, that’s usually the protection needing a boost. Think of it as a rechargeable battery. Lol. As it works, you will find yourself thinking about/recharging it less and less until all the negative attack is reversed and gone. No need to dig it up or dismantle it later. It will always guard you from attacks if you give it a boost every few months. I’ve had four at the compass points of my property for 15+ years. Still going. Lol

      The first rule of witchcraft is to harm none. You must focus on positive, protective energy. If your goal is getting revenge on the person who placed the curse, then you may have bad consequences return to you. After all, wishing ill on someone, even a bad person, makes you just as bad as them. Be pure of heart and full of love, because all magic can come back to you. :)

    • @wildflower1397
      @wildflower1397 Před 2 lety +1

      @@InsertHandleHere968 It is oral tradition passed down for many many generations. There are no 'rules', but the wisdom of our ancestors tells us to be cautious. That everything we send out will return, and that you should never send out any energy unless it is something you would like to receive. Of course protection and self defense are fine. However, revenge attacks are building on the hate and negativity, not diffusing them and working towards peace and love. If you speak with any elders in the tradition, they will advise you that "harm none" is part of the Wiccan Rede. It is not a rule... it's a truth and a warning, advice and wisdom we don't take lightly.

      You never know what hazards might be in old sealed containers. There’s an imperial tomb in China that archaeologists still won’t open bc records suggest it contains a moat of liquid Mercury, and the pent up fumes could cause respiratory or neurological harm or even death. If you were listening, you noticed they said these bottles sometimes contain Mercury. And that’s just one harmful substance.

    I'm surprised there aren't more bottles with bits of the bible in them. I can see the logic in the mindset of the cunning man/woman deciding it should be added. It could be seen as using the word of god for defense. Particular verses being cut up could be due to the correlation between that verse and a type of bewitchment.

    • @thepeacefish
      @thepeacefish Před 2 lety +3

      This is a fair point but I think this is a modern idea - we may be able to get a spare bible at any dollar store, but we have to remember we’re talking about the 17th century. Although the printing press had been invented, printed books were still very expensive and most rural people (such as in the areas where these bottles were found) would have been illiterate. So there are several reasons they may not have had a bible of their own in the house, and if they did it’s very unlikely that they would have considered tearing something valuable and sacred into pieces. That’s if they were even able to read which passages would have been relevant.

    Regarding the bending or destruction of items, an animistic perspective might provide a theory to help us understand why this was practiced. In an animistic perspective everything has a spirit, even inanimate objects were thought to be alive so to speak. Breaking, destroying or otherwise killing it was to send its' spirit to the spirit world.
    Where I am from, the First Nations peoples had a burial practice of breaking items such as bows, arrows, pottery etc. and placing them in the grave with the deceased. This served two functions, but primarily it was to release the spirit of the item so that it might travel to the spirit world with the person to the "the land of the dead" to be used the same as it would have been in the world of the living.
    I find it very frustrating the inability of archeologists (and other scientific disciplines) to broaden their understanding of material culture beyond the material they directly deal with. The deeper understanding of material culture is oft found within and associated with the songs, stories, folklore, and heaven forbid (pun intended) the religious/ritual and spiritual practices/beliefs of a culture.
