Dann and Lukather were quite literally THE rock guitar sound of the 80s (only surpassed by King Edward). There were bands that had their guys, but in that era when it was hip to add some rock guitar to a pop song, it was these guys and this was indeed the sound of the era. And I love it. This was the most musically influential period for me.

I put Dann in a class of great guitarists that cut their teeth as studio musicians first, and then just wrecked my hopes as a guitarist with their bands. Steve Lukather, Neal Schon, Dann Huff, Reb Beach, etc. these guys can just play anything.
You put on a track from Toto, or Winger, Giant or early Journey, or even Hardline, and you instantly know who you’re hearing on the six string.
I have long been in awe of Dann Huff’s talent. The man just oozes musicality.

Tiger Same with his guitar picks. You can see that he's holding it while he's talking. On the close-up shots the camera breaks away right at the moment when you almost can see what type of pick it is. You will not find any information what kind of guitar picks that he uses. Guitar pick is a very integral part of a players tone. Most players will share with the interviewer on what kind of guitar picks they use. I know that Dan uses Dean Markley strings at least he did during the giant years. But there is absolutely no place where you can find information on the guitar picks that he would have used back then. He doesn't want anybody copying his sound. I even sent him a message on Facebook asking that very question. I got no response. I guess he's keeping that info classified. Lol!

dan19630 I don’t recall ever reading what he uses. Seems to be a pretty heavy pick gauge, as he really hammers the low end strings. I use a .88 mm Fender med-heavy. My gut tells me he’s using at least a 1 mm heavy watching him in the studio. There’s so much finesse in his playing, but when he rips through those runs, he’s really digging in.
I also wonder what gauge strings he’s using here. He’d break the high E on my Ibanez with his first bend, haha.

Dann’s leads are so melodic, and they are deceptively easy sounding because he’s so good. It sounds almost effortless. The first time I sat down and tried the studio solo in Stay, all the little nuances of what he was doing became painfully clear.
He’s easily one of my favorite soloists. Giant’s first whole album, especially, just kicks my ass.

daniel morales Dann and Steve Lukather are two of my biggest influences. Both studio cats with just ridiculous feel and technical ability.
I didn’t study music in college as a major (but had private instruction), but pretty much all my friends were performance majors, and on Friday nights, we’d all plug in and jam out. The reverence for both those guys (I started college in 1990, so Giant was well known then) was clear. Guys were always breaking down Huff, Lukather and Neal Schon.
