    Went to school in Somerleyton. Lived in St Olaves, Haddiscoe was home station. The info posters along the Wherry Lines are put up and maintained by a roving adopter....Me lol. Hope you caught the big skies along the new Cut between Haddiscoe and Reedham. Reedham Heritage Room is their little museum area. Platform 1 at Lowestoft(Central) is now the Transport Interchange lol.

    Well done Sarah for saving the best for last - I mean Oulton Broad North (OBN) and Lowestoft (LT)! I was born in Beccles (during the Second World War) but I was brought up in Lowestoft and then Oulton Broad - about a 2-minute cycle ride from OBN. When I first got serious about trains and train-spotting it was all steam and mechanical signal-boxes! At OBN, the crossing gates were the old swing-type, operated by the signalaman through a large wheel. At the end of the platforms (opposite the signal-box) there was an iron footbridge - great for train-spotting! There was a permanent staff of 3-4, some of whom lived in those houses directly across the tracks from the signal-box. Behind those houses there was a single siding, connected to the down (from Norwich) line, used by the local farmers to load sugar beet for Cantley, and to receive the pulp residue for fertilizer or feed. In the mid-50's steam was replaced by diesel railcars. At LT, you will have noticed that the main concourse is open to the elements - it used to be fully roofed - as were all the platforms. There was a buffet/bar at one end, a WHSmith paper/magazine store and a luggage storage area. The station was served by the town buses and by Eastern Counties - it was a 3d (old three pence) ride on the number 3 route from the station to my home! In the '70's or '80's I believe there was a plan to relocate LT station about 1/2 mile up (towards OBP) the track and redevelop the station site as a large supermarket/shopping centre - but this never eventuated!. Also, in the '50's, there was a large traffic in fresh fish, with daily (or nightly) fish trains to London and the Midlands. Sadly, all the fish has gone!! Anyway, thanks for bringing back happy memories!

      Thanks for your wonderful comment Paul and all that information is really interesting! I always love hearing from people who have fond memories of the stations I go to! It always brings so much more life to the history of the stations!

    Moab is my wash pot, Ephraim is my helmet. What you could have done with those pants at Reedham... Oh when you're at Reedham you put the found knickers on your head... Sorry, wrong channel.
    That was a great video Sarah. Very natural presenting style, really like the historic detail. I like those Edwardian era swing bridges too, majestic bits of engineering.
    As fortune would have it I am currently on my way from the Inverness area down to Hopton on Sea, visiting for Christmas. I've been to that Indian restaurant at Oulton Broad North, its fantastic. I heartily recommend it

      Haha I do love Glovestrains! Wish I had the confidence to be putting knickers on me head at stations!
      Getting the close shots of the swing Bridge was a nightmare as so much of what would be great to view the bridge from is private property I ended up pushing through a bramble bush and getting about 6 inches of mud up my jeans 😅
      Perhaps I will have to try out the Indian restaurant! Enjoy your Christmas in Hopton! 🎅 🎄

      @@sarahwiththetrains I really enjoy Glovestrains too. Thanks for going the extra mile to get a good view of the bridge. I remember years ago, pre internet etc doing similar to try to photograph engineering subjects and get good views. If I had more time I would invite you to go to the Indian at Oulton Broad as a thank you for your great films.

    Hi Sarah, Only just discovered your vlogs and after binge-watching all of them I wanted to let you know just how much I enjoyed them. I would very much like you to give the Sarahwiththetrains treatment to the Bittern line to Sheringham, paying particular attention to the wonderfully restored Gunton station. I think only you could do it full justice. May I look forward to seeing this sometime in the future.....I do hope so. Keep on trukkin' Gal! John from Sheringham

    Happy Christmas! Oulton Broad North will forever have memories for me now of missing the train as I misremembered the time and arrived with only a minute to spare, on the wrong platform. Then followed either a 2 hour wait for a train or a 2 hour walk to Somerleyton. I did the latter.

    Excellent Sarah, thank you. If you have explained the derivation of the word Wherry before, I missed it sorry. That friend of yours Narration Sarah knows her stuff doesn't she?

    • @sarahwiththetrains
      @sarahwiththetrains  Před rokem +2

      Thank you so much! Funnily enough even though I looked up the definition before starting the series I don't think I've ever explained what wherry means! It's a form of light passenger boat with that was commonly used around the Broads historically, which is why the logo of The Wherry Lines is a sailboat!
      Narration Sarah is an old mate who's invaluable when it comes down to these videos. Maybe I should give her a credit next time 😂
