I always find talking with patients and their families about completely non nursing related things puts me at ease, and relaxed the family/patient. Once that atmosphere is established it’s a lot easier to be confident because you are less nervous!

Man.... I was a train wreck when I was a new grad! I was always anxious (especially when talking to the MD's and giving report to other nurses). It's been a long journey, an upwards climb/struggle, and my confidence level has gotten so much better with patients and team members. I've learned that no one can ever be a perfect nurse- reiterates why it's so important to work in a great team.

I've heard from new graduate nurses to well seasoned nurses that you should never be too confident or 100% confident, because that's when mistakes happen or things get missed. Being confident is important but stay humble, stay alert and remember there is always something new to learn with nursing!

I'm still working on my confidence level as a new grad. My coworkers will tell me I'm doing good but I never know if they're just saying that so they don't kill my confidence or if they truly mean it.

I think even if you're not too confident in your skills, you should try to go in with a positive mindset. Know that everything you don't know are things that you will eventually know. I worry about all the things I don't know which only makes me feel more insecure in myself and my capabilities to take care of others, but it's something to keep in mind that all the more experienced nurses were once in our shoes and that one day we will be like them.

I think you make a really great point about the difference between confidence and cockiness- there's a very important line there! It's always good to come across as both confident AND humble, although that can sometimes be a tough line to walk.

Ashley, I want to thank you for all your tips! I have finally gotten into nursing school at 21 years old after a couple bumps in the road (took me longer than usual to finish classes and actually apply), and I have honestly taken your advice and used it many times! And I will for years to come as I venture out into the nursing world in just 2.5 short years! Thanks for being awesome, I really appreciate you! 💕

I’m relatively new still and for some reason I always worry about first interactions with my new patients family members and loved ones! I think maybe because I feel that I’m (most times) younger than majority of the family member and i get self conscious that they think I won’t be good enough/experienced enough! Hard to explain but that’s definitely an area where, like you said I really just need to fake that confidence throughout the first few encounters haha! I guess some of those self doubts probably go away with more and more experience ! Thank you for this vid!

Tee Lou I'm not even in a nursing program and that's something I'm worried about too. I guess you just have to reassure them that you will do your best and if you need any help you will get some to not compromise the condition of the patient

PREACH 🙌 best advice for even me today.
when I don't insert that catheter right the first time, I just ask someone to help you see what you're doing. We don't judge. Nurses eat their young is a true myth with the older generation, but honestly I never feel like I am in a situation where I can't ask a question or ask for help. im a medicine floor nurse like there are so many times I am totally faking it until I make it. People think im so confident because I'm next up to be charge, but I really take comfort in that I respect my patient enough to know when to ask questions.
We will not know the answer to every question. We will continue to just do the best we can. But can you really say you're doing your best if you're trying to do something independently you're not confident in, when you know there are people next to you who actually are independently good at it and can teach you something? I learn shit every day.
No nurse should be scared or afraid to ask for help. I am so lucky on my unit, but I know it's a problem.
My best advice- try it yourself. Its liberating If you honestly put in the best effort to get the female catheter or an IV. One of my most endorphin filled moments was getting my first saline lock in. But there is no shame in asking for help if you couldn't. Or couldn't as a x1 assist. Just do what you can. And try. There is no harm in trying. There is only harm when you didn't try hard enough.

I got my catheter today and it was the same feeling as getting flashback with an IV lol. Only it was urine haha. We don't outgrow that feeling, it always makes sense. Give yourself the opportunity to feel it yourself.

Thank you for choosing my video request and you have touched upon most of what’s effecting me to being a confident future nurse and I have been pushing myself as part of practicing to be confident, asking questions to build up knowledge and educating myself on specific procedures and their pre and post op care to be able to carry out specific care and share knowledge to patients xox

Where do you get your headbands? They are so cute! I'm so glad you made a video about confidence- that's the one thing that both my clinical instructors have said to me during my evaluations, I need to trust myself/ I know what I'm doing and a reminder to use my voice.
Also, I'm about a week away from finishing my second semester of nursing school and junior year - i'm doing an externship in the vascular ICU this summer and I was wondering if you have any suggestions or tips?

Hey Ashley I am going to be starting an ADN program this fall and I'm so excited!! I really want to get in the ICU out of school. I'm thinking of shadowing an ICU nurse at the hospital I want to work at during the program. Do you think this will help me get a job in the ICU?
