I really enjoyed this video. ❤️ I jumped on the hype train about 6 months ago and signed up to Fairyloot and Illumicrate subs as well as buying all the hardbacks that came out in the UK. A few months ago I realised most of the subs are books I wouldn’t read (only a few sounded interesting to me) and I was purchasing for an aesthetic. Also the books I felt I had to have were separate and was costing a lot of money. In the end I cancelled my subs and cancelled some pre-orders. It’s like with feeling like I have to read loads of books for my Goodreads - I’m just over it. Or I want to be over it 😂 such a refreshing video to see someone talking about the realities and massive cost of owning pretty covers xx

yay thank you for watching, i'm glad this video resonated with you! every now and then i see a book from a sub box that stuns me and i wish i got, but then i remember all of the other books that they have in their boxes that are pretty but im just not interested in the book! its definitely a struggle. i'm glad you were able to cancel some of your stuff and are feeling better 💕 we're def not alone in feeling this way and hopefully this vid will help to open up this type of conversation!

I loved this discussion! I’ve started a 8 month long book buying ban and it’s nice hearing other people with the same ideas and mindset on the subject matter talk about it. Subscribed! 🩷

I’m almost 30 and I think I’ve come to a similar realization. I’m lucky enough to have an incredible library so I use that primarily, and my Kindle is also great for KU and cheaper books. To be fair I can’t buy books anywhere because I am struggling really bad with money, but I’m hoping when that improves I still won’t buy many books. I kind of had my kick a few years ago with buying them, I’m fine with letting that go now.
Wishing you the best with your goals!♥️

thanks for watching and commenting 💕 i've def noticed in the past few years there are soooo many more expenses that pop up and book buying has just fallen to the bottom of my list. my fiance went back to school for a while and i really had to change my buying habits (but as you can tell from this video i still struggled which is why i've started to make even stricter rules lol) and once i let go of a lot of it, i realized that i didn't need it. sending hugs ♥

I think in different ways we all can relate to this video, I only just saved up enough to buy books and have been outside of bookish spaces for about 7 years and just came back I'm very shocked (but, not surprised)at how much the luxury/high-end marketing to book readers/collectors has become the norm... Of course as long as folks are not going into debt they can do whatever they want with their money order ten different book boxes, buy all the special editions, collect rare out of print books, get the most expensive bookcases etc... That said it's very telling times... I'm working class so trying to keep up wasn't going to happen I don't have the normal middle class income budget to even have one book subscription or try to get limited edition books that range on average $50-$100 much less try too also get regular books from other stores. Once I get these last several wish list books I saved up for I will only be buying 3 new books released that year and add to the series I do have.

i've definitely noticed a huge increase in expensive special editions and it honestly got so hard to keep up with! i used to want to buy every special edition that i could, because at the time there were not very many available. i definitely think a good strategy is what you said you're doing, where you have your wishlist items that are the absolute must haves, and then let everything else go. it also makes those books that much more special in your collection imo!!! best wishes on your book buying journey ♥

I'm trying the buying jar. If I see/ hear about a book I think I would like to have, I am writing the name on a piece of paper and putting it in a jar (rather than buying it immediately). I got a bit of an endorphin rush from putting the name on the paper and putting it in the jar. Isn't that kind of what we're looking for when book shopping? When I want to try something new, I'm planning to pull a name out of the jar and see whether I am still interested in purchasing it.

I agree with you there’s been some special edition that I wanted and eBay was charging them thousands dollars and Barnes special edition are pretty but I love the original edition so much better and you are doing awesome job about going on a book buy band

thank you, i appreciate it!!! it sucks missing out on a special edition but seeing the insane re-sale prices definitely makes me feel like it's not worth it to buy it haha. i used to love finding rare/out of print books for my collection but at the time an expensive purchase would have been maybe like $50 and now i've seen books go for upwards of $1-2k. sorry but it's just paper, that is rent money!!!!

As someone who reads a lot from Libby and still doesn’t know what to do with a lot of the books I have from my childhood I totally get this! I’d love to see you continue to chronicle this and give updates on how it’s going!

omg all of my childhood books are pretty much sitting in a box in my parent's attic!!! my mom actually just told me she wants to go through them when i'm home for christmas and i'm nervous bc i know i'm too attached to them despite them being in the attic for years??? lol. i will try to give updates but hopefully my updates are just that i've bought very minimal books and read through my physical tbr!!! maybe i can make a digital physical tbr list and share updates w shorts/tt/reels?? could be fun 😏💖

I find value in getting more library cards (either buy paying the yearly fee for the membership for a larger out of state library or asking for family/friend's library cards etc). Also many libraries let you request books for them to buy even on libby!
And for special editions that have bonus chapter etc. I try to find them online if i really want to read them
And for young people (age limits vary) brooklyn, seattle public, boston public have FREE ecards for getting around book bans

boston public library is one of my fave places in boston ♥ i have a few library cards from various places i've lived over the years but i def need to research more places where you can sign up for free so i have access to even more books hehe 😈 plus the library down the street from me is SOOOO pretty and has a cute cafe, i want to start leveraging it not only for books but as a cute workspace away from home!
