Avoid Visiting This Place in Ho Chi Minh City 🙅‍♂️ Go HERE Instead! SAIGON, VIETNAM 🇻🇳

  • Vietnamese visit here instead for authentic local experience, NOT Ben Thanh Market ❌
    When in Saigon, you must go to these 2 local markets - instead of Cho Ben Thanh. Ben Thanh was too much like a tourist trap to us. At least 30% more expensive than nearby local markets. 💸
    Watch this video and decide which market is for you when you visit HCMC
    Tan Dinh Church (aka Pink Church ⛪️) is also nearby so why not visit here?

    I had visited Saigon last year and I had one of the best time of my life there and I love the food tour by motorbike from all of their Districts, and I always haggle my prices down at the Ben Thanh market in District #1 to my price. And the Durian is the most popular fruit there and their famous egg coffee is also so deliciously good.

    • @ChovyTravel

      Honestly, we tried their egg coffee and we weren’t a fan of it. It’s definitely an acquired taste.

      Total BS about MSG being unsafe, created by the west known as the "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome" in the 50's. Google it and chk FDA. Glutamate is a natural compound (amino acid) found in cheese, mushrooms, meats, tomatoes, etc... In case u don't know, a bag of Dorritos chips contains lots of MSG, chk the label.

    Everything in district 1 is expensive due to rents, rent for shophouse cost $300-1000 USD/mth around Saigon, but can start at $10.000 to $30.000 USD a month in district 1. Stalls in regular markets cost couple thousand USD, but A small stall in Ben Thanh market 20yrs ago cost 1-2 billion VND ($50.000 - $100.000), imagine how much they be today. If you bargain 90% off in district 1, they will shut down their businesses.
    Wet markets open very early around 6am to 11am, because meats are slaughtered midnights and sold on the same day, no refrigeration, household items are cheap in supermarket vs the typical markets, because sometimes they buy from the supermarket to sell at the markets, but fresh meat, fish, fruits and vegetable's in supermarkets no matter how fresh cannot beat wet markets.
    Chợ Phạm Văn Hai market in Tan Binh district, the first concentration of Koreans area in Saigon 30yrs ago, used to be the butcher market early as 3am. so meat are 1 day fresh.
    Northern Vietnam known for their lychee and longan, southern Vietnam known for dragon fruits with 3 different colours, white, red and yellow. During the pandemic they couldn't sell them, so restaurants had to rescue by making dragon fruit noodles, dragon fruit bread, dragon fruit rice paper etc...and in VN they have sticky jack fruit "mít tố nữ"

      @ChovyTravel  Před 2 měsíci

      Wish we went earlier for the wet market. Next time for sure we’re going early. Really poor planning on our part 😔
      Now we’re gonna have to try the Lychee and Dragonfruit for sure next time we go 😃

    tbh I agree with the sentiment that if you're a tourist, don't try to buy stuffs in Ben Thanh market as they're kinda expensive and the quality is really not there. I've been to every single Michelin recommended pho in HCMC. Some are good, others not really, Pho Hoa is the latter (They used to be decent a long time ago, but it got into their head after Michelin rating, a bit overpriced, and broth is too sweet (typical pho Nam style, I prefer pho Bac style). My top 3 from Michelin are Pho Viet Nam, Pho Chao, and Pho Le; but my fav is actually not on Michelin, a local joint in D4, Pho Mong. BTW, no pho in HCMC is a Michelin-star restaurant; they are either Bib Gourmand or recommended. Currently, there is only 1 Michelin-star restaurant in HCMC, AnAn Saigon.
