    Excellent review video Mark ! Really top notch. Such a joy to watch. Your reviews and the way you display it to the side of the screen and describe in pleasant detail just seems to answer every question that pops in my head. When you unpackaged this my wife just had to laugh as she heard me loudly say OMG ! I know from my Chieftain that Vikings Blade quality and design is just fabulous. So when I saw this review it’s a no brainer that I will just have to get one ! 👍🏼

      Thanks very much!:) IUhad anoter smooth shave with it this moring. Despite it's lack of any sort of numbers or incremental settings, I still find it very easy to dial in and replicate close shaves. I simply give the adjustment collar an 1/8 or 1/4 turn and start shaivng. I'm also using the straight comb on the neck and upper lip areas and this really helps to smooth out the shave. Absolutely no irritation!:)

    Just got mine in today. Got a decent shave, but some irritation in places like under the chin and the neck area, probably because I had the setting too high and I used a Clifton blade. Those darn things are pretty aggressive in my not so learned opinion. Still, looking forward to future shaves with the Crusader! Stay safe and be well, Mark, cheers! 🍻🍻
    *Edit* To be perfectly honest, I think the Parker 91 R Heavyweight razor has an equivalent weight to the weight of the Crusader.

      Mark Szorady the razor has its disadvantages. It has the Base plate made of zamak. The internals are steel and handle is Brass. That's what I read. But for its price it is a very looking and functioning razor. Had it been completely brass or a combination of brass and steel even for 50$ it would be worth it. For the current price I feel it's very good. May have some issues but the looks, the packaging etc makes it good over all.

    Hi Mark. Gotta disagree with you on this one. In two ways. First, I don`t want to have to guess when I turn the dial what aggression I`m having. With numbers, you get a reference point. Once you get the shave down pat and find the settings that work for you, I want to go to those settings and be at the same places day after day. No guess work. Second, I want the same design comb on both sides of the razor. Don`t want to have to remind myself which side I`m using to get the feel or aggression that I want. Oh well, differences of opinion make the world go around. lol Thanks once again for the video.

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  Před 6 lety +3

      Brian, thank you for the comments and giving a very kind rebuttal.:) I appreciate it.:)
      Your comments are valid. I certainly understand how some folks want a number or hash mark to see where the adjustment level is. In my case, due to my razor rotation, and having several adjustable razors, I simply can't keep straight which razor shaves at which setting.:) Perhaps if I had only one adjustable, it's be easier to recall the settings.:) But, not having a number for reference really does free me a bit. Additionally, I've found that just giving it about an 1/8 (or thereabouts) of a turn each time, gives me about 9 settings along the way. So, it I do four 1/8 turns, I'm at about a setting of four. Would numbers help? Yes, for some. For me, I turn and go.:)
      The asymmetrical head works quite well for me. I understand how it may be an acquired taste for others. However, I've always been intrigued by the approach. I've seen one other razor brand use this design. Again, I use it exactly as I describe in the video. When I'm at an aggressive setting on the sculpted comb side, I merely turn it around and get a bit more mild shave. I shaved with it this morning using Vikings Blade Sandalwood and Cedar shave cream. I used the more aggressive side on my cheek and then flipped to the more mild side to shave my neck.:) It works well for me.:) As the saying goes, YMMV.:)
      Again, Brian, I appreciate your very thoughtful comments. It helps viewers on this channel to make an informed purchase.:)

    I'm a crazy masochist who decided to get this as my first safety razor with semi agreesive blades. Do I regret my decision? Yes and no lol. I nicked myself an embarrassing number of times, but I love learning the unique adjustment feature and how crazy smooth my shave comes out! I was never able to get a bbs shave on my chin and mustache with my Gillette Fusion 5 because the razor burn would hit before I can get close to a bbs shave. I still need more practice with my neck though.

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  Před 5 lety

      I'd imagine there'll be a learning curve for those diving right in with this razor.:)
      Frankly, I love this razor!
      Here's how I use it: I open the blade gap all the way, then give it a 1/4 turn (sometimes 1/8, sometimes 1/2 depending on the blade) downward. Then, I do my first pass with the sculpted comb side. For my neck, I simply flip to the straight bar side.
      For the second pass, I usually give it anywhere from a 1/8 to 1/4 turn downward again and shave the same way. Depending on the blade, I may or may not flip to the straight bar side. Part of the attraction for me is feeling my way through the shave.:)
      If I need a third pass, I simply close the gap all the way and then turn it upward 1/4 or so to open it up a bit. Then do this final pass against the grain with the straight bar side.
      Give that method a go and let me know how it works out for you.:)

    • @Dcc357
      @Dcc357 Před 5 lety

      @@MarkSzorady I've learned that I can use clock positions. The dial does not turn a full 360 from the lowest setting. It stops at about the 10 o'clock position. This makes the 12 o'clock position the most mild, and the 10 o'clock position the most aggressive.
      I've been using the 8 o'clock position lately, and it's okay until the 3rd pass on my neck. I may just have to dial it down a tad and/or use the flat side more. I'm still very happy with this razor. The longer handle is great for my huge hands, the weight is nice, I love how the razor head is not bulky, and I don't care about the exposed blade ends. I'm gonna try and use the comb side first, and then use the flat side for my 2nd and 3rd passes. This should be easier on my skin. It's amazing mow much sharper these DE blades are compared to cartridge ones.

      @ Vullion Group AU Hi, I have a few questions if you don't mind. As you said the razor is made out of solid brass, you mean every single piece on the razor is made of brass as in its 100% razor made of brass? Asking this because usually manufacturers have issues with getting the head parts just right when they try to make them in brass so they resort to switching to zinc metal. My other question is from what I can see from the video the razor does not have lather holes or is it just me? For example the Parthenon razor also does not have lather holes and its not an issue for people that shave daily, but if a day is skipped and the whiskers are longer they tend to clog up the razor. Nice looking razor and if its 100% brass at that price tag is a winner but curious about the lather holes, thanks in advance, nice looking razor.

    Hey Mark,
    I am thinking of picking up an adjustable safety Razor. Just a quick history for myself, I have been shaving with DE for 2-3 years now with mild-medium razors, Merkur & Edwin Jagger. I am looking for Medium-aggressive DE that is adjustable. I heard Gillette Fatboy is one of the top adjustable safety Razor. If you have the Fatboy, can you tell me what I should go for? whats your thoughts?

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  Před 5 lety +1

      Brian, I'm familiar with the Gillette Fatboy. Unfortunately, I don't own one. I do own a couple of Gillette Slim razors. The Gillette Slim was introduced after the Fatboy. More on this in a bit.:)
      Fatboy razors on Ebay are fetching premium prices. I've seen them listed for upwards of $250.00 (including original case and blades) and as low as $50.00 to $60.00. A factor in this high price is, as I see it, the popularity of the traditional wet shave exploding in popularity. As a consequence, the prices for Fatboys (and some other vintage razors) are also going up. Considering the Fatboy was only produced for about three years, we can only guess how many are still floating around. www.gilletteadjustable.com/fatboy.html
      This limited number may also be a factor in it's high price. No doubt, it's a prized acquisition for any razor collection. But you want to shave with it, not park it in a museum.:)
      Now, the Gillette Slim is what I have. www.gilletteadjustable.com/slim.html
      Since it was produced for a longer period of time, there are many, many more out there floating around. Hence, the price isn't as high.
      This is a terrific adjustable razor. I've done a few videos using it: czcams.com/video/avX_SlOUUD8/video.html and czcams.com/video/cN6JSLV15tw/video.html
      As I mentioned in the second video, the Slim was featured in the 1964 James Bond film, "Goldfinger." Once I discovered this little factoid, my pursuit of a Fatboy ended.:) I had the razor used by James Bond!:) What more do I need?:) BTW, mine is a J3 which means it was produced in the third quarter of 1964.:) The same year as the movie!:)
      The first three settings (1, 2, and 3) are super mild. The next three (4, 5, and 6) are various grades of medium aggression. 6 is getting up there for me. So, I usually stay at four..maybe even 5 if I have a good protective lather.:) The last three settings (7, 8, and 9) are aggressive. I've cranked it up to 7 once or twice.
      It has substantial heft, is robustly made, feels great in the hand, and simply gives a wonderful shave. Plus, you have a better chance of finding one in very good shape at a more affordable price.:)
      As I mentioned in the videos, the razor adjusts by clicking through the settings. Make sure that you slightly open the doors to take the tension off the spring when you do make an adjustment.
      About a year or so ago, I had a chance at buying a like-new Fatboy (with original case) from a seller on Craig's List for about $30.00. It belonged to the seller's father. Well, I just couldn't take advantage of him like that. I gave him the history of the razor and it's real value. I told him that he should really hang on to it (since it belonged to his dad). If he didn't use it, hand it down to his son. I'm so very glad I still have my late father's Gillette Super Sped razor. I can't tell you the number of memories I have, as a little boy, walking past the bathroom seeing my dad shave with that razor getting ready to take my mom out for the evening (move,dinner, etc.). Anyhow, Fatboy or not, I didn't want to deprive someone else of that same connection.
      So, it all depends on what you want to spend. I'd imagine the Fatboy shaves the same as the Slim. Jut a guess. But, really, the Slim is a terrific razor.:) James Bond uses it!:)
      But, if you REALLY want a Fat handled adjustable razor, and cannot afford a vintage Gillette Fatboy, then Vikings Blade has the answer. They just introduced this: amzn.to/2Ocw7eI
      Fat handle, adjustable, good price, and brand spanking new!:)
      I hope to review it soon.:)

      @@hyung9i Well, even though I haven't even tried it yet, I'd go with the New Vikings blade Emperor adjustable. I know their track record. Their razors are stellar.:) VERY well made.:)
      Having said this, I'd also look at this scenario: A mint, like-new Fatboy is going to be at least $200.00, easily. With that $200.00, I could get BOTH the Emperor and the Slim.:)
      I'll add one more caveat to this.:) The Crusader is a very advanced razor, IMHO.:) Even Vikings Blade recommends that it is for shaving enthusiasts. "AGGRESSIVE-to-MILD continuous adjustment band with NO markings for a fluid shaving experience for enthusiasts." The absence of a numbering/setting system on the collar makes it a more tactile approach to the adjustable shave. Those wanting their FIRST adjustable razor, should probably consider the Emperor. I myself had a lot of experience with other adjustables before I was introduced to the Crusader and that experience made a difference.:)
      Again, having said all this, I love the Vikings Blade brand. their razors have a high quality build from premium materials.:) And, I'm gonna use my Crusader tomorrow morning.:):)

    I bought this razor after seeing this review. I got the razor today and I haven't shaved with it yet, I'm thinking of returning it due to its closed head/base design. Where will the shaving cream and hair go? Did it clog with you? Was your review a paid one?

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  Před 6 lety +1

      No, I had no issues with clogging at all. In fact, I used it this morning with a brushless shave cream which are notorious for clogging razors. I had no issues with this type of shave cream, either. (I'm uploading the video review as I type this.)
      I was not paid. I really like Vikings Blade's products.:) Their Chieftain razor is the one that brought me back to the traditional wet shave.
      If you have any issues or questions, I encourage you to reach out to Vikings blade with our concerns. They are very receptive to their customers.

      I ended up keeping the razor and have been using it since I received it. This razor is becoming one of my favorite. I shaved with cremo, proraso, naked armor soap, and giovanni sensitive shave cream. The razor didn't even clog once, even when I intentionally left some proraso dehydrate a bit on my neck. I would totally recommend this razor. It shaves great, it looks gorgeous, and it feels like a heavy duty razor. I also love the asymmetrical head. Thank you @Mark Szorady for introducing it to us.

    So, no numbers or dots to indicate what level it is set on? This is not an open comb on the one side, that is scalloped. The other side is a straight bar similar to Vintage Gillette razors. Having been in Marketing, they fall short on the description of the razor on Amazon.

      Yeah these guys are old salesmen from Oz I doubt they know anything about our kind of marketing anyway, which is a pity because it gives an unnecessarily negative vibe on the internet where everyone seems to be an expert without even buying the product like this Flash Boredom guy above. Wtf buddy, you are obsessed with trashing this brand on this channel. You have not used or purchased any of this brand products yet you go to every single video of Mark Szorady, admit that you have not used them before and then trash talk them like an expert, and then promote the Weishi or Baili clone. We get it, you can’t afford anything more than $5 but there is no need to be that obsessed. I am not a fan of this company’s marketing either, but you really stink dude. Or are you a salesman for Weishi/Baili?
      So what if another experienced reviewer says it’s a decent razor? I doubt you have more than $5 to afford it anyway and you’re gonna come up and trash talk that reviewer like how you always do.
      Mark, keep on doing what you’re doing. I know you’re not a salesman for this company. You have reviewed many other brands in details (proof that you are not a shill but probably just a very happy customer of Viking) and I have fortunately learnt a lot from you on this journey. Ignore the trolls.
      By the way, I am eyeing on the Merkur Futur but this razor looks more interesting. If I can choose between zamak and brass I would always go for brass. What do you say is a more suitable razor for someone who has always been using a very mild razor before? (A Feather Seki AS-D2).

      @Jill Snoddon, hello Jill. I am one of the people behind this product. Thank you for pointing out the shortfalls of our marketing. You are absolutely right. We are pretty horrible when it comes to marketing so everything is just impromptu and inhouse. Plus, given the tradeoff between the maximum number of words we're allowed to type and how to not put customers to sleep, I get pretty hopeless. I would absolutely love to hear your opinions on how to improve our image though since you are a marketing professional. Would you be able to send us a message via our website enquiry form ? I am very chatty and always up for a good conversation. In fact everything we build today is based on suggestions of customers like you and I always try to improve as much as I can, and please as many customers as possible (although that's not very realistic). Thank you and waiting for your email Jill.

      I find it highly suspect to say this is not for beginners. I don't like or appreciate overblown accolades on a review of something that it may not be. I don't see anything out of the ordinary to indicate a beginner could not use it.

      Hello @Johnny Unitus, thank you for your opinion. I'm the person behind this product. Before the launch we tested this razor with quite a few experienced shavers here who have collected safety razors for many decades. Some are daily shavers, some shave every few days. So far none of them have reported the clogging issue.
      I believe it's the way our guards & the ridges on the scalloped side are designed that helps minimise soap & hair buildup, thus making it quite hard to clog.
      Of course this does not represent the whole market as our tester group doesn't include starters or users who are switching from disposable cartridge Mach or Fusion razors. Hence, we tried to let future customers know that this design has been tested and works really well on experienced users.
      Thank you for your opinion and if you have any suggestions to help improve our future models, please please please contact me directly here: vikingsblade.com/pages/contact
      Regards,
      Rob

    Are their razors plated brass, or plated zamak?

      Their product page states "Premium high end materials." vikingsblade.com/collections/staff-picks/products/the-crusader-adjustable-safety-razor
      You may wish to contact them directly to get detailed information.
      The Crusader is a VERY well made razor!:) If they say they are using premium high end materials, I believe them. Because, when holding in my hand and shaving with it, it feels every bit the high end razor.:)
      When comparing all the razors in my collection, the Crusader has the most heft...and this exceeds even the Merkur Futur adjustable razor. Even with this heft, the balance and handling make for an enjoyable shave.:)
      Yes, some manufacturers use Zamak exclusively, others incorporate Zamak along with other materials when crafting their razors. Some of my razors have brass handles and Zamak plated razor heads. Some of my vintage razors are all brass, other vintage razors are brass and aluminum.
      I recently reviewed a razor where a combination of materials was used. The handle is brass, the base plate is stainless, and the top cap is pewter.
      Bottom line for any razor...does it feel nice and balanced in the hand and give you a great shave?:)

      The traditional wet shave is becoming quite popular again. Not only is it affordable, it's healthier than other forms of shaving and good for the skin.:)
      In previous generations, the wet shave was a practice handed down from father to son. For those who missed this instruction, there's CZcams. Many, many of my viewers like and appreciate the shaves and discussion. They discover new products, different approaches to the wet shave and, when the time is right, will be better informed to once again instruct the next generation in this wonderful morning ritual.:)
      As far as my videos being "ridiculous and in fact a bit disturbing," I'd like to remind you that when Brick and Mortar stores ruled the landscape, men and women could walk into any department store and see a sales representative demonstrate any number of cosmetic products. Customers would also receive valuable information regarding grooming practices with these products. As the public's shopping habits transition, CZcams has stepped in as a sort of virtual demonstration center. Folks can watch videos, see the method or product, and if they wish, be taken to a web site/page where they can purchase the product. Other than the method of delivering the message, It's no different than those Brick and Mortar department stores of years ago.
      "If your morning shave isn't the best part of your day, you're doing it wrong."
