This tutorial was so well done! I was entertained while learning how to use the device. I'm a 58-year-old woman who is starting a podcast and needed to know how to get going without a lot technical lingo. So thanks!

That’s great news am happy for you. I have the Tascam Dr 07 mk II and it’s remarkable. It doesn’t use XLR the big cable at the base . But still an incredible sound audio recorder . The reviews ive read about this X40 are brilliant. Good luck. When your PC is ready please say. I’d love to listen

dude... I just purchased this device to use for capturing ambient noise / percussion sounds to use in my music.. there were no good tutorials on best practices or how to set it up. I went into this video thinking here we go... a student project that will be amateur and low effort.. boy how WRONG I was. This is 100% the best video made for the DR40X out there. Super well scripted, edited professionally, exactly what a new user needs. I am beyond impressed and look forward to future videos. Cheers from Canada!

great tutorial. if i may add, to transfer the file to the computer, you don't necessarily need to take out the sd card. better to plug in thru the usb port and transfer from there.
also if you can, please do a video comparing the dr40x vs x8.

Great video. Thank you. I bought the DR-40X and very rarely use it. The reason to buy it was to spread the built-in mics, put it on a table in the centre of my music room, and face it towards my hifi speakers. This way, I assume it will record audio the way my speakers actually sound in person. I could take a line level out of my hifi system and directly plug it into the DR-40X but that would just give me a hi-res audio file on the SD card, right?. In order to share files with friends and family with music the way I hear it in my room, what best way would you suggest? I have 4 different pairs of speakers, and I want to share how they all differently sound while playing the same music from the same source. Your thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This was sooooo helpful. Thank you. I have one question iI bet you can answer. How does one label the recorded files? I see the choice to enter a date or word but can't figure out HOW to type that in?? Thx in advance!

I'm happy you found the video helpful! Files on the field recorder can't be named individually from within the device, however you can set a prefix word to go in front of all files whenever you record. When opening the menu you can navigate to "OTHERS" and then to "FILE NAME." The "TYPE" setting dictates whether you want each file to have its date on it or be labeled with your set prefix word. Once TYPE is set to word you can move down to the "WORD" setting and individually set your letters. Hope that helps!

Can you plug that XLR cable straight into the Tascam direct from Mic? And record sound voice etc. thanks I throughly enjoyed your video review the best so far

Glad to hear the video was helpful! The Tascam does work plugged directly into a mic with an XLR cable. This video was recorded plugged into a Shure SM58 and its been my go to setup for all tutorials on this channel. The internal microphones are great, though the ability to use microphones on the go without an interface is priceless to me :)
