    I myself have a 2020 Mercury 3.5 hp. Four stroke and I am having issues with my plastic prop ventilating and spinning up on revs . I am also having carburetor issues at low idle...it sometimes does and sometimes doesn't idle it cuts off. So I also noticed this kit as well and I am grateful that you installed it as I am interested in doing the same. I also noticed that after installing the kit it may be a good idea to add an inline fuel filter. I noticed that this model didn't come with one from factory. All on all I hope that this will help my West Marine 10 ft. Tender. Thanks for the demonstration.🙂

      The Tohatsu version of this outboard at least has a inline filter inside the hose which you can't see! If you try to fit an inline filter it won't run as it doest have a fuel pump to pull the fuel through I tried it and it simply cut out and wouldn't run.

    This upgrade carb is IDENTICAL to the OEM 3.5. Throat bores, all the jets, everything. Installed it and tested on exactly identical glassy conditions and both times maxed out at 8-9mph. No more revs, nothing. So i eventually said screw it and bought a 5hp merc that weighed about 15 lbs heavier (no big deal) and now the dingy does a solid 13-14 mph in windy choppy water even. Huge difference. This Ready Set Boat carb/prop "upgrade" is total marketing snake oil.

    • @jviera1298
      @jviera1298 Před 4 měsíci

      This is absolutely false. The venturi is larger and the carburetor is certainly not the same as the stock 3.5hp. Other customers have clocked higher speeds after the upgrade and also frequently comment on the acceleration improvement talked about in this customers video. Also, if your name is Terry Kannedy, then you never purchased this kit from us. I see no orders under your name.

    I have seen a lot of comments of this motor not idling smooth. One thing I have found is that this motor does not like Star-Tron very well. If your mixture of Star-Tron is too rich, at idle it will almost stall and then jump up in RPM's to a high idle. Use Star-Tron very sparingly and that will solve some of the idle problems.

Hopefully the upgrade will fix that hesitation. You mentioned the cause could be to lean on fuel/ air mix. Should i try to increase 1/2 turn on pilot (2 turns from stop). Also noticed the pilot mix adj screw is on the motor side, can you adjust with the tank raised from the mount in order to hear idle vs pull carb off again, if that makes sense? No, I've haven't had any overheating issues. I have made a 10 mile trip up the Navasota River with 3 people in the boat with no problems. Make sure the pump is working properly. You should have a strong stream of water when idling. If not replace the water pump impeller. Not that you have; But, Never run the motor out of the water. Not even for a few seconds. This will immediately damage the water pump.

I also think the prop has less pitch, in of itself will increase rpm’s under a load. I would like to buy an aluminum prop to replace my plastic one, but I will stick with the 7.0 pitch. I really believe the upgraded carb does nothing for engine performance, and the increased rpm’s under load has everything to do with the reduced pitch prop….IMO

    Thanks for a very informative video. I'm trying to decide between this motor, the Yamaha 2.5 or Suzuki 2.5. I prefer the Mercury on paper, even though the motor is larger and heavier. The extra 1 hp seems worth it, and this kit you installed makes it all the more appealing. My main concern is the high number of negative reviews on these smaller Mercuy/Tohatsu motors due mainly to finicky carb and fuel issues. Seems to be a serious reliability problem even for owners who take extra precautions.
    Have you experienced any of these issues, and do you think the upgraded carb effectively addresses the problem? Also, have you found that the kit improved midrange smoothness and/or noise to any extent? Still liking the motor overall?

    • @LifeisaHighwayRV
      @LifeisaHighwayRV  Před 3 lety +3

      The stock carb isn't jetted very well. But the engine does run OK on it, but it has a hesitation on low end that's very annoying. I recommend the 3.5 Mercury and the upgrade kit for it. The Upgraded Carb was a definite FIX. It made an major change in my motors thrust and top end RPM's. I'm very happy with it.

      Yes it's perfect for the 2.5hp. Better off buying the 6hp carb from them and the prop separately. The carb is a Chinese Mikuni clone which seems to work well. I'm using it as an aux engine so I also changed the decals from Tohatsu to Suzuki.

    I have a 2.5 and a 3.5. I wanted to do this 5hp upgrade to the 3.5 I have but the 3.5 is WAY older whereas my 2.5 is almost new..... When I read all of the specs on the 2.5 vs. the 2.5, EVERYTHING besides the carburetor is the exact same specs as the 3.5. Pistons, bore, crank... everything.... so couldn't I theoretically install one of these 5hp carbs on the 2.5 and get the same result as you did? I can't seem to figure out ANYTHING that would prevent the 2.5 from handling the 3.5. I've actually used the 3.5 carb on my 2.5 (too lazy to clean the 2.5 so I swapped it for the 3.5 in a pinch) and it ran stronger.... so I'm thinking this 5hp carb will be even better. Thoughts? Also, I already have an aluminum prop because the kelp ripped my plastic one to shreds...

    • @LifeisaHighwayRV
      @LifeisaHighwayRV  Před rokem +2

      I'm not 100% sure on this. However, putting the kit on the 2.5 may not have the same results. You can try it and if it doesn't work or provide the best results, just put on the 3.5 and try that. Sorry I couldn't provide the answer you needed. But I don’t have any experience with the 2.5.

      @@Arian_orta Sure did! Granted, it's only 1 pony added, which in the water isn't a huge difference. But I did notice it on a glass water no-wind comparison. What I'm doing now is drilling out the main jet .0001 at a time, popping it back in and testing for more balance but comparing all other things like acceleration smoothness, idle, proper plug burn and of course top end, making sure to keep RPMs in mind. I'm also still using the stock 7p plastic prop that came on the 2.5 platform. I believe it's the same prop that comes on the 3.5 anyway.
