  • Aurora's 3 Fairies Were The Secret Villains Of The Entire Movie? | Disney's Sleeping Beauty
    For being one of the most influential villains in Disney's history, Maleficent was never really given a strong backstory, and a lot of fans have been left wondering why the Mistress of Evil became that way. However, after reading through the novel, “Mistress of All Evil: A Tale of the Dark Fairy,” by Serena Valentino it’s clear that it wasn’t entirely her fault. In fact, Maleficent might have made for a very strong and very GOOD fairy had it not been for Aurora’s 3 Fairy Guardians, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather.

    Maleficent never knew kindness because hardly anyone showed it to her. I can relate to Maleficent because I’ve bottled up my feelings just like her. But of course I didn’t turn into a dragon. It was a big mistake of the three “good” fairies to be so cruel to her. She was more powerful than them individually but in the end those three and Prince Phillip defeat her.

    actually even without reading the book, if you watch sleeping beauty carefully and keep in mind that maleficent is an all powerful fae (and to not invite her is like inviting everyone in the royal family except for the one with the highest position, a complete and obvious insult), you would notice merryweather is also part of the reason maleficent cursed aurora in the first place. merryweather should have kept her mouth shut instead of adding insult to injury and giving maleficent more reason to want to curse baby aurora as punishment for their parents' faux pas, funny thing is if the king had not seconded merryweather and apologized for insulting her i think there's a chance maleficent may not have cursed aurora to die, there's a chance a curse would still be in effect but not as permanent as death

    • @moonbunny24
      @moonbunny24 Před rokem +28

      I have watched Sleeping Beauty carefully and without trying to find contrarian "Maleficent was right actually" evidence. The reason they didn't invite Maleficent is because THAT'S HOW SHE IS. She is canonically petty and spiteful. Which is perfectly exemplified in the scene where Phillip is in the dungeon, chained up and Maleficent taunts him while cackling just because she can. We also learn right after the party that she kills Flora's best flowers every year. These things aren't there for nothing. She is characterized as someone who likes to start things and anger people just because she can. Someone who misuses her powers specifically to be hurtful. You don't call yourself "the mistress of all evil" if you're a decent person who just got their feelings hurt.
      It was never about Merriweather insulting her. Actually, Maleficent insults Merriweather first when she refers to her and the other fairies as "the rabble." The king also never says anything and Maleficent curses Aurora when the queen asks "And you're not offended, your exellency?" after Maleficent says she's leaving. That's the ONLY thing anyone says to her after Merriweather says she wasn't wanted there. And then Maleficent decides the appropriate response is *murdering an infant.*
      It's almost like you wouldn't want to invite someone like that to be around your child or something.

      @@moonbunny24 So right! I absoloutely agree! They are turning now the movie upside down. If Maleficent could be imagined differently with anyone, perhaps with something like Darth Vader, perhaps as fallen fairy, and all would be good with a kind of such explanation. I would have preferred indeed some twist for Maleficent's origin and perhaps also a kind of redemption arc - BUT It's not good to make the fairies or the king the actual villians and reveal the villian as the hero of the tale. They should stop victimizing the REAL bully/villian. I know this is the same case as in real class, I had been victim of bullying, yet, by teachers, I was questioned why I would make others bully me. -and this is the crazyness. In the original tale, the last fairy had been not that evil, but in the Disney story-building they made a devilish villian out of her, so lowering the villianess is nor the problem, but why doesn't this work without blaming the good fairies ( and I would never forgive "Disney" what they did with the beautiful song "Once upon a dream" from Walt Disney's good old times....)

      I thought it was extremely mean for Merryweather to tell Maleficent that she “wasn’t wanted.” No one ever wants to hear that and who can blame Maleficent for how she reacted. yes because she took the time to actually make the villains into real people with feelings and give them actual pasts that explain why they became who they are... Disney seems to enjoy making villains to just be villains without explaining all the pain and suffering they may have gone through growing up... I think I knew that those three fairies weren't good in the original Disney animated movie. It was the blessing ceremony at Aurora's birth that gave away the darkness inside at least one of them. Merriweather always felt like the darker of the three sisters to me, in certain circumstances throughout the movie she would say or do something that would make me give her the stink eye. The first was how she treated Maleficent, after the green fairy had actually come to find out why she hadn't been given an invitation to the ceremony--which, mind you, everyone was supposed to be invited, not everyone, except HER--and Merriweather said what I thought was possibly the rudest thing you could say to someone in that situation. "You weren't wanted."
    From then on, I couldn't trust her. A truly good fairy wouldn't have said something like that so carelessly for no reason other than being a complete b-word, if you catch my drift. And I don't think anyone likes those mean girls you have in high school.

    In one early version of Sleeping Beauty, part of an Arthurian romance Perceforest, the fairy godmothers are Greco-Roman goddesses. In this tale, a princess named Zellandine falls in love with a knight named Troylus. The goddesses' names were Lucina (aka Juno), Venus and Sarra (aka Minerva) who enchant the princess into a magical sleep with a flax thorn while Troylus is on his way to prove to the king Perceforest that he is a knight who is worthy of Zellandine's hand. But when the knight returns to the kingdom, Troylus finds his beloved in eternal sleep and because he believes the princess is dead Troylus sleeps with her for the night. The next morning Zellandine gives birth to a child taht draws from her finger the flax that caused her sleep and Zellandine, now awake, realizes from the ring Troylus left her that he was the father. When Troylus returns again he finds Zellandine alive and marries her. The lesson of the story was that if you are a Christian, don't take Greco-Roman goddesses as your child's godparents, because they can be envious and jealous in religious matters.

While I did enjoy the Live action made about her it was not the same as in the original Disney Sleeping Beauty. She is the Disney Queen of Evil, Personally I see more of a Drag Queen in her then a female queen, but that just makes me like her even more. Like the Wicked Witch of the West, She doesn't need a reason to be herself. She just is and that makes her a good character. I didn't like the three weak "good" fairies. But to repaint them to fit an agenda is still not a good thing. They where incompetent in the movie, they don't need to be bullies also. In the original movie she was a queen of a land, evil, but a land none the less. They should of invited her to the christening, but why would you invite the "Devil" to a baptism? So they don't curse you or course.......Also next time you watch the original animation watch the Queen and her interactions....

Also Maleficent and Aurora's mother were in the same room the night Maleficent cursed Aurora. It didn't need all of the fan fiction, no matter how well written. Medieval court politics explain her behavior quite well. A christening of a king's child, and you don't invite the most powerful person in the kingdom (or adjacent kingdoms)? Of course you offended her terribly. And got a terrible curse in return.
    Imagine if they HAD invited her. Her gifts would have been incredibly powerful just to show up the other "rabble" fairies. Court politics are all about one upmanship.
