  • The procedure is approximately the same on e36, e34 525i, and I6 e39 models too. The e46 m3's water pump is different, however, much of this procedure applies too.

    Had this very thing happen on my 325i last week - oscillating pump, accompanied by very slow coolant loss, chuffing noise under the bonnet, and a strong smell while idling.
    Being very experienced with this engine, it took me less than an hour to swap out.

    Excellent tutorial. I just changed out the water pump on our 2003 330xi. Bought 4-inch bar stock and made my fan clutch hub tools. Repair garages in my area were going to charge $725, I did it - including a new serp belt - for about $120, including coolant and a quart of oil. Runs great. Took about 4 full hours, but half of that was making the hub tools.

      Remove the cap on the tensioner, insert the proper tool (8mm or external torx + ratchet/breaker bar) into the tensioner, and rotate clockwise (verify!) to relieve belt tension. The belt will come right off.

      +Cas Neijnens They're wonderful to work on. In all honestly, the water pump is a half hour job if you have some mechanical experience and all goes well. I just did mine on my 323i a couple weeks ago and unfortunately it didn't go so well; the water pump replacement went smoothly (and you don't even have to remove the airbox in that car!), but the belt tensioner failed at the same time and was hard to source a replacement for. Again, once I had a new tensioner, the actual task of replacing the tensioner and reinstalling the belt was VERY easy.

      @areitu Před 8 lety +1

      +Cas Neijnens I highly recommend them. My E46 ZHP sedan was the easiest car I've ever serviced, and that includes older Japanese cars that people would normally associate with that.
      Something else I did, when I had to burp the cooling system in my ZHP, was that I used the hidden OBC menu to display the water temperature, and watch that to see when the thermostat opens.

      +Cas Neijnens You're right and It amazes me how people are so scared to touch these Brands. On my 06 525i my Belt came off while driving which also indicates that I'm most likely must change the Idler Pulley and Tensioner. I called local mechanics that work on BMW's...I was told it was close to $400 so imagine BMW dealership. All i did was buy the parts for $97 in total on ebay and saw one video on youtube, and I did it in 20 minutes. SOOOO EASYYYY!!! it was literally one screw out, replace, one screw in.....every since that I do everything myself.... I LOVE BMW!!!! =)

    Just a tip, next time you have to drain the coolant for any reason. Buy a big oil drain pan from Walmart for 15-20 bucks and go to bottom of the car and look for a blue drain plug on the bottom of the radiator to drain the coolant so its not so messy and get coolant on the belts.

    • @Cyrix2k
      @Cyrix2k  Před 9 lety

      Yes, this works great for a full drain. We didn't want to bother with lifting the car and completely draining the system. I would have used the drain plug if I was in my garage.

    My water pump died on me. When I took the fan out to test the pulleys, I noticed the water pump pulley isn't spinning freely. Should I replace the pulley if I replace the water pump?

    • @Cyrix2k
      @Cyrix2k  Před 9 lety

      DiazBrosTV In general, you can reuse the pulley. It's been awhile since I've done this and I believe some of the pulleys are plastic. In that case, be sure to check it for cracks. If it looks fine, go ahead and reuse it. If it's cracked or otherwise damaged, obviously replace it.

    • @Cyrix2k
      @Cyrix2k  Před 3 lety +1

      It's possible. Could also be a bad thermostat (sticking closed) or a blocked radiator. My first guess would be the thermostat and since that's cheap and easy to replace, I'd start there.

    It sounds like yours has a similar knocking sound to mine, how many miles does it have and is it still running?

    • @Cyrix2k
      @Cyrix2k  Před rokem

      This car was my friends back when I made this video and I wound up buying it about a year ago. It's coming up on 168k miles and you can see it on the Chesapeake Motorwerks channel. There are two things that might be knocking on this car. The first, depending on when this video was made, is that the car now has a single mass flywheel in it and that tends to be noisy. I don't recall if the clutch had been done yet when we did the water pump. The second is that it could be related to VANOS. I've had a few other observations with this car as well. Back when my friend owned it, the car had an unstable idle and sometimes the oil pressure light would flicker. I've since been tracking down issues and modifying the engine with an M50 intake swap & ICV delete. After resolving every vacuum leak I could find, the idle is MUCH better now and I haven't seen the oil light since. There are still some throttle response issues I'm tracking down and my next step is to rebuild the VANOS system (although the seller indicated he previously rebuilt it years ago). Maybe the knocking noise will go away after that. Anyway, it doesn't seem to be in the bottom end as it's still in one piece and runs strong. I'll be putting a turbo on it soon so if there are issues, I'll find them!

    #318 2003 Model 1. Each time I connect aircon, the engine stops working or it
    jerks or it doesn’t pump well . if I trun aircon off, the cars drievs well. What
    could be the problem?2. each time i start car, it starts at a high pitched noise, then after about 5 minutes it sounds normal, but temeprature gauge rises to normal after somtime. what could be the problem?

    • @Cyrix2k
      @Cyrix2k  Před 8 lety +1

      +Courage “Leen” Gwenikweni It sounds like maybe the belt tensioner on the A/C side may bad and failing to keep the belt tight. Unfortunately, it's hard to diagnose such a problem over the internet, but that's my best guess from your description.

      This water pump was replaced out of necessity so we only did the bare minimum to get the car running again. This particular vehicle actually had a recent cooling system overhaul so the thermostat was recent anyway.
