In a lifetime of attending and watching/listening to Figaros, this shoots to the top as one of the finest I have ever encountered. It is . . . perfect. Most of the ones I've enjoyed the past 20 or so years have been regie affairs both excellent and not so good, but this restores ones faith that sometimes going back to the original ideas from Mozart and Da Ponte can be just as modern and revelatory as shifting it to the 21st century. James Gray, in his very first opera, shows he has something a good half of the directors of opera don't: a complete understanding of the libretto and its ideas "come scritto" and with his creative team, and a stunning cast . . . well, I am over the moon with this Figaro and plan to revisit it many times! Thank you, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées for this beautiful gift!
Happy to see Larmore is still performing. For as long as her career has spanned, she sounds pretty good. The timbre of the voice is basically unchanged.

Das einzige was mich an dieser Produktion stört ist etwas, das vielleicht mit der Vision des Regisseurs zu tun hat. Dasdem Grafen jedes Fünckchen Menschlichkeit fehlt. Ich verstehe das er als Antagonist zu Figaro gesehen werden kann, aber ich denke nicht das er unbedingt böswillig ist.
The count realizes that he is losing his power socially, financially and sexually. Just look at the crumbling walls in his mansion. He tries to be powerful, but fails, which makes him a cruel person.
@@zsuzsannahallin8695 I don't think that he is cruel, he just can't exept loosing controll, and I also think that he is afraid of Figaros wit. He was once again outsmartet by his own personal servant. He doesn't love Rosina anymore and trys to find happyness with Susanna, but know he notices that his plan has failed. I think that he brings himself out of his misery by dreaming about his revenge over Figaro, hoping that this time Figaro won't show him that the count is in the controll of Figaro. I just don't like the idea of roles being only one way. Even very cruel people have a human side to them.

There you still find some humanity , which makes the performance much more believable. You can go for the extreme opposite, but I think that then you can't only be bad you must be terryfieng to be believable.

In particular, Da Ponte replaced Figaro's climactic speech against inherited nobility with an equally angry aria against unfaithful wives.The libretto was approved by the Austrian Emperor before any music was written by Mozart.
