This is an amazing take. Love the premise i was taken back by the show title. 😅
why didnt you re-cast ansel elgort
Can you release the background music used in this video? It is amazing.
I heard several years ago from a location scout in Tokyo that this was going to be a regular Hollywood film staring Daniel Radcliffe. Not that it matters much but I'm curious to know how this became an HBO property.
America makes films for Japan to kiss the Japanese on the heels, in the hope that American bases will remain in Japan and the Japanese will forget that the Americans dropped nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagosaki
The book this is based on is absolutely fascinating. If this series does it justice, this is going to be amazing to watch. Kudos to HBO Max for picking this book up, give your executive a raise, he/she have good taste. Plus, Ken Watanabe is a GOD, fantastic casting.
I got the audio book first and wanted to read the book afterwards. Can’t wait to see the series!
Alien Cop was a character that stuck with me for years after
Is the name also Tokyo Vice? The book I mean
@@ceced1417 oh wow. Same name? I'll get this right away
Knowing Hollywood probably not.
I'll watch anything with Ken Watanabe. The man is easily one of the best actors ever.
Yes! I'm excited 😊
Then why didn't he slap the s*** out of the director and tell him to cut this f****** miniseries down to four episodes
@nijuo joing get a life this series was good for the first couple of episodes then went straight to s***
He's so good at playing totured characters
his acting is great but the American actor is terrible

Ansel Elgort’s Japanese sounds quite impressive.
Yes, he obviously practiced a lot. From what we can hear in the trailer, his delivery is quite good!
Yeah it’s not hollywood nihongo 😂
I read he researched his role quite extensively taking Japanese classes & hanging out with some LA Times crime reporters. Can’t wait to see this for sure!
Yup quite impressed he got the tonation right
Made me thought that maybe he’s half Japanese or something hahaha
Probably my most anticipated new series of 2022, and the trailer definitely didnt disappoint!
I would say House of the dragon but then remember Game of thrones season 8 and always change my mind

The Vortex - Three Months to Go by Church Militant.
I mean idk about that, looks ok tho, I'll def watch.
Ansel Elgort is a good actor and his Japanese is actually pretty good. Obviously he does not sound like a native but I can tell he put effort into learning Japanese for this role. Looking forward to this series.
He shouldn’t sound like a native. Wouldn’t make sense since his character didn’t grow up in Japan. Him being fluent with an accent should be enough.
Learning the language and learning your lines are two different things
@@lycanthrophy616 there are japanese only panel interviews on CZcams of him listening and answering in japanese
I agree that his Japanese sounds very good. I’m quite impressed!
@@JoshityJosh well, sounds excellent for a gaijin....but not for a gaijin whose written japanese is good enough to write for a japanese newspaper. I would guess that gaijin would have nearly native level speaking ability.
1:17 This man made the show 10x more fun to watch. Highly underrated character of this show.

how is he underrated? he’s literally a main character lmao

Season 2 incoming! I was surprised BBC had picked up the rights to air the show in Britain (albeit belatedly on BBC and IPlayer so I was able to watch it and so glad I was, the show is great and I've never seen a film or T.V show about the Yakuza but I've only ever seen documentaries about them (Jake Adelstein was in a documentary called fall of the Yakuza on Vice on CZcams). Hopefully the BBC do the same for True Detective: Night Country, and if not at least please BBC pick up Tokyo Vice season 2!
@@stevemeters3090 have u finished it now?? what's your thought?
I need more seasons of this show! It's phenomenal! I can't believe we only get one more ep. Please HBO Max give us another season of this. I'm hooked
Yes season2 please come out
They're making it now I believe.
In Japan, no publisher would touch this book with a 40-foot pole. Nice to see it getting wide publicity with legit Japanese movie stars.
Why? Can you please explain?

Sad to see this show being underrated. I finished it in one day. People stop watching a show just because it starts slow. But I guess that's their loss.
This show was a breath of fresh air. The show has its dark moments but it also has good humor, good chemistry between characters, good acting. It will take you on an adventure and show you the side of Asia the western world doesn't necessarily want you to see. There were some really subtle acting moments on this show where characters do things that most viewers will miss but that's the beauty of it. It all feels so natural, you're led to feel as if you're a part of the story. 10/10 and 100% recommend you to watch.
the books better
What are you on about? This show is not underrated at all...
Can you please suggest where can I watch this
@@AR-ch5ek On HBO
The trailer makes it look boring
Ken Watanabe is simply iconic. I loved him in ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’.
Don't forget his other movies, Letters From Iwo Jima, The Last Samurai and Inception.
This cast and storyline with the backdrop of beautiful Tokyo is amazing. I can't wait to watch this.
Besides Ansel Elgort

@@daddy_doug Oh please allegations aside hes very wooden and has never gotten critical praise for his acting

I’ve been living in Japan for the past 6 years and I gotta say, Ansel’s Japanese is quite good! Very impressed.
Especially considering the guy didn't know a word of the language before they got started on this series. I did love that one scene in episode....I think 4 or 5?....where he pretended to be really bad at japanese with a very stilted "gaijin" accent, in order to cause someone to let their guard down.
The actor plays Sato really gave me chill. Looking forward to watch this series soon.
Yeah he was good....can't wait to see him.
He's really good in the show. I think this is the first big western project Sho Kasamatsu has been a part of, and he's been knocking it out of the park! Hopefully this is the big kick-off for an international career for him.
Just binged episodes 1 through 7 today. The best way I can put it for people on the fence about watching this show is it's basically Narcos if it was set in Japan. But instead of following a DEA agent you follow a crime reporter and its not drugs but bringing to light the activities of the yakuza. The soundtrack, the story, the atmosphere all amazing and captures the dark side of Tokyo/Kabukicho feeling. I highly recommend people watch this show.
It's so good.
Its so so good, just downloaded episode 8 can't wait
V.Accurate description
Thanks man
HBO don't leave us hanging. I became a Max subscriber for this show. Season 2 please... and thank you! And don't change the cast.
Well have I got some news for you.
Cannot believe its over now (as far as we know)
This show was crafted perfectly. Capturing the culture of old Tokyo and the Yakuza was well done. The characters and story were written so good and they felt real so it was easy to attatch to a lot of them.
However, the part that really should get praised highly is the cinematography, directing, editing, etc. EVERY scene always looked so good and it gave the show a unique look and tone to it.
The show ending where it ended is perfect, but if there ever was a season 3 then id be happy but i would HOPE it only gets made if there is a story. (no punchline intended)
Been waiting for the series for what seems like 5 years now. Happy it's finally coming out!
HBO Max: Let's make a series based on a true story in one of the most popular countries in Asia and have arguably the biggest Japanese actor to star in it.

Ever heard of torrent bro?
It's a TV series
They had me in with Ken Watanabe and Rinko Kikuchi, but if they had cast Takeshi Kitano, I would have already said this would be a classic.
The first three episodes are amazing.
half way through episode 2 and im really enjoying it. The vibe, the city.
Yes but where is Kiryu and Majima?
I was promised them fighting in the streets.
I'm not allowed to stand up for myself!? I thought this was Japan? Huh, isn't this Japan? I'm sorry, I thought this was Japan!
Ansel's Japanese is amazing! To me, it sounds like the Japanese of someone who has lived there for a long time.
Beautiful on its own✨
This is a year of Michael Mann: Heat 2 novel, Tokyo Vice, Enzo Ferrari biopic
My only gripe with Ferrari is Driver replacing Jackman. But this is such a fabulous year Mann-wise 🔥🔥🔥 My favorite filmmaker 💙
This is one of the best trailers i have ever seen. Truly great editing, sound, music. Bravo!
It is one of the best trailers for TV. I can't stop watching it.....haha!
What a great show. A fresh story line, good acting all around, giving you the feeling your actually witnessing everything for real. The show needs to be good if you need to read half the show with captions. It's worth the read. We're waiting for season three with excitement and interest.
Simply amazing, i trusted these positive comments here and watched the show and i was not dissapointed, i was left speechless at the end because i just wanted more ! Gladly there will be season 2. Ansel is so damn great and the rest of the cast too, must watch, this is a masterpiece.

Then singing back street boys is priceless lol 😂
I could write sonnets about how amazing this show is. Michael Mann directing. The original author of the book as an executive producer. Ken Watanabe being Ken Watanabe (always awesome). Tons of outstanding scenes and sets in Tokyo. 🤤 🇯🇵
Thank you, HBO - for green lighting this show! ❤️ 👍
I just finished the first two seasons and I was hooked, this was well shot, and well acted (considering this is the first time for me seeing any of these actors and actresses) they were phenomenal. They're portrayals were visceral and the relationships between the characters was palpable. Great job showing the inner workings of the Yakuza and the infiltration, how Jake worked his sources and used his own instincts, quick-thinking, and resources to work his was in and up. Great cinematography, showing all the areas of Tokyo and general culture of Japan.
The statement that really captured the atmosphere for me was when Hiroto said to Jake "The right choice isn't always the moral one/I didn't want to dirty your hands"
I love the way Tozawa was brought down, and how his wife pulled the strings, but I felt bad for Jake when she chastised him about the tape when neither of them knew his boss destroyed it to keep uncomfortable questions buried.
Man the quality HBO and WB produce is just amazing. This is why I canceled all my streaming apps for HBO Max.
A small price for Salvation
I just have everything and share it with friends

2020s Tokyo Vice from Mann too

Fully on board. This is the type of content HboMax needs. Keep'em coming.
I suggest you take a moment to watch the intro of this show. It's not boring I guarantee you that. I always skip intros but on episode 2 after skipping the intro, something caught my attention and I realized how beautifully animated it was. I had to rewind and replay the intro twice cuz it's so well done. Do watch it at least once to appreciate the hard work of the person that made the intro. 😍🔥
I always watch the entirety of the intro on every episode for shows I'm invested in.
It helps to savor it before it's gone
I think it’s wild how much older Rinko Kikuchi looks in this compared to 10 years ago in Pacific Rim. I know a decade is a long time but man.
As a Japanese citizen who has seen countless of dumb, nonsensical Western adaptations and portraits of Japanese culture through films and TV series, this might be the first time I didn't say "Yea, right...lol" while watching the trailer 👍🏼 Looking forward to seeing Hideaki Ito and Tomohisa Yamashita's in this
you are a white person pretending to be japanese
Yea, right...lol>>>Same reaction from a Japanese lady but I am a bit tired of this typical combination, Tokyo+yakuza+Watanabe Ken+ Kikuchi Rinko (Nothing against both actors, tho).
I demand a season 2!
About time Rinko Kikuchi gets more roles that exposes her talents to the masses 🔥
This series is a masterpiece enough said !
Just saw the pilot ... totally lives up to the hype
Hope they get another season! Just finished season 2 and was a beautiful ending!
Jake Adelstein himself recently confirmed on Twitter/X that season two is the last season, which I'm fine with as the second season finale was the perfect series conclusion and a third season isn't necessary and would probably only serve to undermine its own legacy-HBO/Max needs to develop an Ishida prequel series chronicling his rise to power within the Chihara Kai in the style of The Godfather Part II, that would be epic!
Just finished season 1 and I'm very impressed! Solid show and I hope for more seasons!

Have seen 4 episodes yet and absolutely love it. Got a nice storyline, interesting characters and anything can happen vibe.
This original mini-series elevates MAX in a big way! I am so grateful to all the producers and directors for bringing it to us! If you're just considering watching, I encourage you to listen twice to this introductory video before watching the show, and then google "cast of Tokyo Vice" to help you keep up. I watched Season 1 without closed captioning and was able to capture enough to understand; not true of S2. While initially the Japanese people all seem alike because you are taking in so much and so quickly that is foreign (sounds, connecting the facial expressions to those sounds, behaviors, etc.), pretty quickly you begin to see the individual characters, whatever part they are playing, in all their complexity and beauty. I was captivated by the sounds of the Japanese language, and sensed quickly that our languages shape us in profound ways -- this you see when star Ansel Elgort returns briefly in the show to the Midwest U.S. to visit his parents and sister. Brilliant acting by all, you will appreciate that of the main characters soon enough, but listen for the inimitable sound of total control in the softly raspy yet gruff voice of Japanese actor Shun Sugata, who plays the head of one of the two main organized crime families! Happy viewing!
Been waiting for this one for a while! Excited it’s finally here.
The books fantastic! If the series stays true to what’s in the book, we are in for a wild ride!
Ken Watanabe should have received an Oscar for his role as Katsumoto. If only they had made a franchise of his character, a 20 year war over the course of 6 movies. I would like to see him play a samurai again, he is perfect as one.
Just watched it in one sitting,AMAZING!!!!!!
The beginning was a bit slow but i knew it was going to be one of those series that grow on you,by episode 2 i was hooked!
This is such a mature breath of fresh air when it comes to HBO series, tired of the sci-fi and crime detective series, this is so intricate, engaging and mature.
I LOVE IT
Right? I can watch it all over again! Luved it!
Whomsoever is the creator of the background score, he needs an applaud. The elevation in the score that happens at 1:45 and the beats at the end (2:21) just enhances the trailer.
Ngl man, this is one of the most interesting shows I’ve ever watched.. I love the storyline of Jake Adelstein as a crime reporter and how he continues to find himself in between conflict with the Tokyo mob.. I like the lead detective he works with as well.. Obviously, it’s based off a true story, so I assume Hiroto served as sort of a father figure to him in real life. That’s a nice touch. The casting is great too. Personally, I think Ansel Elgort is a very under-appreciated actor. He was phenomenal in The fault In Our Stars.
Omg flipping goodness!!! I can't get enough of this show. Now it's finale... 🤯. Addictive as heck. Superb acting.
