Because it's based on the book doesn't mean they did a faithful adaptation. If you've read the book, you know that this version of Miranda is entirely different. She's not British, for instance. Meryl chose to have white hair and also chose all of those outfits among a selection that was made for her. The Hermès scarves are mentioned, but in the film, her signature, her statement is actually her hair.
Streep's own style is so laid back, yet her acting would have you believe she lives and breathes this glamour.
