  • They are capable of flying at amazing speeds, with one mission in mind - to counter any hostile air targets within a range of 40 kilometres around Singapore. They are the I-Hawk missiles, part of the Republic of Singapore Air Force's defence umbrella. Khai Yan follows an I-Hawk firing unit on one of their deployment exercises to find out how these missiles are deployed when Singapore's air space is threatened.

    I was a HAWK mechanic in the Netherlands in the late 90’s early 00’s. Went for training to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville AL, had a great time there with the US army. We had the Triad construction, 2 HAWK FP’s combined with a Patriot FP (and stinger teams). The Netherlands sold the HAWK to Romania in 2003.

    I was a HAWKer 16E for 4 years of my Army service. A-1/65th 11th BDE 80-84' "If it flies, it dies!" I participated in the RAM/TAS rollout as well as Patriot-Foe integration testing with Raytheon's new (at the time) Patriot system and IHAWK on White Sands missile range.

      Do you have to manually point to missiles in the right direction or is it auto?

    • @TexasVeteranPatriot
      @TexasVeteranPatriot Před rokem +1

      @@Neilukuk The tracking radar "illuminates" the target to the missile and it "rides the beam" to the target. Acquisition is performed visually at the TCC console radar screen (IPAR) by the TCO (officer) and TCA (NCO) and are verified FOE via IFF system and assigned to a firing console. The console operator manually slews the tracking radar (IHIPIR) and initiates a sweep scan at the appropriate azimuth. At radar lock, the operator reports to the TCO/TCA. Fire command is given by the TCO at "target-in-range" (40km) and operator fires the missile. Hope that helps!

    • @Neilukuk
      @Neilukuk Před rokem +1

      @@TexasVeteranPatriot Yes it does thanks. Do you think this will be helpful in Ukraine? I guess anything helps but unsure how much of a difference this will make. I appreciate the info you provided.

    • @TexasVeteranPatriot
      @TexasVeteranPatriot Před rokem

      @@Neilukuk Against aircraft, yes. Against missiles, only the slowest and largest; i.e Iskander..etc. HAWK always seemed to have issues with anything smaller. In the ME, it couldn't handle SCUDs at all. If the missile is fired from "stand off" range, then you have a chance at a hit. A small one. I have hit air-surface missiles in simulator but have missed WAY more than hit. Like 15:1 ratio miss vs hit. Problem is timely detection and the radar refresh rate is slower than newer digital systems. I expect the Russkis to target them fairly easily cuz it's a large cumbersome system with many large components, not easily moved. It's life will depend on the accuracy and effectiveness of the crew. In other words, miss one incoming...you're dead. Hopefully, Raytheon improved the missile like they did for Patriot to increase effectiveness against missiles.

    • @Neilukuk
      @Neilukuk Před rokem +1

      @@TexasVeteranPatriot Hopefully Ukraine keeps them moving so it's not as easy for them to target. These should be ok for Kalibr missile right? That's what Russia is using mostly along with S-300 missiles I think. I'm unsure how much training Ukraine has received and that sounds like it will be a problem :( You should volunteer lol jk. Thanks again for providing the info.

    HAWK is still out there and working. Although it can operate in various modes and anti-missile, it is best in low level tactical defense. Quite the system, a maintenance nightmare though as technicians became scarce in the 70's and later. US strategy had that ADA was layered. Up close to the lines were Redeye/Stinger, Chaparral, and Vulcan. Next was IHAWK (40 klicks range and 7-10 klicks deployed sites), then Nike-Hercules. Patriot replaced both HAWK and Nike-Herc. With overlapping layers and capabilities, there was no such thing as "not enough", your life depended on being "enough".
