Napoleon sold this big chunk of land because he had lost his richest colony, haiti, to the slave revolution. You could say he was broke and had lost some of his best troops during the war down in haiti. The haitians went on to support the new nations of latin america that were fighting for indepence from the others colonial powers, mainly spain. So this little nation of xlaves caused some of the greatest changes inhuman history, and lets not forget that the industrial revolution that followed these events, was financed by the wealth created by the slaves in the old colonies. At the least we should teach the whole story of the "purchase" rather than "look at this as a great fire sale we took advantage of". We should be able to look back on our founding fathers with more than the great deals they got.
