Some don't realize that he had over 800 goals and 350 assists before he joined the MLS. Less than 1 year ago he won the World Cup, World Cup MVP and 2nd place in total goals (1 less than Mbappe). Ligue 1 2022-2023 had 16 goals and 16 assists (#10 in goals and #1 in assists) with PSG in 15 matches. Also tied with Kevin De Bruyne and Antoine Griezmann in the top 5 leagues for 1st place in assists. #6 in Europe for Goal contribution (40) in 2022/23, just behind Erling Haaland (61), Kylian Mbappe (49), Kylian Mbappe (49), Vinicius Jr. (44) and Marcus Rashford (41). He hated playing for PSG. 1 of 2 top candidates to win the next Ballon D'or. Nominated for UEFA Player of the year 2022/23. 2022 IFFHS Men's World Best Playmaker. So the MLS didn't get a washed-up player, they got 1 of the best players in the world today. So, it is a lie that he cannot do this in Europe anymore.

He was doing it in Europe only a matter of weeks ago, what are people thinking, I would have loved to have seen him in England and he may well have earnt more money but he clearly isn't there for the money or else he would have took the $500 M a year deal in Saudi.
I actually think he is there because he knows he can make a difference, in 10/15 years from now USA could well be in the top 5 international teams in the world competing for titles and everyone of the players in that future team will have drawn inspiration from Messi, he is putting something back into football and still playing competitive football, MLS style of running off the ball and reading passes will improve in the near future as will the creative passes . There is a lesson to be learnt from all of the greatest players in the world no matter where you play.

Indeed, Messi could join Barca or any top ranked team now with 36 and Im 100% sure he would still be absolutely outstanding and making the team better. Not long ago in 2019 he literally carried a dead Barca to the UCL semis. Messi isnt consider the arguably best goalscorer, dribbler, passer, playmaker of all time for nothing. He also became a great leader and has almost superhuman vision. Messi is the whole package. Give him the captain armband and he gives you the trophy :)

One chanel I recently discoverd explained it simpel and beautifull.
Among the young talents in the US that only a few make it to the pro accedemys and from there only about 2% make it eventualy to the MLS.
From these average MLS players a few realy stand out.
Some of them stand out more than others, just like Messi's new team mate Martinez, who got the MVP award for netting +30 in the leauge.
Martinez struggled in the Serie A tho, what puts europes average players at a completly new level.
Yet we are still not at the level of players like Sergio Aguero, who is widely recognized as one of the finest strikers of the Premier League era, who deffinetly was one of the best Prem forwards.
If we than take a look at Argueros national team at the time he was active, we see that he was bechned.
Bechned for a player who is important for the team to win at any day he is fit, the one you would never bench.
      That is Messi.

@@user-ir8er1bh4q What you have to remember is that football is a way of life in south America and is the go to sport across the rest of the world other than the States, everywhere you go there are kids playing it, in the streets, on the park even on tennis courts.
In England alone ( not the UK ) there are around 40,000 teams that play on a Saturday and Sunday plus school and academy teams, at least 60% of boys play at some level as kids, we have over 27,000 FA qualified referees and over 30,000 FA qualified coaches and 10s of thousands that are not qualified, in a way half of the fathers in England are like non qualified coaches, so I can only guess what it is like in Brazil and Argentina, it must be mad.
We don't start playing thinking it is going to lead to wealth we play because we love it.
Football IS the greatest game in the world there is no argument about that otherwise it would not be the most played and watched game in the word.
North America hasn't got what most of the world has got because they have their own sports that pretty much only North Americans play in, not totally but pretty much.
What America in particular has got is great athletes, winning mentality, great facilities and no shortage of people willing to invest if they can see a profit margin. Because of this it may well be possible that football ( soccer ) could become the go to sport in the future if handled well and if that happens I could see a MLS 1 , MLS 2 , MLS 3, and a MLS 4 with7 or 8 tiers under them with thousands of teams.
Simply put it it is possible for it to become the biggest and best league in the world where all the best players would want to play and if that happens then no doubt the USA men's national side would probably dominate the world. They have the infrastructure the money and the available 1st class athletes to do so but this is the second or even third part of the beginning and it would take time.

      Marshall, I think you have a good point… 🤔🤔🤔
MLS has a good level of athleticism: what average players league lack in technique they have in “stamina”. So for an “old” player (> 35 years) it could be difficult to deal with younger ballers.
Moreover: football is a team sport, so no matter how good you are as a singular player, if you also score a brace, but your team concedes 3 goals, you lose! And maybe you are even exhausted after running 90 minutes to help out the defense.
(Think about Ibrahimovic at Galaxy. He was the best player in the league ([“by far”, Zlatan said] but his teammates were awful - expecially in defense! 😱🙈🙀!!!)
Messi is not alone in Miami (Busquets & Alba and Callender [!] help him), instead Insigne in Toronto is quite “alone”. Bernardeschi is more a competitor to him than a help.

Messi never changed in fact some of his moves go back to when he was a child and the only thing that's changed is his speed. He can't run as long and as fast as he used to but other than that MLS got the real Mccoy. His vision and reading of the game got even better by the way which is insane because he was already good.

Messi is a unicorn among stallions, here and in Europe for last 20 yrs. One very overlooked Messi trait is he doesn't panic under pressure, which on-fire Taylor, Cremaschi are beginning to learn (but NOT Gomez, OMG!!). With Messi's presence, MLS players/youth will learn, be inspired. Next 3-5 years will see jump in US talent. Also Inter is doing well bc Busquets, Alba are shoring up sloppy D. Without them, IM would look like a VERY bad version of Argentina's one-man-team of 2014.

The thing is here that he could have gone back to Barcelona and there was another offer from an English team. So two first tier teams in football wanted him because he's not declining in skills and he's more experience now as a playmaker. He has done things like that for 20 years to the best defensive teams in the planet. MLS is not a bad league, he's just too good for any league.

Facing Mourinho’s Real Madrid, Klopp’s Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Juventus… is not like playing against Cincinnati. Comparing what Messi did in Europe (Liga/Champions’ League), in his prime, to what is doing now in MLS, at 36, is simply nonsense.
Of course Lio can still give moments of pure art on the pitch (Cruz Azul, Dallas, Nashville), but the difficulty level of the opponents is too low to be compared.

Mi amigo, don’t get me wrong: Messi’s game is (still) a joy for the eyes but nobody beats time - unfortunately.
And to be honest, Lio was the best player in the last world cup, but he wasn’t alone - “Scaloneta” had great players.
Riquelme (wonderful N.10, by the way) already knows that modern football is played with more and more speed - exactly what Messi did for 20 years.
I remember when Juan Roman got benched after the first half in 2006 world cup quarter finals (🙄?) against Germany. Peckerman made that mistake because He considered Riqielme too slow. A stunning Argentine was eliminated at penalties by an inferior Germany…

Who’s crying? And cry about what: the clownesque defending in MLS teams?
Dude, if you say that scoring against Buffon/Casillas/Neuer/Alisson/Nesta/Sergio Ramos/Cannavaro/Van Dijk/Boateng is just as difficult as scoring against goalie/defenders of Nashville/Atlanta/Orlando/Charlotte/Cincinnati… you simply don’t know the game, sorry. 🤷🏻‍♂️
To say that MLS is (now) inferior than South America or European football isn’t disrespectful: it’s a fact.
And in saying this fact, I’m not disrespecting Messi - nobody who loves football could ever think to disrespect one of the demigod of the beautiful game.
