The firing squad was instructed to shoot at his torso, but one of the soldiers shot at his head causing a 4 to 5 inch piece of his skull to explode in mid air. Now for the inaccuracies. The execution of 333 originally, now 335 communist partisans and political sympathizers is true, but ask yourselves WHY? Well, what spurred the Chief of Police to seek retribution was the death of 40 fascist soldiers, some Italian and most Germans. The Italian and German soldiers were ambushed at night and many were shot in the back execution style. He who wins the war writes the history, sometimes accurately and sometimes not so accurately.
The 335 people executed were not all communist sympathizers: there were partisans, sure, but not only communists. The most illustrious victim was Colonel Montezemolo, who fought nazis and fascists as a loyal monarchist. There were many Jewish, caught by the nazis solely because of their religion. There were ordinary people too, like a colleague's of mine Grandpa who chose the wrong day to go to the barber and was caught too. It all happened because a partisans' bomb killed 33 soldiers who were all nazis, there were no fascists at all. Those soldiers belonged to the Tyrolean community of Alto Adige, a region inside the Italian borders before the WW2, then illegally attached to the 3d Reich in 1943.
