Sonic Forces - Episode Shadow Null Space - Final(?) Terrain Previews

  • Think I've finalised what pieces of terrain I want to use for Null Space ??? or whatever the hell I decide to call it. Next step, make it beatable without the Free Cam & fix up the many camera issues, then work on making it a good stage.

    The stages I'm using are:
    Prison Island
    Dusty Desert
    Space Gadget
    Radical Highway
    The Last Way
    Kingdom Valley
    Westopolis
    Seven segments representing three games, I would have liked to put a Heroes stage in, but I didn't have any good thoughts for which, so I decided to not include it.

    Yes I did run through Westopolis backwards, I intend to make it be backwards for variety.

      I understand your loss of inspiration, especially on a game like forces. But let me just say, you have made some of the best modded maps I have seen in forces. I admire people like you who go above and beyond to create content like this, and ask nothing (or almost nothing) in return. Keep on modding to your hearts content.

    As i have mentioned previously, i love the idea and concept of this. Already better than Sonic Team’s idea of going ‘Green Hill with Cubes’. It’s awesome to see many different sections of different stages to represent Shadow’s past. Seeing Kingdom Valley in Null Space reminds me a lot of End of the World, where Shadow goes thru Kingdom Valley to collect the Chaos Emerald, which i’m sure why you choose it for that special reason. Would be really cool if you add End of the World for Kingdom Valley, just to nail it on the head 😄 Keep up the great work and looking forward to the final release 😁

    Ok, this... this should’ve been a level that we wanted than the virtual reality green hill in Episode Shadow.
    Man, if Sonic Team should have spend 2 or 3 years than 1 year of making actual levels of the game. It would have made Forces interesting. Better backstory, nostalgia levels, and characters development for the characters.

      Yeah, literally using SEGA/Sonic Team's own assets/stages that they created and using a filter suddenly equals "omg better than dlc!"       What ticks me off the most is there are certain parts of levels where the drift is completely automated. Not to mention the removal of the drift mechanic made the boost gameplay extremely stale...

    Imagine if the Null Space level had randomised sequences, say for example in one playthrough Infinite teleports you to the OG White Jungle, Radical Highway, and Metropolis, maybe in each playthrough it would send you to a randomised level each varying in order and what section of the level you spawn in.

      You're forgetting the fact that those games weren't as.... Gimmicky and actually allowed you to play through the levels normally. Sonic and other characters had more freedom of movement in older games than in most recent games.

    A very neat concept! I said it before and I'll say it again: Brandon Jones, Infinite Force, and KnuxFan24 should've been Sonic Team's 3 level designers (Hell even Level conceptualizers (I don't care if that's not a word I can't think of any other word to use) considering some of the cool ideas I've seen them pull of.), they know how to make something pretty creative with gameplay that's pretty limited.

    This is actually really cool. Trapped in a maze of memories with no obvious way out, with no choice but to push forward. Honestly, this level could serve as an explanation as to where the hell Shadow was up until his appearance in Forces. It'd also explain how he knows how Infinite works, having truly experienced it first hand, not that fake Green Hill stupidity. I really liked the way you used assets from previous games to make the stage. It just shows old doesn't nean bad.

    I love the idea and concept of this. The dialogue fits so well and it all feels like a proper story is being told throughout the level, which makes a nice change from mindlessly boosting through various iterations of Green Hill.

    I have an idea, what if this stage start with the real Null Space that Sonic and the Avatar found themselves in and the same things happen but instead of getting out of it like Sonic and the Avatar did, Shadow is teleported to Prison Island and the other stage. That way using the Null Space music would fit and it would contrast with Sonic's and the Avatar's Null Space level.
    To add some suggestions hope you make this stage with the vanilla physics in mind because the platforming in Dusty Desert seems complicated and I don't personally don't like that physics mod and I kinda wish you don't rely on sections that you need the boost to reach it.

      what physics mod? also i think the music switches to virtual reality (supporting me) after the first section. its just when he reset the level, it reverted back to the first theme and he didnt use any transitions to reset it after. though starting from null space is an interesting idea.

    It would be crazy if you put Lost Impact and Maria speaks. That would be a heartbreaker, especially if it is a final stage you warp to.

    I honestly love this, although it feels like there are a bit too many different stages represented that just adds to Shadow's confusion which would be Infinite's intention. I really like this concept.

    I think during some particular platforming parts, there should be some of those red energy cubes from Virtual Reality (if they can be added in 3D that is). Also the platforming in Dusty Desert feels a little shallow, there’s only one path to take and most of it just platforming on flat squares over a bottomless pit, which doesn’t really fit well in a Sonic game. Maybe you could add more paths or moving platforms, or maybe make the cube platforms giant pillars by extending them down into the abyss. These are just some suggestions to make the level design a little more organic.

    Hmm, I mean it’s looking pretty good, but I think some of the stages that have been recently added don’t really feel appropriate. If this sequence is supposed to be Infinite tormenting Shadow, showing him past events in his life that were important, then I think stages like Kingdom Valley and Westopolis don’t really need to be here. Most of the other stages do hold relevance in Shadow’s history (Iron Jungle - Facility he was kept in for 50 years, Dusty Desert - Place where he defeated Mephilis and accepted his future, Space Gadget - Aboard the A.R.K the place he was created, Radical Highway - Where he met Sonic and The Last Way - Where he defeated Black Doom and learnt the answers of his past), levels like Kingdom Valley and Westopolis don’t really seem like levels that hold any relevance in Shadow’s history, in fact one stage I think you could add that does hold relevance to Shadow’s history is Final Fortress where they discovered all of the Shadow androids.

      If we're saying that characters remember 06 in some capacity, then Kingdom Valley does have a bit of significance. It was where he obtained one of the Chaos Emeralds that saved Sonic's life in End of the World.
      As for Westopolis, it's where the whole Black Arms invasion started, so it seemed fitting to have it.

      @@Knuxfan24 I think nobody remembers 06, except for Blaze. I think Dusty Desert and Kingdom Valley feel the most out of place. Yeah, they're memorable for Shadow, especially for Dusty Desert, but hadn't those events been erased, it would've been fine.

    You missed White Jungle, its always my favorite stage from Shadow playthrought in SA2 XDD but this ammount of stages all stacked together to form a mega stage? i think its enough XDD
    Its a very good idea making shadow go from illusion to illusion from parts of his past, and its more fitting because he barely remembers any of them so it only make sense for shadow to "follow the lead" since this could uncover more secrets from his past, also Infinite appearing at the end of each section changing the illusion to confuse you even more its quite the nice touch.
    But the detail i loved the most was that Jason Griffith bit there in that SA2 section and how confused Shadow was to hear that, like deep down he knew that part of his past really well and caught him off guard, that right there is real attention to detail, and i love those bits of details because it makes more believable the characters in the long run, something that Forces should had instead of focusing on being "too edgy" for its own good.
    A thing you could do is making Infinite fly by on each part of the stage and each time you see him flying by he summons enemies on the area, dunno if that's possible at the moment but it could be a neat thing to see, if not he just flying by like messing with shadow could be cool like the avatar Metropolitan Highway stage where he appears now and then chasing the avatar and looking it from a distance, that could add a more gloom and eerie vibe to the whole thing.

    That reminds me of the Kingdom of the Wind The Castle Valley from Sonic 06. I watched it when I once teleported to the past. By the way, keep in mind that in Null Space there is nothing but only my energy cubes. Still, I like what I see now. Not Bad.

    What really makes me impressed is Sonic's custom dialogue tree. This "Twisted Memory" level really seems like a hell for Shadow, Infinite trying to ruin his character ark by reminding him of all the games in it.

    If I was part of the design crew, I’d have Shadow start in Radical Highway (Rouge contacts Shadow), then transition to Final Chase (when Shadow believes it’s all an illusion), then maybe Rail Canyon/Bullet Station (when Shadow asks what happened to Omega), Westopolis (when Shadow questions if he’s really speaking to Rouge), and finally back to the city when Omega was last heard (“I am not weak. I AM NOT WEAK. I AM NOT WEAK.”)

    This is incredible. It still needs the proper section transitions and modes of travel implemented of course, but you know... there's just something downright HAUNTING and unsettling about roaming through these places without any enemies, and only having to deal with stage hazards. It's so unsettling.
    Perhaps there also really outta be a Heroes stage and/or something from the Space Colony ARK in here somewhere...!

    If you ever get back on this project again, I recommend just having a short hallway of Shadow Android's within Final Fortress as a recommendation as to what to include for Heroes. Not really a stage, but more of a transition.

    I like the additional dialogue. I also love the use of the other terrains here soo cool it gives us a longer better stage and more reason for shadow to have been out of comission so long despite realizing he was in illusions if sonic and avatar character get out of null space so fast

      Forces was a big fat disappointment
      The music was almost out of place (Almost, even then i won't lie that most of it sounds pretty awesome)
      Story throws everything we knew about sonic out the fucking window, also assumes that the avatar is a timid coward
      Classic sonic was entirely uncalled for
      And i could go on and on and on!
      But i hope you got the idea of why i don't enjoy it as much

      Since when the hell was Tails afraid to fight Chaos?
      And since when did torture = pillow fight?
      And in the face of all this even excluding the torture part, sonic would atleast take eggman seriously
      Also
      Phantom ruby makes no fucking sense and doesn't care about logic
      Even just the way the characters talk about it makes no sense
      Is it virtual reality or real!?
      If it's virtual then it can't really hurt you
      And hell you probably shouldn't even be able to see the things it conjures up
      Then there's a giant fucking sun, if that was real it'd scorch the whole planet apart
      There's plenty of simulations of the sun right in front of the earth, and none of them are pretty
      And i could spend a whole week typing about how Sonic Forces failed
      But this'll be all i say for now

      The Phantom ruby is real to the person being affected.
      Seeing all the things hitting you send stressed to the brain. Stress can cause heart attack. Heart attack can cause death.

      the torturepart is actually localisation only. (that is why sonic is so sure that the shuttle is still there,it probably was just being stuck in the cell for a few days and nothing else in the original). however,the story really is not really good. the plot might as well not exist.

    Once I get good at Unreal, can I remake this concept?
    For example, here is the sequence: Mystic Jungle. Where it all began.
    Dusty Desert: His final fight with Mephiles.
    Last Way: Black Doom
    The Eggman base he was taken to.
    The area in the ARK where he and Sonic.
    White Jungle
    The place he was held at for 50 years.
    And finally, the moment Maria died, only this time, Infinite does the killing.
