Cost: $300
Skill Level: Beginner
Tools List:
Paint brushes in a variety of sizes [amzn.to/32XWhIl]
Paint roller [amzn.to/32WEscB]
Putty knife [amzn.to/2OkBzhN]
Caulking gun [amzn.to/2LDVVRm]
Utility knife [amzn.to/2QlHGF0]
Shopping List:
Paint [amzn.to/2O9YXhJ]
Drop cloths [amzn.to/2LGsEpb]
Painter’s tape [amzn.to/2ObiY7K]
Microfiber roll for paint roller [amzn.to/2ObRa2S]
Liquid mask [amzn.to/30aQy4P]
Paint additive [amzn.to/31z1JB7]
Paintable caulking [amzn.to/30uikVo]
Steps:
1. Before starting work, remove or protect any furniture in the room with drop cloths. Protect where the floor meets the wall with painter’s tape.
2. When painting, always start at the top of the room and work your way down. Always pour paint into a separate container.
3. Paint the ceiling with a matte paint and the roller.
4. Paint the trim, including window trim, chair rails, and door casings with a semi-gloss paint and a 1 _” synthetic paint brush. Start from the top and work down.
5. For painting around windows, apply a liquid mask to the glass with a paint brush instead of using painter’s tape. The liquid acts like a spot primer if it gets on the sash, and it will protect the glass while painting.
6. Once the mask turns clear, add a second coat and wait for that to turn clear as well.
7. Paint the window frame, starting from the inside closest to the glass, and work your way out. To keep paint from getting into the cracks between the window and the jamb, slide a putty knife in the crack and drag it down as you paint. Add a paint additive if necessary to thin out the paint being applied around the windows.
8. Once the window frame is painted, paint the casing, then the window sill. For the side of the casing, keep the brush parallel to the wall and drag the brush all the way down the side of the casing.
9. Apply a second coat to the window trim, chair rails, and door casings.
10. Paint the walls using eggshell paint in most rooms. Low traffic rooms, like a bedroom, can use a matte finish.
11. Cut the edges around the walls with a 2 _” synthetic brush. Carefully drag the brush in a motion away from the ceiling and trim to prevent it from spilling over.
12. Paint the rest of the walls with a microfiber roller.
13. Before applying the final coat, using paintable caulking to fill in any gaps between trim, baseboards, etc.
14. Apply a second coat to the walls.
15. Clean up the drop cloths and painter’s tape. To remove the liquid mask, cut around the glass with a utility knife and peel it back slowly.

He did a couple of things which I really like. Firstly he did the trims, it's easier to cut the trims into the wall, then cut the walls into the trim, and he advised to start the window joinery from the inside and work outwards. Not everybody does this. This guy really knows his stuff.
Mike Bell that comment was 1 year ago 😂
Mike Bell smd😭
If you paint enough, you'd come to do this anyway. It's called experience.
Finally Mauro got a segment on TOH, guy is a pure artist if you havent seen his older works
Ankit Choubey Almost as good as Bob Ross
He's also the worlds smartest painter. Only a true master gets paid to instruct the client to do his work. 😜🤪😂👍👍👍
"It's shinier than I thought, wanted more of a eggshell or matte."
"No."
He does the same thing in this one.

"We want to keep the original finish underneath"
Removes anyways.
I love him lol
@@kipbush5887 that's because it's impossible to keep the original finish underneath.
@G H, Impossible to clean.
If Consuela from Family Guy was a man.
A lot said this and that. Little did you know that this guy won Best Of Boston Painter for over decades. Just FYI. I have coordinate work with him doing floors and have seen NOTHING but spectacular work more than 17 years.
Beeps Creeps lier
So the secret to professional results is to be a professional. Gotcha.
Brett von Henneberg-Römhild it’s a how-to video lol he’s a great teacher.
It’s just painting. Not surgery
Regardless of your statement, “ best of. Best “ is a vote nothing more usually on a small scale . I saw rolling and brushwork that are very low to mid level at. best . No worries... I’d like to see a German apprentice blow him away in minutes
Love how Mauro showed the difference in the various kinds of paints that are available on the market, and what specific job they are typical used for. Lots of great tips and info!
Love Mauro! I'm so glad he's remained part of the TOH family! He's good in his work, and he's excellent in this video!
As a "teacher" Mauro's consistency produced a good result for Becka. What a good job!
Mauro is great, really knows his stuff. Hope to see more of him on the show
Liquid masking works on carpet too. Applying with a foam brush is key. Pulls right up when done, just make sure it's completely dry before removing so it comes up easier
Amazing video! I live in Florida, and have been researching DIY painting, and this is the most helpful video I found. Very clear, and straightforward. I have already finished one bedroom, and it came out great. Thanks!!
Wow cool trick with the spackling knife and that clear window stuff. Great advice!!
In the process of closing on a home that needs some serious love in the paint department lol. Glad I saw this video!!!!!
Liguid Mask! That is awesome! I so will be using this the next time I paint. Thank you!
I love all the learning that happens from this show!
Never have heard about this masking paint. What an easy way to clean up! Will use this on my next project!
Ive also used this window film for big jobs can also be sprayed from airless sprayers i love it way faster than masking
Quick note do not use on textured glass
Wow! Super impressed with the liquid mask, a great tip!
Nice to see that others are showcased beyond the typical gang. Sharing the knowledge and the spotlight is always good all around. Go Mauro
Let us see more of his work and help please!
how to paint like a pro: have the customer do it for you
I might implement this really affordable method as well, get the customer do it so I can go to work elsewhere until they finishing the job. Then I rock up to collect the money.
OVERLXRD that’s funny
That is funny. However she gained a lot of knowledge doing the work under his guidance. That is the goal of the show.
OVERLXRD 🤣
Awesome video and that liquid mask is the stuff future legends lol. Wished this stuff was around when i was a teenager . Painting with my grandfather was my first paid job I ever worked. I learned alot but as time went by its easy to see that i still have much to relearn.
This guy needs his own CZcams channel. Great educational teacher for DIY
Thank you so much for these vids! I’ve learned so much! 💕👏🏽
The liquid mask alone gets this video a 👍! That is an incredible product; first time seeing it. Don't ask me where I've been--obviously not painting, lol.
"Liquid mask." This is a new product to me. I had no idea it existed. And it does a fantastic job. Thanks
House Painting techniques are so important, amazing, love what your doing. Important to know when maintaining your home.
She is a good painter. Precise and careful. Steady hand.
The tony Montana of painting "you got some paint for me", good job brother 👏 good customer service and product showcase for the client, there's more than just painting, there's color coordinating for cliental as well.
Helpful information, thank you for sharing !!
This man knows what he's talking about. I've never heard of the liquid masker but I will most definitely be looking into it!
It's been around for years.
Haha I love his commentary too, “NIIIICE”
“Oh that’s lookin good already”
“Oh perfect perfect yes”
He def loves painting
"I'm coming up behind you"
Dude recognized that tremendous booty.
there are some great pro tips here! Great info.
I'd ruff up the surfaces first with a quick sanding. Might have considered using a primer. Cutting horizontal is the tuffest cut to do.Good tips for beginners.
The liquid mask is awesome. Didn't know about that trick.
I do like the color selection. Nice work!
I really like it. Lo Mas Importante es que explicas cómo se debe de hacer y de la manera correcta.
Hi Mauro, you mentioned rolling the walls with a 9” sleeve but here’s the secret! 2 sizes of sleeves I use on all my paint projects. 13 mil for walls and a 19 mil for ceilings! 2 major reason they carry more paint and avoid lap marks especially on flat ceilings! Don the gooseneck guy professional painter Ottawa Canada! I do not recommend a 10 mil. Cheers!
Mario or Mauro & Rebecca or Rebekkah, great job!! LOVE the clear paint mask!
Came out nice!
Tip put some tape on the egde of the can than the paint doesn't stick to the can so you can still put the lid on
Where do you get the liquid mask? I've never seen it in Home depot or Lowes. I have a large paint project to do and I hate taping!
Great video! I’m glad he showed the masking paint.I can think of a lot of uses for it. These This Old House videos have the most trolls ever. All these “experts” in the comments need to make their own videos to show all these licensed contractors how to do it.
Tony Baggett I agree, and I’d love to hear what kind of training the so called experts have
Aly Nicoco , Many , many years of experience. There does seem to be a couple of real trolls here too leaving rude comments.
Tony Baggett my sentiments exactly. Great video
The arrogance is staggaring sometimes.
I didn't know that liquid mask existed. Brilliant.
Thank you!
4:11 “way dip” 😂😂😂
What nap of roller do you use. I saw 3 different nap sizes. For egg shell ,or semigloss
That was awesome.
Its nice to see a painting video where they actually remove the outlet covers. I’ve seen quite a few videos where they leave the covers on and paint around them
7:08
I dig that color
Didn't once see the sandpaper come out. Sanding promotes adhesion on that trim and knocks off all the little fuzzies on the walls that you know are there.
Yeah i agree need to give that wood work and walls a key before painting so it gives the paint something to bite to.
Correct, always lightly sand first to create a mechanical bond. Especially on areas like windows that take a lot of abuse
i have the yellow knife its a dewalt pretty sturdy knife even better when you pair it with a sharp blade
Juan Saravia they’re good for sure. Personally I like the Milwaukee fastback with the blade storage in the handle. It’s what I use daily.
useing tape makes job lot easier plus key is useing the right tape for the job 💯
the window protector , great idea
This is relaxing
Thanks for the tips.. it will surely help
Befor paint , first sanding , clear dust, isolate with tape every corner , primer and painting
I love painting but I have trouble with ceilings. I did two coats from ceiling white to SW alabaster and it still looks like crap.
Don't you need to remove the masking paint off the 'to be painted' area before painting over with the new paint (or just paint over the masking paint anyway)? Didn't see that mentioned in the video...
I mean the time it takes to apply a liquid mast, you could have put some masking tape down and painted the window
Exactly what paint additive did Mauro use and why? Also, what liquid mask did he use? Those Amazon links they included are outdated, sadly.
Is the liquid mask the same as the RC body liquid mask?
I don’t paint but when I do I spend half the time tapping ahahahah gotta get the perfect straight lines and if you put the tape around your wrist you still have both hands free and it’s easy to grab two foot section of the tape
6:35 why she pushing the brush and not pulling? Im certainly no pro, but whenever I paint, I found pulling easier, and had more control.
You are correct. Always pull the brush. Start and finish pulling slightly away from the edge
Good they changed that hideous window color. Looks a lot better.
I am going to be buying a old house, almost 160 years old. And it has some wood paneling. I am not looking to pull it down but I’d like to paint it, without the wood paneling grain showing. What would be the best method, I was thinking a wood putty.
How about using non voc paints like linseed oil?
Nice!
Where do you buy liquid masking? Big Box store? Paint supply store?
Nice v nice work
Wow its just like painting
I presume some of the masking liquid gets painted over on the window frame. Does that affect the paint bonding? And what about all the fine paint spatters that fly off the roller onto your freshly painted trim? It's happened to me!
Larry J the liquid masker can be painted over no problem.
He explained the process a little more in another episode. The masking liquid will stick to the trim.
I'm coming behind you
With a roller😎😎😎
liquid masking? is that the PVA glue?
Really sad that "wall to ceiling" cut had no explanation...
Where can i buy liquid mask?
Hello i have 3 questions
1. Semi glace white is colour only for wall or its semi glace primer?
2. The brush for windows how do u call it and how many inches
3. WHat kind of brush you use for room borders
Thank you
Karate kid for adults up down up down stroke left right left right stay focused very good now I go fishing, do whole room.
the cutting in along the top near the ceiling is miles out
Gray! How original!
Will it work in my home..
Good
Where are these vidz recorded.
There's painter's tape near the end!
I am having trouble with when I paint, after the paint has dried, it
looks rough in certain areas, almost like its been sanded. I've tried
changing the primer from oil based primer to water based and then when I
paint, it stills looks like it has been sanded. Do you have any
suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong?
Could be a number of things .
Are you keeping a wet edge when painting ?
If it's timber is it sanded properly ?
Is there gunk build up on your brush or in paint ?
they got the right amigo for that. i tell u what 😎
How long does it take for a beginner to paint a room compared to an expert?
Nice video
wow I really want to get a liquid mask..
Masking Liquid
Paint ! cant find it i saw Gardner Bender
White Liquid Electrical Tape 4 oz @ home depot
Liquid electric tape is definitely not what you want! Why did you even mention it?
It's time to remove and replace the thermostat.
Ancient
you'd be surprised how many households still have that, very reliable too
Don't need a $200+ talking Nest thermostat.
spikefivefivefive nah those are probably the simplest and best thermostats known to human kind.
They got Mercury in 'em.
Should you not sand the window frames first to provide a key?
I have so many questions... 0:55 But why? 3:37 Why is he pouring paint out of a different side of the can than it has already been poured out of? (3:39 Cut to him pouring out of a different can.) 3:51 What paint additive? 6:44 I agree pros don't need tape, but then why not also freehand the windows? The liquid mask might prevent paint from adhering to the edge of the glass (which seals the junction), and if you get it on the sash you'll have to touch up when it's removed.
Using liquid masking seems like A LOT more work than using painters tape and probably more expensive. The explanation isn’t really clear why we should go with liquid tape? I haven’t had any issues with painters tape so someone please explain
Liquid mask is cool but I’m guessing you can’t be sloppy with it and get it on the woodwork or you’re screwed, so you have to cut that in, So thinking tape is probably the way to go
He totally smashed!👍
So what happens when liquid masking goes over the wood area you are about to paint? I see few issue:
1. It adds extra thickness.
2. It's designed to peel easily.
Anyone know? Before even painting, can you score with a blade and peel off liquid masking from the frame?
Sergey Bebenin - Supposedly it acts as a thin primer on the prepped surfaces. Any decent paint would cover the edge of the masking fluid. The ultra smooth surface of the glass makes it possible to easily peel. It may be easier than taping edges, but nothing beats proper brush control. In a worst case scenario a damp rag, and a razor blade does wonders.
TOH had a video a few weeks ago where he demoed the masking in the studio. Totally fine to go under the paint on the wood.
It can also act as a spot primer, so it's not a huge deal if it hits the wood in a few places.
When he id the walls why didn't he do long strokes? That stop and start leaves marks you can see when the light hits it just right
Mike Builds i also didnt see him tape the chair rail. He definitely wouldve had splatter.
I always paint the walls first and get that outta the way ( well ceilings first ) then work on my trim and never have to worry about paint splatter. It’s so simple to add something like frog tape around your window trim and then cut in with your paint it comes out perfect I don’t know why so many people are taught to do it the reverse way??? 🤔🤔🤔to each his own I guess, it just seems more logical to do the trim last!
Rumour has it Becka is still painting those windows to this day
Is that the dog whisperer guy
This guy is the paint whisperer. Get your whisperers right, man!
Gray is popular for the same reason avocado green was in the seventies. There is nothing like fresh paint, and since everyone is using gray....
Finally she are getting those tai chi classes she was dreaming with
