  • Since after the establishment of spanish colonization, Peru as a nation was dominated by a horrid feudal system that dominated vast portions of its countryside, in that system the white and european landowners called "Gamonales" violently and brutaly exploited the indigenous peasants that worked their lands. It was somewhat said that " When you buy land in Peru the indegenous labourers that live in it come with the purchase". Even after independence in 1821 and the declaration of the Peruvian Republic, this system of exploitation remained, for Peru, even though now independent, was still ruled by a White Eurocentric Olygarchy, that could trace its roots back to the colonial days. This system persisted even for the frst half of the 20th century, causing many social conflicts and even the rise of socialists Guerrillas in the 1960s.
This however would change on the 3rd of October 1968, when the peruvian army, led by General Juan Velasco Alvarado overthrew the ineficient civilian and oligarchic government of the time, begining the Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces. Velasco, who was himself an ardent peruvian nationalist, felt that for the country to avoid the fate of Cuba, the main reason that caused the guerrillas in Peru should be eliminated, that being the Gamonal Feudal system, he also felt that for Peru to become truly sovereign it could no longer be rulled by and for the sole benefit of an out of touch racist oligarchy that identified itself more with its old colonizers than its actual country of birth. Thus Velasco's government enacted a large ammount of measures and reforms such as: the nationalization of Peru's natural reasources, an education and cultural program that sponsored and revitilized traditional and native peruvian culture, that for decades if not centuries had been shuned and discriminated against by the oligarchy, and finally most important of all, one of the biggest programs of land re-distribution ad reform in latin american history. Velasco's government revitilized peruvian national pride and confidence, finally most peruvians felt that they could feel true pride in who they were. Velasco also was known for his non-aligned foreign policy, wich would make Peru one if not the best armed country in South America.
Sadly velasco's project would come to an end, when his old ally now traitor, General Morales Bermudez would take advantage of Velasco's poor health to overthrow him. Under Bermudez most of the reforms of the Velasco government would either be revoked or reversed. However its effects would remain. Allthough controversial there is no denying the large impact Velasco had on his country, and how it in many ways was positive. After him the large masses of Peru achieved a sense of National Pride and Consciousness, alongside Basic Rights and Dignity. It can Be said many things about the man, but it cannot be denied, if there was a Peruvian president that trully and deeply loved his nation, that man was Juan Velasco Alvarado.
So today on the 200th aniverssary of peruvian independence, lest cellebrate the man who did the most out of many to make such thing an actual reality in the 20th century, lets cellebrate this the greatest of all peruvian patriots:
    ¡Kausachun Tayta Velazco! ¡Kausachun Perú!

He's by no means close to the level of quality of the Populists of the 1950s and he suffers from a massive dunning Krueger effect, but he's the best that we got.

That’s, theorically, a socialist song, not primarily populist.
